Cajas National Park - Cuenca, Ecuador
David's Been Here is outside of Cuenca, Ecuador, touring the Cajas National Park. What David describes as one of the most beautiful national parks he has ever seen, this sprawling highland is home to hundreds of lagoons, beautiful rivers and cascades, and lush, green forests. Also the location where the Virgin Mary was spotted over 20 years ago, you can come and visit the shrine/garden that is dedicated to the apparition. Take your time to visit this breathtaking national park, and find all the information you need to know about it in the David's Been Here Guide to Cuenca, now available for your Kindle as well.

Upper Cajas National Park Hike near Cuenca Ecuador (2019)
Amelia and JP VLOG 79: On this excursion outside Cuenca, Ecuador, we went to Upper Cajas in the Cajas National Park. Edwin picked us up about 9:30AM and the drive took us about 45 minutes to reach the check in station.
Entry into the park is free, but we did have to sign in at the building by the parking lot before venturing down the trail toward the lake...

Lower Cajas National Park Hike near Cuenca Ecuador (2019)
Amelia and JP VLOG 72: We went on another hiking adventure just 40 minutes west of Cuenca to Lower Cajas National Park.
It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to drive from highway 582 to the trailhead parking lot. It was free to enter, but we had to show our cedulas (or passports would work). There are no food services so bring your own snacks....

Hiking in Cajas National Park (Parque Nacional el Cajas) Cuenca, Ecuador
Join the adventure! ????
We went with Club de Andinismo Sangay (Sangay Mountaineering Club) on an excursion into Parque Nacional el Cajas (Cajas National Park) called “Ruta de las Lagunas”. Parque Nacional el Cajas is just outside of Cuenca and the hike was 10.5 km (6.5 miles) with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (650 feet) and was graded skill level 2/5. Club de Andinismo Sangay does mountaineering excursions all over Ecuador, including the famous summits of Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua etc. The guides are super friendly and they know what they are doing. What a great time!
The club is based in Cuenca, here’s their website if you want to learn more:
The drone footage is from an Autel X-Star Premium, taken on a different date. It did very well and I did not notice any performance impairment due to the altitude of around 15,000 feet.
Want to learn more about it?
Here’s my review of the Autel X-Star Premium drone on my RC Hobby channel:

Cajas National Park - Day Trip from Cuenca, Ecuador | Ep. 10
INFORMATION FOR GETTING TO CAJAS NATIONAL PARK BY BUS:
Take the Occidental bus from Terminal Terrestre to Cajas National Park. The ticket costs two dollars and you have to buy it at the Occidental booth which is in section 4 of Terminal Terrestre right by where the buses leave from. You will need an additional 10 cents per person to get through the turnstile to the buses - we aren't sure why (it was strange).
Once you're on the bus, it will take you straight to the visitors center where you have to register - remember to bring identification! We didn't have to show it but I think we were the rare case. You tell them how long you want to hike for and they will suggest a hike for you.
Our hike, route 1, ended at the highway where we had to wait for around 20 minutes for a bus back to Cuenca. You sit down on the bus first, then an attendant comes to you to take your money. The cost is the same - 2 dollars per person for the ride back.

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia.
Traveling Atlas was created to capture our moments of taking risk, building connections, and seeing the world. We will be staying in each country we visit for about a month in order to experience cultures to our maximum capacity and to inspire others that they can do the same. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.
Cajas National Park, Cuenca, Ecuador
El Cajas National Park in Cuenca, Ecuador
El Cajas National Park or Cajas National Park is a national park in the highlands of Ecuador. It is located about 30 km west from Cuenca, the capital of the province of Azuay. The area of 285.44 km2 between 3100m and 4450m above sea level offers a tundra vegetation on a jagged landscape of hills and valleys.
The name Cajas is derived from the Quichua word cassa meaning gateway to the snowy mountains or caxa. It has also been linked to the Spanish word cajas (boxes).
About 270 lakes and lagoons can be found in the páramo of Cajas. Luspa is the largest of these lake and extends over 78 hectares with a maximum depth of 68 m at a perimeter of 5,161 m. Like the other lakes it is of glacial origin, and glaciation shaped the landscape of Cajas leaving U-shaped valleys and ravines. Cajas provides about 60% of the drinking water for the Cuenca area. Two of the four rivers of Cuenca originate from Cajas, the Tomebamba and Yanuncay rivers which eventually drain into the Amazon river. The Paute river also links to the Amazon. As the park straddles the continental divide, its western drainage, the Balao and Cañar link to the Pacific ocean. The modern road crosses the continental divide at the pass Tres Cruces. This section is the most western part of the continental divide of South Americas.
Flora
Humidity and high altitude with low atmospheric pressure create an ecosystem that accumulates organic material in the soil that is able to retain water. The high grassland ecosystem contains plants suitably adapted to it, 19 of them endemic to Cajas. The dominant plant is straw grass.
Above 3,300 meters the quinua (Polylepis) or paper tree forest can be found. It is in forests such as these that a second protected population of the rare Fuchsia campii, in the Onagraceae family, is predicted to live, as it has also been found in another nearby national park of similar ecological characteristics.
In the lower parts of the park, the cloud forest and perennial high mountain forest are present, primarily in the ravines near the brooks and rivers.
Animals
The Cajas National Park is home to a large variety of animals, some of which are endemic or highly endangered. Among the most prominent are the South American condor, of which only 80 remain throughout all Ecuador; the curiquinga, a large black and white raptor, and the largest hummingbird of the world, the giant hummingbird, which lives only on agave flowers. The violet-throated metaltail is endemic to Cajas and surrounding valleys. The avifauna consists of 157 bird species, making birdwatching an alluring activity for visitors.
Overall, forty-four mammalian species have been identified in the park. Species include types of opossums, cats, and bats. Also there are pumas, coatis, weasels, skunks, foxes, porcupines, pacas, shrews, rabbits and other rodents. Endemic are the Cajas water mouse that belongs to the group Ichthyomyini and Tate's shrew opossum.
At least seventeen species of amphibians live around the lagoons of Cajas. This includes those of the genera Atelopus, Telmatobius, Gastrotheca, Eleutherodactylus, and Colostethus. The high variety of amphibians suggests the presence of a diversity of insects, as they are a chief amphibian food source.
The area shows evidence of human activities already from the Cañari period. This includes three interregional roads connecting Guapondelig with the lowlands including Paredones, a control point for the trade between the highlands and the coastal areas. After the Incan invasion Inca roads were constructed, incorporating preexisting roads. Twenty-eight archeological sites have been identified in the park and its vicinity that indicate inhabitation during the pre-Incan and Incan periods. During the Colonial time the vicinity of the area was used for livestock. With the creation of the park the area has become popular for hiking, climbing, camping, fishing, and birdwatching. Control points are located at the road entries to the park. The park has a refuge hut and can be reached from Cuenca and Guayaquil. A road from Chaucha to San Joaquin touches on the southern border of the park providing access.
