Chichen Itza's Famous Pyramid is Actually Two Pyramids
El Castillo, or the Temple of Kukulcan, is 98 feet tall and has 365 steps. What you can't see from the outside is the original, much smaller pyramid that acted as a foundation.

Chichén Itzá Pyramids ???????? México Travel Guide - Travel & Discover
Chichen Itza was one of the largest Maya cities and it was likely to have been one of the mythical great cities, or Tollans, referred to in later Mesoamerican literature. The city may have had the most diverse population in the Maya world, a factor that could have contributed to the variety of architectural styles at the site.

Hidden third temple found inside Mexico’s Kukulkan pyramid at Chichen Itza ruins - TomoNews
CHICHEN ITZA, MEXICO — A hidden third temple was discovered this month inside the Kukulkan Pyramid, one of the world’s most famous ancient structures.
Researchers used a 3D scanning technique called electrical resistivity tomography to find the 10-meter-tall structure inside the Temple of Kukulkan at Chichen Itza in the Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Experts believe this third structure was constructed between the years 550 and 800, reported the BBC, citing researchers.
Also known as El Castillo, the Kukulkan was already known to have been made of up other two temples. According to an AFP report, these consist of a 30-meter-tall external structure with another 20-meter-tall pyramid inside of it. It is thought that the new structures were added to cover decaying ones or to welcome new leaders.

Mexico: See Kukulkan the 'Feathered Serpent' descend from El Castillo temple
Thousands gathered at the El Castillo temple in Chichen Itza archaeological site in Tinum, Friday, to witness the appearance of Kukulkan (which means 'Feathered Serpent' in English), an ancient Mayan snake deity, descending from the stairs of the pyramid - an illusion appearing only twice a year during the spring and fall time equinoxes due to the specific angle of the sun and the shadows cast by the first nine steps of the temple.
