4 day Expedition to El Mirador, Peten
This tour will take you to Petén rainforest's Mirador Basin, which is the last tract of virgin rainforest remaining in Central America. It is home to the largest and earliest cities in the Maya world and is the area of many recent and important archaeological investigations. This trail is operated by the people of Carmelita, the northernmost village of Petén located close to the Mexican border. This community was founded 60 years ago as an important base for chicle collection and processing. Chicle is the resin of the Chico Zapote tree, which forms the natural base of chewing gum.
Another rainforest product is the xate palm frond which is used in floral arrangements. The villagers of Carmelita have always depended on the surrounding forest for their livelihood and have extracted these non-timber forest products in a sustainable manner.
This trail explores the Lost Maya Empire of El Mirador. Legend has it that at its height, El Mirador was four times as grandiose as Tikal. This impressive site remains one of the most isolated and understudied of the great Mayan ruins. Although largely unexcavated, these ruins are still predominantly intact, protected by the dense jungle canopy which covers and protects them from erosion The most impressive structure in the complex is the Tigre Pyramid, which stands at an unprecedented height of 18 stories, the tallest pyramid yet discovered in the Maya world, with a base the size of three football fields. Over 200 other buildings in this gigantic complex still remain undiscovered. Come and explore El Mirador, one of the greatest legacies left by the Maya Civilization!

MIRADOR ADVENTURES: Yaxha & Topoxte (Guatemala)
Yaxha and Topoxte are rarely visited ruins 20 kms from the Belizian border. 90% of the tourists go only to Tikal and don't visit this miracle. We don't know a lot about these ruins but Yaxha is the 2nd biggest excaveted ruin in Guatemala. You have a great chance to see a lot of animals, not only birds but crocodiles, big cats and other type of mammals too. Topoxte is a pearl on the other side of the lake, worth to see.
If you want to visit the ruins or you would join other jungle tours, treks and expeditions, check our website first:

A Day in El Mirador Mayan Ruins Guatemala
El Mirador Mayan ruins in Guatemala is considered to be the birthplace of the Mayan world. Dating from the pre-classic era, this site is home to La Danta pyramid, the tallest in the Mayan world and the largest in the world by volume. We had the pleasure of exploring the site for a day, here are a few photos.
Petencito Zoo, Flores, Lago Peten Itza, Guatemala, Central America, North America
Stay on the path while in the jungle or a jaguar may eat you. Don't swim in the lagoon or you might make the crocodiles mad. Have a good time, and I will see you in a few hours, said the boatman as he left us on our own. Arriving by boat to a tiny island in the middle of Lake Peten we knew that this was going to be a much different zoo experience than we were used to. Passing the ticket counter to the zoo we were immediately greeted by some free roaming boars. They seemed pretty friendly. I am sure if I wanted to they would have let me touch them. However after watching them roll in the mud I decided to let them be. Walking through the zoo, some of the animals were caged and others were not. Some of the more dangerous animals such as the jaguar and the puma were separated by big pits. Going to the zoo, one needs to be prepared for a lot of walking. Terrain wise I'd say it is comparable to the San Diego Zoo (a lot of going up and down hills) in California. The main difference is there are no shuttles within the zoo and you are walking through a very hot jungle (should of brought sun screen). After about 2 miles worth of walking we were done, but there are trails that go out to about 4 miles. The Petencito Zoo in Flores, Guatemala is a nice little diversion to those staying in the Flores / Santa Elena area. For 130 quetzales ($19 usd) you can hire a boat to the zoo. (That's per boat, not per person.) The boat fee also includes a scenic tour around Flores Island. From the boat we had great views of Flores, Santa Elena, and San Miguel. The zoo tickets cost us 40 quetzales ($7.25 usd). Being under 6 AJ wasn't required to pay. The zoo operates from 7 AM-5PM.
