The Flåm Line (Norwegian: Flåmsbana) is a 20.2-kilometer (12.6 mi) long railway line between Myrdal and Flam in Aurland, Norway. A branch line of the Bergen Line, it runs through the valley of Flamsdalen and connects the mainline with Sognefjord. The line's elevation difference is 863 meters (2,831 ft); it has ten stations, twenty tunnels and one bridge. The maximum gradient is 5.5 percent (1:18), making it the steepest standard
gauge railway in Europe. Because of its steep gradient and picturesque nature, the Flam Line is now almost exclusively a tourist service and has become the third-most visited tourist attraction in Norway.
Construction of the line started in 1924, with the line opening in 1940. It allowed the district of Sogn access to Bergen and Oslo via the Bergen Line. Electric traction was taken into use in 1944; at first El 9 locomotives were used, and from 1982 El 11. Until 1991, the train connected with a ferry service from Flam to Gudvangen. In 1992, freight services were terminated, and due to low ticket prices and high operating costs, the line was nearly closed. In 1998, Flam Utvikling took over marketing and ticket sale for the line, prices were heavily increased and El 17 locomotives were introduced. The trains remain operated by the Norwegian State Railways (NSB), while the line itself is owned and operated by the Norwegian National Rail Administration.

Flåm Norway – Stegastein Viewing Platform – Train to Vatnahalsen
Norway and Iceland 2019 – Video 7 of 22
On this day we visited the small Norwegian village of Flam, located at the end of the Sognefjord. The Sognefjord is the longest fjord in Norway, stretching some 120 miles from the coast into the interior of Norway. In the morning, we took a bus to the Stegastein viewing platform for spectacular views of the fjord below. In the afternoon, we took the Flam Valley train to the Vatnahalsen hotel, with a stop along the way to see the Kjosfossen waterfall.

You will find the beautiful small town of Flåm nestled deep in a tributary of the world's longest and deepest fjord, the 204 kilometre long and 1308 meter deep Sognefjord. Surrounded by steep mountainsides, roaring waterfalls and deep valleys, this area is a paradise for everyone looking for a one-of-a-kind experience with nature. Modern transportation makes today's Flåm a junction that is easily accessible whether you are travelling by car, boat, train or by bus. Large cruise ships in the harbour are a daily site throughout the spring and summer months, and it is only a short walk from Flåm Port and the many fjord boats to a trip on the Flåm Railway - or maybe a visit to the Fretheim Hotel.
Travel destination with traditions
The name Flåm means little place between steep mountains, and at the end of the 1800's many cruise ships with English and German travellers found their way here to experience Norwegian fjords, mountains and waterfalls. The ships' passengers laid the foundation for hotel operations and a steady stream of tourists, who were transported in two-wheeled buggies through the spectacular scenery. After the Bergensbanen railway was opened in 1909, Flåm became a crossroad for passengers, mail and freight to and from the trains between Oslo and Bergen, in connection with the steamships on the fjord. The old Navvy road from Haugastøl and Finse down to Flåm - Rallarvegen - has now become an attraction in itself, with thousands of cyclists every summer and autumn.
