Very excited to bring you along on me trip to El Djem in Tunisia!
That means of course touring the Amphitheatre of Thysdus of the Amphitheatre of El Jem.
Join me as we step back in to history and roam in the footsteps of Gladiators.
El Djem is far from Tunis, so we started the day early. We drove for over 3 hours on the highway through thick fog till we got there.
Seeing the Amphitheatre for the first time was amazing, it is bigger than it seems in pictures and I could not wait to get in. We then got a short but informative guided tour and then we had a few hours to roam about by ourselves.
We walked on the open field where the gladiators would have fought, saw the openings where they would bring up exotic animals to fight the gladiators and walked in the underground structures that supported the games.
We then walked up a lot of steps as we through pathway after pathway roaming the halls all the way to the top. From there we got a great view of the elliptical space of the Amphitheatre and the steps where the spectators sat.
We then left El Djem to visit the village of Takrouna, and old Berder settlement located on a hill.

Tunisia El Jem
The city was built, like almost all Roman settlements in Tunisia, on former Punic settlements. In a less arid climate than today's, Roman Thysdrus prospered especially in the 2nd century, when it became an important center of olive oil manufacturing for export. It was the seat of a Christian bishop - which is still occupied by a titular Roman Catholic bishop today.
By the early 3rd century AD, when the amphitheater was built, Thysdrus rivaled Hadrumetum (modern Sousse) as the second city of Roman North Africa, after Carthage. However, following the abortive revolt that began there in 238 AD, and Gordian I's suicide in his villa near Carthage, Roman troops loyal to the Emperor Maximinus Thrax destroyed the city. It never really recovered.
The amphitheater was used for filming some of the scenes from the 1979 Monty Python film The Life of Brian and was also used for filming some of the scenes from the Academy Award (Oscar) winning film Gladiator.
El Djem is famous for its amphitheater, often incorrectly called a Colosseum (roughly translated from Latin as 'that thing by the Colossus'), which is capable of seating 35,000 spectators. Only the Flavian Amphitheater in Rome (about 50,000 spectators) and the ruined theatre of Capua are larger. The amphitheatre at El Djem was built by the Romans under proconsul Gordian, who was acclaimed Emperor at Thysdrus, around 238 and was probably[citation needed] mainly used for gladiator shows and chariot races (like in Ben-Hur). Many tourists come here to see what it was like to be inside what was once a place where lions and people met their fate. Much of it is crumbled but the essence of it still remains. It is also possible that construction of the amphitheatre was never finished.
Until the 17th century it remained more or less whole. From then on its stones were used for building the nearby village of El Djem and transported to the Great Mosque in Kairouan, and at a tense moment during struggles with the Ottomans, the Turks used cannons to flush rebels out of the amphitheatre.
The ruins of the amphitheatre were declared a World Heritage Site in 1979.
Drifting sand is preserving the market city of Thysdrus and the refined suburban villas that once surrounded it. The amphiteatre occupies archaeologists' attention: no digging required. Some floor mosaics have been found and published, but field archaeology has scarcely been attempted.
In the world of writing materials, Thysdrus lay in the Empire of Papyrus, which preserves remarkably well if kept as dry as at El Djem..
During World War II a major military airfield was located near El Djem, used first by the German Luftwaffe. It was attacked on numerous occasions and later used by the United States Army Air Forces Twelfth Air Force as a transport field. There are few, if any, remains of the airfield today with the land being returned to agricultural uses outside of the city.

엘 젬(El Jem)이라는 작은 도시에 도착해서, 호텔 하나 잡았습니다. 잘은 모르겠지만 엘 젬에는 숙박 시설이 거의 없는 거 같습니다. 몇 명에게 물어봤지만 모두 동일한 호텔을 알려주더군요. 물어물어 간 ‘호텔 클럽 크사르 엘 젬(Hotel Club Ksar El Jem)’의 가격은 1박에 40TND(약 2만 4,000원)이었고, 시설도 나름 괜찮았습니다. 나중에 생각해 보니 더 깍을 수 있었는데 말이죠. 참고로 엘 젬은 콜로세움(Amphitheatre of El Jem)이 유명합니다. 엘 젬은 딱 콜로세움 하나만 보기 위해 간다고 해도 될 거 같습니다. 참고로 엘 젬의 콜로세움은 볼 만합니다.

Roman Gladiator arena in El Jem Tunisia
El Djem or El Jem, now in Tunisia, is famous for its amphitheatre. It once coud seat around 35,000, smaller than the Colosseum in Rome which could hold 45,000. It was built by the Romans by Gordian, who was acclaimed Emperor around 238AD.
Until the 17th century it remained in good condition but from then on many of its stones were used to build the village of El Djem. Further damage was inflicted during the Ottomans and Turks conflict when the Turk used canons to bring out the rebels from within. It was declared a world Heritage Site in 1979.
