CUBA: EXPLORING historic SPANISH FORT (DEL MORRO) in HAVANA'S HARBOR (built 1590s) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit this wave-lashed fort with its emblematic lighthouse was erected between 1589 and 1630 to protect the entrance to Havana harbor from pirates and foreign invaders (French corsair Jacques de Sores had sacked the city in 1555). Perched high on a rocky bluff above the Atlantic, the fort has an irregular polygonal shape, 3m-thick walls and a deep protective moat, and is a classic example of Renaissance military architecture.
For more than a century the fort withstood numerous attacks by French, Dutch and English privateers, but in 1762 after a 44-day siege a 14,000-strong British force captured El Morro by attacking from the landward side. The Castillo's famous lighthouse was added in 1844.
Cuba is a Caribbean island nation under communist rule. It has sugar-white beaches and is dotted with tobacco fields, which play a part in the production of the country's legendary cigars. The capital, Havana, is lined with pastel houses, 1950s-era cars and Spanish-colonial architecture in the 16th-century core, Old Havana. Salsa music plays in the dance clubs and cabaret shows are performed at the famed Tropicana.

Description
El Morro Canon Firing Ceremony, Havana, Cuba
Every night at 9PM, rain or shine, there is a canon firing ceremony on the fortress walls of El Morro in Havana, Cuba.
I took this on a recent bus tour of the city. It is a popular destination and there is always a crowd. One needs to arrive early to a get a choice spot to witness the ceremony. Unfortunately, our tour arrived a bit too late to assure a good spot. On the plus side, it was a very loud kaboom!
Castillo de Los Tres Reyes Del Morro in Havana, Cuba
The Morro Castle, or in Spanish Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro, is a picturesque fortress guarding the entrance to the bay in Havana. Juan Bautista Antonelli, an Italian engineer, designed it. When it was built in 1589 Cuba was occupied by the Spaniards. The fort protected the mouth of the harbor with a chain that was stretched across the water to the fortress of La Punta across. On the headland on the other side of the harbor you see Old Havana or 'Habana Vieja and the Malecon. Signs indicates what you can see in Habana Vieja, just across the street from the fort. Inside the fort is an exhibition on the lighthouses of Cuba. The cannons around the fort aren`t all as nice as this one ...
most were in poor condition and rusty. The office of the current harbor master is still housed in the fortress.

Cannon Ceremony at Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro, Havana, Cuba
Our tour guide Mario made this happen and I'm so happy we made it in time.
This video starts with the beginning of the ceremony and ends with the cannon going off.
The 9 o’clock cannon signaling when the city gates would again be closed back when pirates roamed the sea. If you missed the cannon blast you were stuck outside for the night. Today, the cannon serves as a reminder of these old authentic Cuban traditions. It also signaled the end of a fun day in Havana for us!

Havana castles and fortresses (Cuba, Castillo del Morro)
The Castle of the Three Magic Kings of el Morro was designed in the last decades of the XVI century by the engineer Bautista Antonelli, with views to the protection of the Villa of San Cristóbal Of Havana. Together with the lighthouse that accompanies it, it is a symbol of that city and of Cuba.

The Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca (also known by the less formal title of Castillo del Morro or as San Pedro de la Roca Castle) is a fortress on the coast of the Cuban city of Santiago de Cuba. About 6 miles (10 km) southwest of the city centre, it overlooks the bay.It was designed in 1637 by Giovanni Battista Antonelli (also known as Juan Battista Antonelli), a member of a Milanese family of military engineers, on behalf of the governor of the city, Pedro de la Roca de Borja, as a defense against raiding pirates, although an earlier, smaller, fortification had been built between 1590 and 1610. Antonelli design was adapted to the situation of the fortress on the steep sides of the promontory (the morro from which the fortress gets its name) reaching into the bay. It was constructed on a series of terraces; there were four main levels and three large bulwarks to house the artillery. Supplies would be delivered by sea and then stored in the large warehouse, which was cut directly into the rock, or transported up to the top level which housed the citadel. Construction of the citadel took 62 years, starting in 1638 and finally being completed in 1700, though work on the fortification was spasmodic. Antonelli was recalled to Cuba in 1645, shortly after the massive project was started, and other examples of his work can be seen there in the twin forts of Fuerte del Cojimar and Torreón de la Chorrera (Fuerte de Santa Doratea de Luna de Chorrera). Some of the structures from the earlier fortification were later incorporated into the main structure.
