Raseborg, with love
In the coastal town of Raseborg in Southern Finland, you will find charm in the picturesque Old town in Ekenäs, in the old ironworks at Fiskars, Svartå and Billnäs, and in the vast archipelago region with its 1,300 islands. Here the rhythm of life is perhaps a little calmer, the pace slightly slower, but the joy of life has a stronger presence. Visit Raseborg, visitraseborg.com

Visit versatile Raseborg - just an hour from Helsinki and Turku
Visit Raseborg – versatile, beautiful and closer than you think
Only about an hour away from the Finnish cities, Helsinki and Turku, you'll find Raseborg. Close, but yet so different. A mixture of spectacular nature and archipelago, historical ironworks and castles, and last but not least, a tempting variety of culture, design and artesan food.
Raseborg is located on the main axis of Finland's history and culture. There are six stars in Raseborg:
the unique nature and the majestic archipelago with its National Park
Fiskars and Billnäs, the historical, but modern villages
Ekenäs, the picturesque town by the sea.
Raseborg Castle Ruins in Snappertuna village
Svartå Manor, the beautifully restored wooden mansion.

Welcome to our paradise!
Good to know: due to Finland’s history, Raseborg is a bilingual town where most places have two names: one in Finnish and another in Swedish. Therefore Raseborg is the Swedish name, Raasepori the Finnish one.

Bromarf Sunset - Finland
'Bromarf Sunset' - video and painting by Alan Hogan 2005.
A short video featuring some clips taken in Bromarf, southern Finland.
These clips were taken on the 30th of July 2005 while on holidays in Finland. The evening sunset inspired me to make a painting. The video footage is old by now and quality is poor by todays standards, but I hope it can illustrate just a few of the sights I used for my painting 'Bromarf Sunset'. I decided to move to Finland a couple years after taking this video clip. Now I can see it more often!
You can find this painting and many more on my Facebook page here

Jussarö Island Jussarön Saari
I used the old Gopro Hero with water case, so the sound is bad.
It has no image stabilizer as you can see... :)
Because of the powerful radar stations, you can't fly a drone, the risk is too high :)
Jussarö is an island in Ekenäs, Raseborg, Finland. Jussarö is known by the Jussarö lighthouse. There is also an old iron ore mine, but it was closed in 1967.
The iron ore occurrence is the biggest undersea level in Finland.
In Jussarö some abandoned buildings still remain; which were used by the military until 2005 for urban war simulations.
Jussarö is known as the only ghost town in Finland. Part of the island is open to visitors.
Prisoners worked in Jussarö mines in the 19th century. The island also had its own parish.
Kamerana oli vanhempi Gopro Hero vesikotelon kanssa, joten ääni on olematon.
Dronea ei uskaltanut edes kokeilla voimakkaiden tutka-asemien vuoksi.
Jussarö on ulkosaariryhmä Raaseporissa entisen Tammisaaren kaupungin alueella.
Saarella sijaitsi aikaisemmin Jussarön kaivos, josta louhittiin rautamalmia.
Toiminta lopetettiin kuitenkin kannattamattomana vuonna 1967.

Raaseporin linna Raseborg Castle - Saverio Pepe
The Raseborg castle ruins, situated on a rock by Raseborg stream, are the remainders of a castle that was probably built in the 14th century, when the rock was still surrounded by water. Raseborg is officially mentioned for the first time in a letter dated 1378. It is a typical medieval castle of a simpler kind that has been constructed during a long time period. There is no other similar castle in Finland. Raseborg’s greatest importance was probably in the area of trade. It was constructed on a sheltered location on the south coast, presumably to defend Swedish interests against the successful Hanseatic town Reval (Tallinn). Both Danish and Swedish troops, as well as more undefinable pirate fleets, fought over the command of the castle, which shows that the castle was regarded as an important base. On the so called Galgbacken (Gallows Hill) north of the castle ruins, bishop Hemming Gadh was executed in December 1520. That was the Danish king Christian II getting even with his political opponents. When Gustavus Vasa seized power in Sweden and made the nearby town of Ekenäs the centre of administration in the province in 1528, Raseborg lost its strategic importance. It was abandoned in the 1550’s and laid deserted for more than 300 years. Raseborg experienced its heyday in the middle of the 15th century when (the expelled) king Karl Knutsson Bonde (Charles VIII of Sweden) kept court in the castle on repeated occasions.

R.I.P. Commuter train Y: Sm2 Inkoo (Ingå)-Siuntio (Sjundeå), FI. 23.3.16 16:32-16:45 (aband. 27.3)
This is a video of me riding the train Y commuter train service from Helsinki-Karis, which will be abandoned between Siuntio and Karis on 27.3, and this is riding an old Sm2 (manufactured in April 1978) on the Inkoo-Siuntio service (12 minutes, 18,8 km) which will be abandoned. The old Tähtelä (Täkter) railway station building between Siuntio and Inkoo still exists, abandoned since 1.1.1993.
MORE INFORMATION:
The train Y is a commuter train service running 6 times a day between Helsinki and Karis (85,7 km) on a part of the Coastal Line from Helsinki-Turku, taking 1h09min - 1h13min and stopping at: Helsinki central railway station, Pasila (Böle) 3,2km, Leppävaara (Alberga) 11,0km, Masala (Masaby) in Kirkkonummi 29km, Kirkkonummi (Kyrkslätt) 36,9km, Siuntio (Sjundeå) 50,7km, Inkoo (Ingå) 69,5km and Karis (Karjaa) 85,7km.
Unfortunately, since the government in Finland can't subsidize non-profitable traffic on rail anymore, the service in the current form will be discontinued on 27.3, and the Inkoo (Ingå) station will be abandoned, because very few people have been using it, since it is 5km from Inkoo village, in the wrong direction. At Inkoo commuter train station, there will be 3 bus services to Karjaa and Kirkkonummi a day, for the commuter and long-distance trains. The new commuter train Y service will be limited to the 50,7km Siuntio-Helsinki line (which takes 41-46 minutes), operated by HSL (ordered from VR until 31.12.2017, after which Siuntio might also join HSL like Kirkkonummi), and from 27.3 will have 4 departures from Siuntio a day: at 6 and 7 in the Morning and 16 and 18 in the evening. From Helsinki, it will have 4 departures a day, at 5 and 6 in the Morning and
at 15 and 17 in the evening. In the weekends, there will be no service. The new commuter train Y will serve the same stations as before, but it will also include Espoo (Esbo)20,2km and Huopalahti (Hoplax) 6,4km commuter train stations, train stations, not served by the old train Y. This will provide a faster link for the commuter train P to Myyrmäki, Vantaa and to the Airport).
New Stadler Flirt trains will replace the old Sm1 and Sm2 trains previously used on the train Y, since they accelerate and decelerate faster and are more comfortable. Also, from August, 2 more commuter train services a day for the train Y on Helsinki-Siuntio are to be taken into use, bringing it back to 6 services a day.
At the Karis (Karjaa) railway station, 12 of the InterCity and Pendolino trains between Helsinki-Turku stop so the services are frequent and it takes only 49-55min on any of the long-distance trains to Helsinki or Pasila, or 50-56min to Kupittaa or Turku. The prices have also been significantly lowered, which is good for commuters. Regional trains or buses to Tammisaari(Ekenäs)&Hanko (Hangö) (taking about 40min-1h between Karis and Hanko) leave from Karis railway station.
There will also be many other changes: The Mankki (Mankby) 24,6km stop in Espoo and Luoma (Bobäck)27,2km stop in Kirkkonummi, on the commuter train lines S and U will be abandoned (services to Kauklahti 23,8km and other stations will be provided by buses from the stations) because not many people have been using them and a new commuter train U will be used because of VR:s mission to operate the new fast 1h38min service between Turku and Helsinki with the Pendolino trains (1h26min from Kupittaa to Pasila, not stopping on any stations in between, providing a better service for commuters two times a day - at 7:08-8:46 and 16:10-17:48). And all the other slow Intercity train services from Helsinki-Turku will be shortened by 5 minutes (from 1:58 to 1:53) and Helsinki-Kupittaa will be shortened to 1h47min. This is because all but two Intercity and Pendolino trains will stop at Kirkkonummi from 27.3, and most passengers going from Kirkkonummi to Turku will have to take a bus to Karis first.
Also, a new faster commuter train X service between Helsinki and Kirkkonummi will be added 2 times a day, stopping on the same stations as the new commuter train Y. And between Helsinki and Riihimäki, a new faster commuter train D service will be added 2 times a day, skipping Kerava, for instance. And the stops at Purola and Nuppulinna will be abandoned due to low passenger numbers. Of course, the ongoing worsening train services in Finland have been widely met with criticism, as commuters, students and elderly need them, and the original plan to completely abandon the commuter train Y services were met with a lot of criticism, as more than 3000 inhabitants out of 6000 of the Siuntio village commute to the Helsinki region every day (because the station is located conveniently in the very center of Siuntio near the supermarket, the most important buildings and many residential buildings), and 11 000 names for saving the commuter train Y were collected, but unfortunately, Inkoo and Karis (Raasepori/Raseborg) didn't do enough to save the commuter train services.
