Halesworth is a small market town and electoral ward, in the northeastern corner of Suffolk, England. The population was measured at 4,726 in the 2011 Census. It is located 15 miles (24 km) south west of Lowestoft, and stands on a small tributary of the River Blyth, 9 miles (14 km) upstream from Southwold. The town is served by Halesworth railway station on the Ipswich–Lowestoft East Suffolk Line. Halesworth is twinned with both Bouchain in France and Eitorf in Germany.
A Roman settlement, Halesworth has a medieval church; St Mary's with Victorian additions and a variety of houses, from early timber-framed buildings to the remnants of Victorian prosperity. Former almshouses used to house the Halesworth & District Museum (open from May to September) but this has now been moved to Halesworth railway station. The Town Trail walk provides opportunity to discover the history of Halesworth.
Halesworth is primarily centred on a pedestrianised shopping street known as the Thoroughfare. Each year the Thoroughfare hosts a popular food, drink and craft fair, termed the Thoroughfair, to raise money for good causes. Halesworth is the home to the New Cut Arts Centre, which hosts the acclaimed annual Halesworth Arts Festival.
Halesworth has the largest Millennium Green in the UK with around 44 acres (18 ha) of grazing marsh providing a haven for wildlife close to the town centre. The rivers in this area are home to herons, kingfishers and otters. Nearby villages include Cratfield, Wissett, Chediston, Walpole, Blyford, Linstead Parva, Wenhaston, Thorington, Spexhall and Bramfield. The village of Holton is 1-mile (1.6 km) away with a large open space for walking called Holton Pits.
Halesworth railway station is connected to Ipswich and Lowestoft. It is the best unstaffed railway station for 2004 and 2005. Services are available to Lowestoft and Ipswich and are run by Abellio Greater Anglia. There has probably been a church on the site of St Mary's, since Saxon times. Halesworth is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 recording Ulf the priest to be in charge of the parish.

THE BRITISH POWER BOAT COMPANY - 'Wartime' by Stan - World War Two - Hythe, Southampton
It was formed on 30 September 1927 when Hubert Scott-Paine bought and renamed the Hythe Shipyard with the intention of transforming it into one of the most modern mass production boat building yards in the country. Together with his chief designer, Fred Cooper, the company produced many racing boats which won numerous awards around Europe, including Miss England II and Miss Britain III.
From 1930 the British Power Boat Company supplied seaplane tenders to the Air Ministry, commencing with RAF200, a 37-footer. The trials of this and other boats was carried out by T E Shaw on behalf of the Royal Air Force, and he and Scott-Paine worked together over the next few years. These tenders were powered by twin 100bhp Meadows petrol engines giving a maximum speed of 29knots (some of the later ones were fitted with Perkins S6M diesels).
The company marketed its own modified Napier: Sea Lion engines under the name Power Marine Engines.
On 3 August 1931 the factory burnt to the ground, but was rapidly rebuilt as the most modern and efficient boatyard in Britain. Motor Torpedo Boats with a hard chine were designed, built, and increasingly sold to the British Admiralty. Armoured target boats were also built for the RAF, proving very successful and cost-effective, together with tenders for Imperial Airways flying boats, and admiral's barges.
In 1939, due to the difficulties in obtaining British engines, Scott-Paine took PT-9 to the US to enable Elco to mass-produce PT boats using Packard motors.
During World War II the British Power Boat Company built large numbers of Motor Torpedo Boats, High Speed Motor Launches, and Motor Gun Boats (previously known as Motor Anti-Submarine Boats), being credited with saving the lives of over 13,000 service personnel.
All unfinished contracts were cancelled at the cessation of hostilities and the British Power Boat Company closed in 1946.

This video is of the opening and closing of the Hythe Marina Village Lock Gates which was filmed in 2006 by a friend of mine Mr A. Miller who very kindly supplied this footage to me to use so all credits go to him. In this video you will see a special boat that enters the lock called the MV Alison Macgregor it is a Blythe 33 Catamaran built in 1997 and is a MKII version, this boat is run by volunteers and takes people with all disabilities and their carers out on boat trips around Southampton Water.

Hythe is the hidden gem of the New Forest towns. Nestling between the New Forest and Southampton Water, its varied coastline offers fascinating views of one of the world’s busiest ports.
People visit Hythe for many reasons - to shop in one of the many independently owned shops or to enjoy a drink or a meal in one of its excellent cafés, pubs or restaurants. But what visitors enjoy most of all are the unrivalled views of the water and the beautiful cruise liners arriving in the port of Southampton. You can stroll along the beautiful and diverse waterfront, or you can just sit and enjoy the ever changing vista.
Throughout the year visitors are attracted by the Markets. The Tuesday Street Market is every week in the High St and has stalls selling flowers, olives, locally sourced meat, local preserves and chutneys, photographs, fabrics, baked good, fruit and veg, plants, fresh fish, and jewellery among other things. Occasional specialty markets such as the 'France at Home', 'Italia in Piazza' and the Bank Holiday Monday Arts, Craft, Vintage and Collectibles Market. On the last Saturday of November is the hugely popular Mistletoe Fayre.
There has been a ferry crossing between Hythe and Southampton since at least 1575. The 640 metre long pier was completed in 1881 and the electric railway and train were introduced in 1922. It is now the world’s oldest pier train. There is a half hourly ferry service to Southampton from the end of the pier and the 15 minute trip allows you to get ‘up close and personal’ with all the latest cruise liners.
In the early part of the 20th century, flying boats were built and operated from what is now Hythe Marine Park. T E Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, worked at the British Power Boat Company and lived in the house in Shore Rd recognised with a Blue Plaque. The hovercraft, invented by Sir Christopher Cockerell - who lived in Hythe until he died - was also developed here and there is a Memorial to the Hovercraft in the gardens of The Grove adjacent to the original test slipway.
In the area now known as the Waterside, Hythe is the central village of numerous small communities now vastly expanded by dormitory housing serving the petrochemical industries in the Waterside as well as the City of Southampton. Hythe with its sister communities of Dibden and Dibden Purlieu are part of the Parish of Hythe and Dibden.

Kayaking the River Thames in Flood - Oxford, UK 2014
It's the Monsoon Season, English style. The rains beat down, the rivers flood and the fields fill up with water. It's December 29, 2013 and the flood plains of Oxfordshire look like the Mekong Delta. All we're missing is the rice.
This was a trip on the River Thames in flood: Bablock Hythe to Northmoor Lock and back. The river had burst its banks and there was massive flooding. The half-sunken trees mark the banks of the river. We paddled against the current by keeping to the fields and paddling over sunken wire fences and hedgerows. On a few stretches we had to join the main current and paddle hard against it.
The return journey was a rapid drift down in the main flow of the Thames. It took us 2 hours to paddle upstream and 20 minutes for the return!

Just where has this year gone? The last series of 2017 but a couple of trips still could be on the cards.
We have visited 42 new railways in 2017,still many more to go before we can say we have rode on them all.
We start this series with a visit to the Hythe Pier Railway a Narrow gauge three rail electric,very rare to see a narrow gauge electric.
We really enjoyed our stay riding the railway,watching the boats travelling along the Southampton Water in the sunshine.
