Gold Mining and Historical Museum - Gympie
Gympie is about 160 kilometres north of the state capital, Brisbane. The city lies on the Mary River, which floods the town periodically. At the 2011 census, Gympie had a population of 18,602.
The Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum houses memorabilia from the early gold mining era, as well as displays showcasing military, rural, transport, communications, and steam development in Australia.
The town of Gympie has an important and colourful history, from being cited as the Town that saved Queensland from Bankruptcy to being the home of Andrew Fisher, Labor's second Prime Minister.
Everybody is invited to visit our Museum where you can find out just how Gympie saved Queensland and discover more of the region's past and present. The Museum houses a vast collection of documentation, artifacts and photographs dating from the discovery of gold in 1867 by James Nash to the recently closed operations of the Gympie Eldorado Goldmine.
In 1867, James Nash discovered 72 ounces of Gold in just 6 days. This started the Gold Rush in Gympie and it became known as The Town that saved Queensland from Bankruptcy.
Gympie has has seen the rush for alluvial gold, deep reef mining, reprocessing of tailings and the re-opening of the mines in the mid 1980s. With the recent cessation of mining, there still remains the lure of residual gold and there may well be more to come.
You can learn all about this, and much more of Gympies colourful and historical past right here at the Museum. The site comprises over 5 hectares containing over 30 display areas in and around 15 major buildings.
Gympie is heralded as the town that saved Queensland from bankruptcy due to drought and low wool prices back in the 1800s. Thanks to James Nash discovery of gold where the Gympie Town Hall now stands back in 1867, the Gold Rush was started.
Within 6 months of James Nash’ windfall, over 15,000 men had raced to Gympie to dig for their fortunes. The town grew at a rapid rate and amazingly many of the original buildings are still there.
Gympie's Gold Mining and Historical Museum showcases not only Gympie's rich gold mining history but also other aspects of the region's past era including steam machinery, agricultural, dairying, vehicles, gemstone and shell collections.
Andrew Fisher House (named after Australia's second Labour Prime Minister 1908-1915) is part of the Museums collection of historical buildings housed with period furniture. Also the award winning Military Collection of the Fifth Light Horse Regiment which includes military equipment and memorabilia of all sons and daughters of the Gympie area that went to war.
Try your luck at the Museum's Gold Panning and take home a specimen of Gympie Gold - a great time for the whole family. Tour groups welcome.

Fletch heads to custom body fabricators 'Mob Steel' after only 14 years in operation they have become one of the top custom car builders in the US. Taking Detroit vintage steel, big body cars of the 50s, 60's and 70s the likes of Lincoln's and Cadillacs and transforming them into menacing modern-day machines, celebrating America's automotive history.
Adam, the owner of Mob Steel, talks about the origins of his custom car shop and it's transformation from building cars to owners specs to building their own custom cars under the Mob Steel brand. Adam who grew up in the automotive manufacturing industry and reflects on the demise of automotive manufacturing in the USA, a story that Australians are only too familiar with. There was a market for steel wheels, but a manufacturing resource wasn't, so they started a wheel company, Detroit Steel Wheels to support the automotive industry workers, suppliers and the big three manufacturers in the US. The company now services a strong need locally in the USA and a growing market around the world for his products.
A 1913 Biavtogo concept cyclecar manufactured by James Scripps Booth In the US is one of the latest projects given to Mob Steel to restore for the Detroit Historical Society. The team at Mob Steel are very proud to be given the task of this restoration and see this as a vindication of the craftsmanship and quality of their work. Another project is a 1965 Lincoln Continental modification in progress only weeks out from the SEMA Show in Las Vegas
Finally, Fletch revisits the home of Wes Myrick who featured in the last US series of Classic Restos and recently passed away, with some edited highlights of the episode featuring Wes.

1958 Maserati Eldorado Racecar
Some cars have gone down in history for legendary wins, for the innovations they introduced or for the drivers who piloted them to glory. Others, meanwhile, have become veritable icons for what they represented: a unique story; a turning point in history; a social phenomenon; an event that rippled beyond the stands of the race track to ultimately define an era.
One such case was the Maserati “Eldorado”, which became famous in 1958 as the first single-seater car in Europe to be sponsored by a brand not linked to the world of motorsport. The brand in question was Eldorado, an ice-cream manufacturer.
This was the first example of modern sponsorship, where the car was painted in the colours of the partner company, abandoning the traditional colour assigned to each country by the International Federation.
This was a real revolution for the day, of vital importance to the future of motorsport, which from that moment on opened its doors to new financial backers.
Maserati was commissioned to build the car by Gino Zanetti, owner of the Eldorado ice-cream company. Determined to promote his brand on the international stage, Zanetti turned to the House of the Trident to create a single-seater car to compete in the “Trofeo dei due Mondi” (Race of Two Worlds) at Monza: the Automobile Club d'Italia had organised a 500 Mile race at the circuit based on the Indianapolis 500, with top American drivers lining up alongside Europe’s cream of the crop.
The Maserati 420/M/58, chassis number 4203, was thus finished with a cream coloured livery, instead of Italian racing red. The name Eldorado was emblazoned in bold black lettering along the sides of the car, with two additional smaller logos on the nose and below the small deflector that acted as a windshield.
The logo with the face of the smiling cowboy was positioned in the centre of the nose and on the sides of the rear fin.
Below the two Eldorado brands on the sides, in bright racing red was “Italia”, denoting the nationality of the sponsor as well as that of the racing car manufacturer.
The long silhouette of the “Eldorado” also bore the name of the driver chosen to race it in the “Monzanapolis”: Stirling Moss, one of the greatest drivers in the history of motorsports, and a former Maserati driver.
