Balandra Beach & El Triunfo, Baja California Sur by Victor Regalado, Mex Can Drone
Balandra:
Balandra is an isolated, unpopulated coastal area with eight beaches, an interior salt lagoon and a rock formation called El Hongo (the mushroom) which has become the symbol of La Paz (Baja California Sur). The area is about 25 km from La Paz on State Highway 11 on the way to Tecolote and faces the Gulf of California. The area is surrounded by low reddish mountains that contain the occasional desert tree and huge cardón cactus. The red color of the mountains contrast with the white sands of the beaches facing the Gulf with its turquoise, blue and green waters.
El Triunfo
El Triunfo is a small mining town in La Paz Municipality, Baja California Sur, about 4½ miles north of San Antonio. In 1862, silver and gold were discovered in the southern B.C.S. mountains, leading miners from Mexico and the United States to set up camp. Once the largest city in B.C.S, it was home to more than 10,000 miners. In its heyday the town was a cultural center, where Francisca Mendoza taught and performed. Pianos and other instruments were brought to El Triunfo from all over the world and a piano museum still exists. Another remnant of the past is the 35-meter-high smokestack (La Ramona) designed by Gustav Eiffel. The mines shut down in 1926 and most people left. The 2010 census reported a population of 321 inhabitants.
Mexico prepares for Sunday elections
(29 Jun 2018) Mexicans are preparing for Sunday's elections and what may be a total break from its political past.
The historic vote not only includes the election of a new president, but elections for every congressional seat, 128 seats in the Senate and 500 in the Chamber of Deputies.
In addition to the turn over expected for the executive and legislative branches, there are elections in many of the state legislatures which includes eight governorships, the head of government for Mexico City and nearly 1,600 mayoral elections across the nation.
In all, there are some 17,670 names on ballots at the federal, state and local level.
Leading the charge in this, his third attempt at the presidency, is PRD candidate, Lopez Obrador.
Obrador, a 64-year-old former mayor of Mexico City, is the front-runner in most polls leading Ricardo Anaya of the PAN and Jose Antonio Meade, who represents the PRI, Mexico's traditional ruling party and the party of outgoing president Enrique Pena Nieto.
Born in the southern Gulf Coast state of Tabasco, Lopez Obrador touts himself as a champion for poor and rural Mexicans.
He frequently rails against the country's entrenched elite and vows to defeat the mafia of power he blames for rampant corruption.
He attacks the 'mafia of power' and in reality he lives off of it, said Jaime Martinez Flores, a resident of Mexico City, Thursday.
But this time, Lopez Obrador has moderated his positions and rhetoric somewhat, and both sides have reached a cautious detente late in the campaign even if they are not best buddies.
I am undecided, opined Jose Joel Marquez Garcia, another resident. Our country is a ship with no direction.

Despite the sympathetic tone, the intervention of President Enrique Peña Nieto has not calmed the protests against the increase in the price of gasoline and this Wednesday multiplied the riots and blockades by all the country.
In the state of Mexico (Edomex) there were at least 500 people arrested for vandalism in 13 municipalities, while shops in the capital's historic center, where there were 64 detainees, closed ahead of time on rumors of new looting. The National Association of Self-Service Stores reported that 170 stores had been closed and 79 looted, mostly at Edomex. Precisely in the populous Ecatepec the police had to intervene cleanly in an Elektra store to prevent looters continue to take mattresses and televisions with the excuse of the rise in gasoline.
Collective anger fueled the increase in gasoline but added to the increase in electricity, fuel shortages, rising inflation and daily depreciation of the peso.
For this reason Peña Nieto appeared at noon Wednesday on television to calm the protests to the wave of bad news that hit the pockets of Mexicans since the beginning of Christmas.

The rampage of increases, mainly of gasoline that will increase up to 20%, has given way to an incubator of protests that Peña Nieto wanted to neutralize with his surprise public appearance. However, there was no reversal in either the rise or the demonstrations.
I understand the anger that this causes in the population, said Peña Nieto, but not doing so would have jeopardized the economic stability of the country, he had justified. It is not easy to take this step and I appeal to your understanding. The adjustment in prices reflects the increase in international gasoline prices. It is a responsible measure in a priority issue for my government: to preserve the economic stability of the country, said the president for whom if not, the cost would be higher.
Earthquake Shakes Central America as Hurricane Otto Hits Land
A strong earthquake in the Pacific Ocean shook the coastal region of Central America.
US monitoring agencies stated the quake may prompt tsunami waves as a hurricane heads for the Caribbean coasts of Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
The earthquake, that measured at a magnitude of 7.0, occurred over six miles below the seabed, which could amplify its effect.
According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter was located about 90 miles from Puerto Triunfo in El Salvador.
Nicaragua's president has already declared a state of emergency due to Hurricane Otto, which reached land as a Category 2 storm.

The state has thirty six protected areas at the state and federal levels along with 67 areas protected by various municipalities. The Sumidero Canyon National Park was decreed in 1980 with an extension of 21,789 hectares. It extends over two of the regions of the state, the Central Depression and the Central Highlands over the municipalities of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Nuevo Usumacinta, Chiapa de Corzo and San Fernando. The canyon has steep and vertical sides that rise to up to 1000 meters from the river below with mostly tropical rainforest but some areas with xerophile vegetation such as cactus can be found. The river below is called the Grijalva, which has cut the canyon over the course of twelve million years. The canyon is emblematic for the state as it is featured in the state seal.[68][81] The Sumidero Canyon was once the site of an epic battle between the Spainiards and Chiapanecan Indians. Many Chiapanecans chose to throw themselves from the high edges of the canyon rather than be defeated by Spanish forces. Today, the canyon is a popular destination for ecotourism. Visitors often take boat trips down the river that runs through the canyon and enjoy the area's natural beauty including the many birds and abundant vegetation.[15]
The Montes Azules Integral Biosphere Reserve was decreed in 1978. It is located in the northeast of the state in the Lacandon Jungle. It covers 331,200 hectares in the municipalities of Maravilla Tenejapa, Ocosingo and Las Margaritas. It conserves highland perennial rainforest. The Jungle is in the Usumacinta River basin east of the Chiapas Highlands. It is recognized by the United Nations Environment Programme for its global biological and cultural significance. In 1992, the 61,874-hectare Lacantun Reserve, which includes the Classic Maya archeological sites of Yaxchilan and Bonampak, was added to the biosphere reserve.[64][68]
Agua Azul Waterfall Protection Area is in the Northern Mountains in the municipality of Tumbalá. It covers an area of 2,580 hectares of rainforest and pine --oak forest, centered on the waterfalls it is named after.[68] It is located in an area locally called the Mountains of Water, as many rivers flow through here on their way to the Gulf of Mexico. The rugged terrain encourages water falls with large pools at the bottom, that the falling water has carved into the sedimentary rock and limestone. Agua Azul is one of the best known in the state. The waters of the Agua Azul River emerge from a cave that forms a natural bridge of thirty meters and five small waterfalls in succession, all with pools of water at the bottom. In addition to Agua Azul, the area has other attractions—such as the Shumuljá River, which contains rapids and waterfalls, the Misol Há Waterfall with a thirty meter drop, the Bolón Ajau Waterfall with a fourteen meter drop, the Gallito Copetón rapids, the Blacquiazules Waterfalls, and a section of calm water called the Agua Clara.[82]
The El Ocote Biosphere Reserve was decreed in 1982 located in the Northern Mountains at the boundary with the Sierra Madre del Sur in the municipalities of Ocozocoautla, Cintalapa and Tecpatán. It has a surface area of 101,288.15 hectares and preserves a rainforest area with karst formations. The Lagunas de Montebello National Park was decreed in 1959 and consists of 7371 hectares near the Guatemalan border in the municipalities of La Independencia and La Trinitaria. It contains two of the most threatened ecosystems in Mexico the cloud rainforest and the Soconusco rainforest. The El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve, decreed in 1990, is located in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas in the municipalities of Acacoyagua, Ángel Albino Corzo, Monte Cristo de Guerrero, La Concordia, Mapastepec, Pijijiapan, Siltepec and Villa Corzo near the Pacific Ocean with 119,177.29 hectares. It conserves areas of tropical rainforest and many freshwater systems endemic to Central America.[68] It is home to around 400 species of birds including several rare species such as the horned guan, the quetzal and the azure-rumped tanager.[15] The Palenque National Forest is centered on the archeological site of the same name and was decreed in 1981. It is located in the municipality of Palenque where the Northern Mountains meet the Gulf Coast Plain. It extends over 1,381 hectares of tropical rainforest. The Laguna Bélgica Conservation Zone is located in the north west of the state in the municipality of Ocozocoautla. It covers forty two hectares centered on the Bélgica Lake.

? about the Mexican taco bike rime take off on pimp my bike and the Mexican Suicide Zone... Chiapas (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈtʃjapas], [tʃiˈapas]), officially Free and Sovereign State of Chiapas (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Chiapas), is one of the 31 states that, with the Federal District, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided into 118 municipalities and its capital city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Other important cites in Chiapas include San Cristóbal de las Casas, Comitán, and Tapachula. Located in Southwestern Mexico, it is the southernmost State of Mexico. It is bordered by the states of Tabasco to the north, Veracruz to the northwest and Oaxaca to the west. To the east Chiapas borders Guatemala, and to the south the Pacific Ocean.
In general, Chiapas has a humid, tropical climate. In the north, in the area bordering Tabasco, near Teapa, rainfall can average more than 3,000 mm (120 in) per year. In the past, natural vegetation at this region was lowland, tall perennial rainforest, but this vegetation has been destroyed almost completely to give way to agriculture and ranching. Rainfall decreases moving towards the Pacific Ocean, but it is still abundant enough to allow the farming of bananas and many other tropical crops near Tapachula. On the several parallel sierras or mountain ranges running along the center of Chiapas, climate can be quite temperate and foggy, allowing the development of cloud forests like those of the Reserva de la Biosfera el Triunfo, home to a handful of Resplendent Quetzals and Horned Guans.
Chiapas is home to the ancient Mayan ruins of Palenque, Yaxchilán, Bonampak, and Chinkultic. It is also home to one of the largest indigenous populations in the country with twelve federally recognized ethnicities. Much of the state's history is centered on the subjugation of these peoples with occasional rebellions. The last of these rebellions was the 1994 Zapatista uprising, which succeeded in obtaining new rights for indigenous people[citation needed] but also divided much of the indigenous peoples of the state History
The official name of the state is Chiapas. The name derives from Chiapan or Tepechiapan the name of an indigenous population. The term is from Nahuatl and has been translated to mean sage seed hill and water below the hill. After the Spanish arrived, they established two cities called Chiapas de los Indios and Chiapas de los Españoles, with the name of Provincia de Chiapas for the area around the cities. The first coat of arms for the state was created in 1535 as that of the Ciudad Real (San Cristobal de las Casas). The modern coat of arms was created by Chiapas painter Javier Vargas Ballinas.[9]
Pre-Columbian
Jaguar sculpture from Cintalapa dating between 1000 to 400 BC on display at the Regional Museum of Anthropology and History of Chiapas.
Hunter gatherers began to occupy the central valley of the state around 7000 BCE, but little is known about their lives. The oldest archeological remains in the seat are located at the Santa Elena Ranch in Ocozocoautla whose finds include tools and weapons made of stone and bone. It also includes burials.[10] In the pre Classic period from 1800 BCE to 300 CE, agricultural villages appeared all over the state although hunter gather groups would persist for long after the era.[11]
Recent excavations in the Soconusco region of the state indicate that the oldest civilization to appear in what is now modern Chiapas is that of the Mokaya, which were cultivating corn and living in houses as early as 1500 BCE, making them one of the oldest in Mesoamerica.[11][12] There is speculation that these were the forefathers of the Olmec, migrating across the Grijalva Valley and onto the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico to the north, which was Olmec territory. One of these people's ancient cities is now the archeological site of Chiapa de Corzo, in which was found the oldest calendar known on a piece of ceramic with a date of 36 BCE. This is three hundred years before the Mayans developed their calendar. The descendents of Mokaya are the Mixtec-Zoque.[11]
During the pre Classic, it is known that most of Chiapas was not Olmec, but had close relations with them, especially the Olmecs of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Olmec influenced sculpture can be found in Chiapas and products from the state including amber, magnetite and ilmenite were exported to Olmec lands. The Olmecs came to what is now the northwest of the state looking for amber with one of the main evidences for this called the Simojovel Ax.[13]

Flying my Mavic on a tropical mountain in Honduras
Trujillo Honduras is a beautiful place to visit and fly, and with any luck I will find my way out there again one day.
Trujillo is a city and a municipality on the northern Caribbean coast of the Honduran department of Colón, of which the city is the capital.
The municipality has a population of about 30,000 (2003). The city is located on a bluff overlooking the Bay of Trujillo. Behind the city rise two prominent mountains, Mount Capiro and Mount Calentura. Three Garifuna fishing villages—Santa Fe, San Antonio, and Guadelupe—are located along the beach.
Trujillo has received plenty of attention as the potential site of a proposed Honduran charter city project,[1] according to an idea originally advocated by American economist Paul Romer. Often referred to as a Hong Kong in Honduras, and advocated by among others the Trujillo-born Honduran president Porfirio Lobo Sosa, the project has also been met with skepticism and controversy,[2] especially due to its supposed disregard for the local Garifuna culture.
Christopher Columbus landed in Trujillo on August 14, 1502, during his fourth and final voyage to the Americas. Columbus named the place Punta de Caxinas. It was the first time he touched the Central American mainland. He noticed that the water in this part of the Caribbean was very deep and therefore called the area Golfo de Honduras, i.e., The Gulf of the Depths (see: Bay of Honduras).

The history of the modern town begins in 1524, shortly after the conquest of Mexico by Hernán Cortés. Cortés sent Cristóbal de Olid to find a Spanish outpost in the region, and he established a town named Triunfo de la Cruz in the vicinity. When Olid began using the town as his base for establishing his own realm in Central America, Cortés sent Francisco de las Casas to remove him. Las Casas lost most of his fleet in a storm, but he was nevertheless able to defeat Olid and restore the region to Cortés. Upon assuming control, Las Casas decided to relocate the town to its present location, because the natural harbor was larger. At the same time, Triunfo de la Cruz was renamed Trujillo. His deputy, Juan López de Aguirre was charged with establishing the new town, but he sailed off, leaving another deputy, named Medina, to found the town. In the coming years Trujillo became more important as a shipment point for gold and silver mined in the interior of the country. Because of its sparse population, the city also became a frequent target of pirates.
Under Spanish rule Trujillo became the capital of Honduras, but because of its vulnerability the capital was changed to the inland town of Comayagua. The fortress, Fortaleza de Santa Bárbara (El Castillo), which sits on the bluff overlooking the bay, was built by the Spanish around 1550. Nevertheless, it was inadequate to really defend Trujillo from pirates—the largest gathering of pirates in history took place in the vicinity in 1683—or rival colonial powers: the Dutch, French, and English. The town was destroyed several times between 1633 and 1797, and during the eighteenth century, the Spanish all but abandoned Trujillo because it was deemed indefensible.
When Honduras obtained its independence in 1821, Trujillo lost its status of capital city permanently first to Comayagua, which lost it to Tegucigalpa in 1880. From this same period onwards Trujillo began to prosper again.
In 1860, the mercenary William Walker, who had seized control of neighboring Nicaragua, was finally caught and executed in Trujillo. His tomb is a local tourist attraction.
American author O. Henry (William Sydney Porter) spent about a year living in Honduras, primarily in Trujillo. He later wrote a number of short stories that took place in Coralio in the fictional Central American country of Anchuria, based on the real town of Trujillo. Most of these stories appear in his book Of Cabbages and Kings.
