20 km journey without steering, accelerating and without brake pedal
Links
Bus Rapid Transit
The Mercedes-Benz Future Bus with CityPilot is making its first public journey on part of Europe's longest BRT route (BRT = Bus Rapid Transit) in the Netherlands. This links Amsterdam's Schiphol airport with the town of Haarlem. This almost 20 km long route is a real challenge for the
Mercedes-Benz Future Bus, as it has numerous bends and passes through tunnels and across junctions with traffic lights.
The Mercedes-Benz Future Bus with CityPilot is well able to meet this challenge: it has a top speed of 70 km/h on the open road, is able to recognise obstacles and pedestrians on the road, comes to a precise halt at bus stops, opens and closes its doors, moves off automatically and communicates with traffic light systems. Throughout the journey the driver does not need to operate the accelerator or brake at all, and only needs to take the wheel in accordance with traffic regulations when there is oncoming traffic. However, the driver is able to intervene at any time and immediately take control if required.
Mercedes-Benz Future Bus with CityPilot – the future of the city bus has begun. It is ideally suitable for BRT systems, with which it is possible to resolve worldwide traffic problems in densely populated areas and metropolitan regions. It operates highly efficiently, significantly improves the level of safety and relieves driver workload. Daimler Buses is thereby developing the bus transport system of tomorrow.

Brixton is a district of South London within the London Borough of Lambeth. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London.
Brixton is mainly residential with a prominent street market and substantial retail sector.t is a multiethnic community, with a large percentage of its population being of African and Caribbean descent. It lies within Inner South London and is bordered by Stockwell, Clapham, Streatham, Camberwell, Tulse Hill and Herne Hill. The district houses the main offices of the London Borough of Lambeth.
The area remained undeveloped until the beginning of the 19th century, the main settlements being near Stockwell, Brixton Hill and Coldharbour Lane. With the opening of Vauxhall Bridge in 1816 improved access to Central London led to a process of suburban development. The largest single development, and one of the last in suburban character, was Angell Town, laid out in the 1850s on the east side of Brixton Road, and so named after a family that owned land in Lambeth from the late 17th century until well into the 20th.
One of a few surviving windmills in London, built in 1816, and surrounded by houses built during Brixton's Victorian expansion, is to be found just off Brixton Hill. When the London sewerage system was constructed during the mid-19th century, its designer Sir Joseph Bazalgette incorporated flows from the River Effra, which used to flow through Brixton, into his 'high-level interceptor sewer', also known as the Effra sewer.
Brixton was transformed into a middle class suburb between the 1860s and 1890s. Railways linked Brixton with the centre of London when the Chatham Main Line was built through the area by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway in the 1860s. In 1880, Electric Avenue was so named after it became the first street in London to be lit by electricity. In this time, large expensive houses were constructed along the main roads in Brixton, which were converted into flats and boarding houses at the start of the 20th century as the middle classes were replaced by an influx of the working classes. .
The Brixton area was bombed during World War II, contributing to a severe housing crisis, which in turn led to urban decay. This was followed by slum clearances and the building of council housing. In the 1940s and 1950s, many immigrants, particularly from the West Indies, settled in Brixton. More recent immigrants include a large Portuguese community (see Little Portugal) and other EU citizens. Brixton also has an increasingly ageing population, which affects housing strategies in the area.
Brixton was the scene of riots in April 1981 at a time when Brixton underwent deep social and economic problems—high unemployment, high crime, poor housing, no amenities—in a predominantly African-Caribbean community. The Metropolitan Police began Operation Swamp 81 at the beginning of April, aimed at reducing street crime, largely through the repeated use of the so-called sus law, which allowed police officers to stop and search any individual on the grounds of mere 'suspicion' of possible wrongdoing. Plain clothes police officers were dispatched into Brixton, and within five days almost 1,000 people were stopped and searched under this law. There was intense local indignation at this, since the vast majority of those stopped by the police were young black men. The riot resulted in almost 279 injuries to police and 45 injuries to members of the public; over a hundred vehicles were burned, including 56 police vehicles; and almost 150 buildings were damaged, with thirty burned. There were 82 arrests. Reports suggested that up to 5,000 people were involved in the riot.
There is debate regarding whether Brixton's recent renaissance is regeneration or gentrification. Some believe the area has slowly undergone a process of gentrification since the 1990s and has resulted in many wealthy middle class individuals taking advantage of the area's location and the thriving Bohemian art scene. However, others argue that the area is undergoing exciting regeneration. In recent years Brixton has hosted a regular farmers' market on Station Road, as well as Pop-up restaurants and pop-up shops. New art galleries, delicatessens, bars, cafes and vintage clothing stores, particularly in and around Brixton Village Market have also opened, which some believe is gentrifying the area in a similar way to that in nearby Clapham.

In September 2006 the airline signed a memorandum of understanding with General Electric to launch the GEnx-1A-72 engine for the aircraft. The nearly 74-metre-long A350-1000 is the largest variant of the A350 family. It is to seat 366 passengers in a typical three-class layout with a range of 8,000 nautical miles (14,800 km). With a 9-abreast configuration, it is designed to replace the Airbus A340-600 and compete with the Boeing 777-300ER and 777-9.

Jazz Age: Bert Firman Orchestra - Pasadena, 1924
The “Midnight Follies” Orchestra (Bert Firman’s Band) – Pasadena, Fox-Trot (Warren), Zonophone 1924 (UK)
NOTE: Bert Firman (né Feuerman) (1906 – 1999) English bandleader of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. His parents were both Polish immigrants (his father was of the Polish/Jewish origins) and Beret was born in London, as well as his three elder brothers who were also musicians. Bert was taught violin and he won a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music early in his life. His first job was at the age of 13 at the Playhouse Theatre, London, where he was part of a quintet playing entr'acte music. A year later his father negotiated a position for him in the orchestra at the Victoria Hotel in Northumberland Avenue and two years later At the Metropolie Hotel with the Midnight Follies Orchestra. Shortly after beginning this job, the current bandleader was indisposed, and Firman was offered the band leading. He was then only 16, the youngest bandleader in the world. In 1924 Firman became musical director for Zonophone Records (a subsidiary of HMV) and in the following five years he recorded over 750 sides for them. During the 1920s Firman directed several orchestras billed as the Midnight Follies, the Devonshire Restaurant and the Carlton Hotel bands. Besides recording with a large dance orchestra, Firman also produced recordings with a smaller group The Rhythmic Eight, which included prominent British musicians: Frank Guarente, Arthur Lally and Jack Jackson. In 1929 Firman was given a six-month contract to be a guest conductor at N.B.C., becoming the first British bandleader to broadcast in America. He then spent some time in Hollywood adding music to the silent movies. Back in Europe, Firman formed a band in London, which he took to Les Ambassadeurs restaurant in Paris. He spent several years in France before returning to London in 1937 to form another band. He played at the Cafe de Paris until the outbreak of the war, when he joined up with the Stars in Battledress, an organization dedicated to entertaining the troops in Europe, North Africa and Middle East. After the war Firman was leading bands in London and in Paris, where he formed a band at the Bagatelle Club, with Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. When the age of the big bands was coming to an end, Firman withdrew from the music business, working on the London Metal Exchange until his full retirement in the 1970s.

Brixton Dead Zone — Corporate Fascism
Brixton Dead Zone: Rashid Nix takes us on a tour of the Brixton Dead Zone (BDZ); an area or zone of the famous Brixton market, where the remaining traders are left void of bumper takings in the week leading up the Christmas, due to a decision by Network Rail to close down the arches in their continued plan of gentrification for the zone.
