Eketorp borg Öland Sweden
Eketorp is an Iron Age fort in southeastern Öland, Sweden, which was extensively reconstructed and enlarged in the Middle Ages. Throughout the ages the fortification has served a variety of somewhat differing uses: from defensive ringfort, to medieval safe haven and thence a cavalry garrison.[1] In the 20th century it was further reconstructed to become a heavily visited tourist site and a location for re-enactment of medieval battles. Eketorp is the only one of the 19 known prehistoric fortifications on Öland that has been completely excavated, yielding a total of over 24,000 individual artifacts. The entirety of southern Öland has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Eketorp fortification is often referred to as Eketorp Castle.

The fort has 3 building phases: 300-400AD and 400-650AD and 1170-1240AD. Throughout the ages the fortification has served a variety of somewhat differing uses: from defensive ringfort, to medieval safe haven and thence a cavalry garrison. In the 20th century it was further reconstructed to become a heavily visited tourist site and a location for re-enactment of medieval battles. The indigenous peoples of the Iron Age constructed the original fortification about 300 AD, a period known to have engendered contact between Öland natives with Romans and other Europeans. The ringfort in that era is thought to have been a gathering place for religious ceremonies and also a place of refuge for the local agricultural community when an outside enemy appeared. The circular design was believed to be chosen because the terrain is so
level that attack from any side was equally likely. The original diameter of this circular stone fortification was about 57 metres (187 ft). In the next century the stone was moved outward to construct a new circular structure of about 80 metres (260 ft) in diameter. At this juncture there were known to be about fifty individual cells or small structures within the fort as a whole. Some of these cells were in the center of the fortified ring, and some were actually built into the wall itself. In the late 600s AD the ringfort was mysteriously abandoned, and it remained unused until the early 11th century. This 11th century work generally built upon the earlier fort, except that stone interior cells were replaced with timber structures, and a second outer defensive wall was erected.

Sandby borg is an Iron Age ringfort, one of at least 15 on the island of Öland, Sweden.
It sits about 2 kilometers southeast of Södra Sandby village in Sandby parish in southeastern Öland.
It is also close to the village of Gårdby.
From 2011 the fort has been subject of excavation, the results of which show that it was the scene of a massacre in the late 5th century AD.
The victims of the massacre were never buried but are found lying as they fell, inside the houses and scattered on the streets of the fort. This has resulted in a unique snapshot character of the archaeology at Sandby borg, providing new insights both to violence and conflict in the Iron Age but also concerning everyday life in the ringfort.
The ringfort of Sandby borg is located adjacent to the shoreline on south-east Öland. Today, the structure consists of an eroded oval stone wall of 2-3 m height enclosing an area of approximately 5000 m2. The walls are made from local limestone with a fill of erratic boulders and pebbles.
Three gates are visible as shallow depressions in the wall; crop marks visible in aerial shots of the site suggest the presence of a possible fourth gate. The original ringfort wall was 4 m wide and would have been approximately 4–5 m high.
Aerial photographs and geophysical surveys of the ringfort interior revealed buried stone structures, interpreted as stone house walls of 53 houses. The layout is similar to that of several other Öland ringforts, e.g. Eketorp, with houses radially placed inside the ring wall and a central block surrounded by a street.
To the west of the ringfort there is a structure consisting of numerous regularly placed rows of large erratic boulders, probably part of the defensive structure of the fort.

A visit to the Swedish island of Öland | DW English
Öland is popular with Swedes, because it gets more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the country. But the island has much more to offer, including palaces, windmills and regional specialties.

Project Postcard: Bean crisps in Oland, Sweden
Brown beans are traditionally grown on the Swedish island Öland and are also common in the culinary heritage. The brown bean of Öland has a Protected Geographical Indication and is recognized by 'Slow Food' as a Presicia Product. Recipe experimentation started in 2002, the result was a totally new product - bean crisps, rich in fiber and nutritious as well as environmentally friendly. The realization of this project showed that the time needed to develop new products and processes is often underestimated as are the financial resources required, especially in a new field.

Sorry for being absent for a while. Have been busy working and not filming/editing. But, now I'm back. I have in the meantime switched away from Magix Vegas NLE video editing and just started using DaVinci Resolve Pro, due to performance and stability issues. Its quite a learning curve and this video is the first.
The castle in the video is from a trip to Sweden, Öland, where several castles are located, but this one is the best preserved. Enjoy!

Agricultural Landscape of Southern Oland - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Agricultural Landscape of Southern Oland is on the island of Oland, just off the coast of southern Sweden, where the southern half of the island is home to quite an interesting World Heritage site. Traditionally, Swedish farm houses were packed together in line villages, where the houses were together and the farmers would work distant fields. In the 19th century, this was changed as the King redistributed lands and the farm houses moved out on to the fields. But in Southern Oland, a large part of the island is unfarmable limestone, so the redistribution was never carried out, making it a small piece of living history. Enjoy!
