Saxon Switzerland - Alongside the Elbe | Discover Germany
Saxon Switzerland is a national park around the Elbe valley south-east of Dresden which forms part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Like the many painters who were based here in the 18th century, modern day tourists often set out on the River Elbe to explore this romantic landscape by boat.

The history of Königstein castle
Königstein castle is one of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe and is located in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Saxon Switzerland above the village of Königstein. It is perched on a 9.5 hectare plateau, 240 metres above the Elbe river. People have lived here since the Bronze Age, 3100 years ago. The outer wall is 1,800 metres long and from the base it is up to 42 metres high using the sandstone cliffs as additional support. At the centre of the complex, there is a 152.5 meter well, the second deepest castle well in Europe.
The fortress exists thanks to its environment. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains were created due to the uplift of ocean floors in historic times which then due to weathering created the rock formations that we can see in the region today. It is the debris of a landscape which in millions of years time will no longer exist. Part of that debris are the plateaux and the Königstein plateau is one of them. An ideal defensive position located above an important trade route and close to a border that has existed since the castle was first created.
There are a number of ways of getting here. One can take the Dresden S Bahn, get off at Königstein and walk. Alternatively there is a car park below the castle, one can walk from there or take the shuttle bus. If one comes by coach, there is a large coach stop at the base of the castle, one can pick up a ticket there and enter the castle either by panoramic lift or follow the trail up as I shall show in this film.
What I shall do in this video is to tell you a little bit about the history of the castle at the same time as showing you what can be seen inside. I have made other films relating to this fortress and Saxon Switzerland as a whole which may also be of interest.
I came here as part of my tour of Saxon Switzerland. My interest was generated by seeing some of the paintings of the region done in the eighteenth and nineteenth century when this was a popular tourist destination for the wealthy. As far as the region is concerned, I think it has the best walking trails that I have seen, the scenery is spectacular yet accessible by bike. I travelled by motorhome but there are all sorts of other accommodation providers and public transport is excellent.

Adventures In Saxony, Germany (Saxon Switzerland & Dresden)
From the Bastei Bridge, and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Saxon Switzerland,, to Dresden's beautiful architecture, it’s time to get to know Saxony in Germany.
Last month Macca from An Adventurous World and I headed off on an epic adventure with two very different elements. We explored the stunning natural landscapes of Saxon Switzerland, hiking around the Bastei, checking out the Bastei Bridge and some stunning waterfalls and viewpoints too.
We also visited Dresden, to see the stunning architecture of a city that has been almost entirely rebuilt.
Although I've visited Germany five times, this trip showed me a whole new side to the country. I can't wait to see more soon!
Big thanks to Germany Tourism and Saxony Tourism for inviting us to explore this beautiful region of Germany! As always all opinions are our own.

Bastei Bridge Germany - A natural wonder
From Dresden Germany I took a 50 minute train trip, about $7 each way, to Bastei Bridge near the town of Rathen along the Elbe River. Bastei Bridge is a natural landmark with remarkable stone formations located in the hills. It has a number of small bridges that let you get some good views. There's a 2 euro cost for one section which is really worth it. The hike is uphill but but a kid can do it.
P.S. I visited this Bastei Bridge and Dresden for fun and to research my book, a biography titled, Ludwig Richter: The Story Artist. Ludwig Richter was a wonderful Dresden artist and illustrator from the 1800's. His life and work is fascinating, funny, and inspirational. He lived through a terrible Napoleonic war, saw battle, traveled mostly by foot to an artist community in Rome, climbed Mount Vesuvius, escaped bandits, fell in love, suffered tragic loss, but went on to become to become one of the most beloved illustrator of his time. His work would later influence a young Walt Disney. The biography is at Amazon and is free to read if you have kindle unlimited or a $3 for a download. You can read it with the kindle app. A paperback copy is also available. The book has over 150 images by Ludwig Richter as well as his artistic friends and colleagues. I hope you check it out! No time like the present! Thanks :-)
BASTEI, Elbsandsteingebirge // Stunning Rock Formation in Germany
This video features the Bastei rock formation in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Germany.
The Bastei is a rock formation towering 194 metres above the Elbe River in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Germany. Reaching a height of 305 metres above sea level, the jagged rocks of the Bastei were formed by water erosion over one million years ago. They are situated near Rathen, not far from Pirna southeast of the city of Dresden, and are the major landmark of the Saxon Switzerland National Park. They are also part of a climbing and hiking area that extends over the borders into the Bohemian Switzerland (Czech Republic).

???? Rock Climbing in Saxon Switzerland | Germany
Saxon Switzerland is located 30 kilometres southeast of Dresden, close to the border with the Czech Republic. The region is well-known for its beautiful landscapes, sandy rocks and of course the famous Bastei Bridge.
Climbing - The peak of happiness
Climbing in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is an indescribable experience. In the birthplace of free climbing, climbing pleasure is spread across around 1,100 free-standing sandstone rocks and a stunning natural backdrop.
Besides the uniqueness of climbing in the heart of the Saxon Switzerland National Park, it is the distinct climbing rules and difficulty scale that makes the summit experience so special for each climber. Anyone who has scaled a peak here will not want to leave the magic of this climbing region.
Saxon climbing rules
The Saxon climbing rules are exacting and important, as they protect the sensitive sandstone and sensitive habitats in the national park region. Metal safety equipment, such as chockstones, are forbidden, solid rings are also rare, and only runners are allowed.
The rope is only to be used for safety purposes and for abseiling. In contrast to other climbing regions, achieving safety is a special art in the Elbe sandstone. The rock surface must not be modified – except to attach retaining rings on first ascents. Chemical aids like magnesia must not be used. In addition, the rock must not be climbed when it is wet or crumbling.
If you’re flying in, the closest airports are Dresden, Leipzig and Prague. If you want to continue your journey by public transport you can catch a train to one of the main towns, Pirna, Königstein or Bad Schandau. The Euro City Train (EC) between Prague and Berlin stops several times a day at Bad Schandau.

Saxon Switzerland National Park, Saxony, Germany, May 2015 - Day 2 (Malerweg Section 4)
Hiking in Germany's Saxon Switzerland National Park, incorporating sections of the Malerweg Trail, with my friend from Vienna, Markus Schellhorn, May 2015. Our base was a campsite in the village of Mittelndorf, not far from Bad Schandau, south-east of Dresden. Together with the Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic, the Saxon Switzerland region forms the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Saxon Switzerland alone has some 1,000 climbing peaks, as well as several hollows. The area is popular with Dresden locals and international climbers alike. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.
