El Torcal park and the protected EL Torcal Natural Area is known for it's unusual limestone rock formations. Located about 30 km north of Málaga city in the direction of Antequera near the village of Villanueva de la Concepción, within El Torcal Park's 17 square km are some of the most beautiful and impressive limestone landscapes in Europe. The whole area was under sea until one hundred million years ago.

El Torcal de Antequera is a nature reserve in the Sierra del Torcal mountain range located south of the city of Antequera, in the province of Málaga off the A45 road in Andalusia, Spain.
It is known for its unusual landforms, and is one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Europe. The area was designated a Natural Site of National Interest in July 1929, and a Natural Park Reserve of about 17 square kilometres was created in October 1978.
The Sierra del Torcal (or El Torcal) is a small mountain range separating the cities of Antequera and Málaga. It has four geological sections: Sierra Pelada, Torcal Alto, Torcal Bajo and Tajos and Laderas. The highest point in El Torcal is Camorro de las Siete Mesas (1336 m) in the Torcal Alto.
The Jurassic age limestone is about 150 million years old and was laid down in a marine corridor that extended from the Gulf of Cádiz to Alicante between the present Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. These seabeds were uplifted to an elevation of over 1300 meters during the Tertiary era, resulting in a modest mountain range of flat-lying limestone, which is rare in Andalucia. Later, a series of fractures, cracks and faults at right-angles (generally NW-SE and NE-SW) were exploited by erosion and produced the alleys between large blocks of limestone visible today. The blocks themselves have been subjected to both dissolution by water (karstification) and freeze-thaw splitting action which, working on the limestone’s horizontal beds, resulted in the various shapes visible today, many of which resemble, and have been named after, everyday objects such as the Sphinx, the Jug, the Camel, the Screw, etc. Other flat surfaces have been karstified into rugged, rocky lands where travel on foot is difficult.
Like many massive limestones, the Torcal includes caves and other underground forms, some of them of historical importance like the Cueva del Toro (Cave of the Bull) with its Neolithic artifacts. Their origins are also related to the dissolution of underground limestone by rainwater.

Antequera is hugely rich in history, culture and heritage, and inhabited since the Bronze Age, there are some amazing monuments to be found everywhere: tombs which date back to 2,500 BC, the national park of El Torcal with its unique limestone formations, Roman baths, Baroque churches and Renaissance palaces and a 13th Century Moorish castle, remain to pay tribute to the strategic importance of Antequera in days gone by.
The town, and to the north the fertile plains of the valley, are overlooked by an almost vertical, 800 metre high, limestone rock, La Peña de los Enamorados, The Lovers' Rock, where local legend has it that two young lovers, a Christian man and a Moorish woman, jumped to their death rather than deny their forbidden love
Antequera is commonly known as the 'crossroads of Andalucia' because of it's excellent location in the heart of the region. With excellent forms of communication by road, air and most recently high speed train it allows fast and easy connections locally, nationally and internationally. Located in the province of Malaga and on the motorway junction of the A92 and A45 the main cities of Andalucia, Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba and Malaga are not far away. The airports of Malaga and Granada are within 50 minutes of the town and with the addition of a new high speed train link in Santa Ana the capital of Madrid is now within easy reach.

Antequera is a city and municipality in the Comarca de Antequera, province of Málaga, part of the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia. Antequera is known as the heart of Andalusia (el corazón de Andalucía) because of its central location among Málaga, Granada, Córdoba, and Seville. The Antequera Dolmens Site is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Antequera is located 45 km from Málaga and 115 km from Córdoba. The cities are connected by a high speed train and the A-45 motorway. Antequera is 160 km from Seville and 102 km from Granada, which is connected by motorway A-92 and in the near future, by the high-speed Transverse Axis Rail.
Due to its strategic position in transport communications, with four airports located approximately one hour away and the railway running from the Port of Algeciras, Antequera is emerging as an important centre of transportation logistics, with several industrial parks, and the new Logistics Centre of Andalusia (Centro Logístico de Andalucía). In addition, the Vega de Antequera, watered by the river Guadalhorce, is a fertile agricultural area that provides cereals, olive oil, and vegetables in abundance.
The nearby natural reserve of El Torcal, famous for its unstable limestone rocks, forms one of the most important karst landscapes in Europe. Antequera has an extensive archaeological and architectural heritage, highlighted by the dolmens of Menga, Viera, and El Romeral, and numerous churches, convents, and palaces from different periods and in different styles. Antequera played a role in the rise of Andalusian nationalism. Antequera was the site of the drafting of the Federal Constitution of Antequera in 1883, and also of the so-called Pact of Antequera Autonomy in 1978, which led to the achievement of autonomy for Andalusia. Antequera was considered as a possible headquarters of the Andalusian government, but lost the vote in favor of Seville.

El Torcal de Antequera is a nature reserve in the Sierra del Torcal mountain range located south of the city of Antequera, in the province of Málaga off the A45 road in Andalusia, Spain. It is known for its unusual land forms, and is regarded as one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Europe. The area was designated a Natural Site of National Interest in July 1929, and a Natural Park Reserve of about 17 square kilometers was created in October 1978. It was then dedicated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016.
There are three routes through the park for walkers that have been marked out with different colored arrows on wooden posts. The shortest route is green at 1.5k, then yellow at 3k, and orange is the longest at 7.25k.
This is a video of the yellow route. It was not difficult and took about two hours to complete. The rock formations were really cool and were begging to be climbed. But, understandably rock climbing is not allowed in the park.
Interestingly, there is archaeology there as well. Neolithic people camped and hunted there and may have had a settlement at one point.
There was also a small museum with a gift shop and a cafe where we got a drink after the hike, sat in the shade, and enjoyed the scenery.

El Torcal es famoso por sus accidentes geográficos inusuales, y está considerado como uno de los paisajes kársticos más impresionantes de Europa. El área fue designada como Sitio Natural de Interés Nacional en Julio de 1929, y en Octubre de 1978 se creó una Reserva de Parque Natural de aproximadamente 17 kilómetros cuadrados. Más tarde, fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 2016.
Hay tres rutas de senderismo a través del parque que están marcadas con flechas de diferentes colores en postes de madera. La ruta más corta es la verde de 1.5 km, luego la amarilla de 3 km, y la naranja es la más larga de 7.25 km.
Este video es de la ruta amarilla. No fue difícil y tardamos aproximadamente dos horas en completarla. Las formaciones rocosas eran realmente increibles y pedían a gritos ser escaladas. Pero, comprensiblemente, la escalada en roca no está permitida en el parque.
Curiosamente, hay arqueología allí también. Durante el neolítico acamparon y cazaron allí y pueden haber habido un asentamiento en algún momento.

Día solitario en el paraje natural de El Torcal debido a las condiciones meteorológicas: viento, niebla, lluvia y mucho barro. Una ruta muy fácil puede convertirse en una difícil cuando las rocas resbalan tanto y la tierra se hace barro. Sin embargo, los altos bloques de piedra calcárea rodeados de la niebla le dan al paisaje un bello aire fantasmagórico-melancólico-lúgubre e incluso sagrado.
Hay varios yacimientos arqueológicos que prueban la presencia humana en esta zona y que datan de hace 10.000 años. Más recientemente, en los siglos XIX y XX, el lugar era frecuentado por bandoleros y maquis (guerrillas antifascistas que luchaban contra el Estado Español del momento tras la Guerra Civil llevando a cabo robos y asaltos y que básicamente buscaban refugio y escondite en zonas montañosas).

Lonely day in the natural area of El Torcal due to the weather conditions: wind, mist, rain and a lot of mud. A very easy route can turn into a difficult one when the rocks are so slippery and the soil becomes mud. However, the tall blocks of limestone rock surrounded by the mist give the landscape a beautiful phantasmagorical-melancholy-mournful-sacred feel to it.
There are several archaeological sites that prove human presence in this area dating from 10.000 years ago. More recently, in the 19th and 20th centuries, the place was frequented by bandits and maquis (anti-fascist guerrillas that fought the Spanish State after the Civil War carrying out robberies and assaults and who basically looked for shelter and hideouts in mountainous areas).
