Ek Balam is an ancient archaeological Mayan ruin site located approximately 18mi from Valladolid, Mexico and 32 miles from Chichen Itza. These are some of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the area. Generally speaking, most tourists and travelers visit the ever popular ruins known as Chichen Itza.
If you're looking to avoid lines of tourists and capture photos of the ruins without people stepping in your way, a visit to Ek Balam is a must.
P.S. - Excuse some of the video quality. I've been having issues with my video editing program. Future videos will be much higher quality.

Ek Balam the black jaguar:
The beautiful acropolis of Ek Balam or Black Jaguar is located north of the Yucatan Peninsula en route to Rio Lagartos.
Inthe vicinity of Valladolid, Ek Balam or Jaguar Mexico Black (LuceroJaguar) is an archaeological complex of good size with beautiful buildings and detailed finished in stucco.
The entrance tothis site is protected by two walls (about 300 BC) begins with a magnificent Mayan arch, after the ceremonial center buildings, there is an oval palace and a Mayan ball game of good size.
All structures can be seen very well and surrounded by the jungle of the Yucatan.
Temple of Ek Balam:
In the background you can see the temple steps which reach the summit from which we see a panorama of the rchaeological site in general and the forest that surrounds it.
It reaches 29 meters high and 55 wide. Its base is stretched sideways with inner rooms.
Finishes of real beauty, the tomb of Ukit Lel Kan Tok:
The steps of the temple provides access to the tomb of the king of this ancient complex, which shows their belongings and tributes of necklaces and earrings.
Thin human figures:
Sites such as Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, and Kana are particularly rich in detail showing finishes with representations of humans, unlike the rest of the archeological sites in Mesoamerica, where such figures are rare or nonexistent.
Here at Ek Balam, fine finished in stucco, arethe jaws and monstrous fangs above the king and his throne and sideguards. And figures of warriors, they appear bearing wings.
Ek Balam Tour:
You can complete in about 4 hours knowing all the restored structures.
The sun can be very strong during the summer while the main templerises due to reflection of sunlight on its clear surface, especially at noon.
Directions to Ek Balam:
It reaches from the cities of Cancun and Merida via the toll road from which you will see the detour sign.
Ek Balam is located north of Valladolid en route to Rio Lagartos, north of Yucatan. Valladolid is reached without pay rates fortoll road passage.
Once you pass this intersection (from any access, either Valladolid or Toll Road) follow the north to passthrough the heart of the population Ek Balam.
Miles later you will find a junction on the right that leads directly to the archaeological site.

Ek Balam, de la Milpa al Turismo es un video documental que presenta la turistificación de una comunidad rural desde que 26 ejidatarios de Xcumil decidieron asentarse con sus familias en un terreno cercano a la zona arqueológica de Ek Balam. Posteriormente crearon la sociedad cooperativa turística U Najil Ek Balam operada hoy día por 13 ejidatarios asociados.
Mexico Road Trip - Mayan Ruins, Ek' Balam and Ziplining at X'canche cenote
When we visited Mexico, we went on a road trip to visit the Mayan ruins of Ek' Balam and the cenote X'canche.
We didn't mean to go for a road trip in Mexico... but we kinda got bored lying by the hotel pool, so we hired a car and set off into the jungle!
Ek' Balam is an awesome Mayan site- much less well known than Chichen Itza, it's quieter and you can CLIMB on the MAYAN RUINS! We climbed all the way to the top of the Great Pyramid/ Acropolis, which was an awesome experience.
We also visited the cenote next to Ek' Balam, called X'canche. This beautiful cenote is definitely worth a visit- we did ziplining, rappelling and more ziplining into the water! It was amazing!
Nothing to do with Motorhomes or Europe today, but I hope you enjoy a little glimpse of Mexico!

This was the first Maya site I visited during my trip to the Yucatán Peninsula. Having the option to climb and touch everything was great. The experience is hard to express with words. I hope you all enjoy the video and I plan to release another featuring Chichen Itza and the Tulum ruins.
