Bulgarian Mainline Steam - Sofia to Mezdra via the Scenic Iskar Gorge.
Day 2 of the 2014 Railway Touring Company Black Sea Express Tour of Bulgaria and Greece. Steam Locomotive 2-8-2 No. 01.23 (Winterthur 3593/1935) takes our train from Sofia to Mezdra through the scenic Iskar Gorge.
Gorna Oryahovitsa to Karnobat, the Asenovo Steam Reserve and a Sticky Turntable.
Day 4 of the 2014 Railway Touring Company Black Sea Express Tour of Bulgaria and Greece. Today includes several highlights starting with the famous steam loco reserve at Asenovo full of fascinating relics such as a steam snowplow and many massive steam locomotives. As we make our way to Schumen our two locomotives are worked hard lifting their train up the steepening grades, throwing smoke high into the sky with that awesome sound only hard working steam engines can generate. At Kaspichan our the locos are to be turned, but the turntable has to be coaxed into action, refusing to budge when the first loco is in place. After much movement, gesturing, pushing and pulling the first engine is turned to everyone's relief. The journey continues with one engine through rolling farmlands along the single track line to Komunari after which the landscape becomes more mountainous and we pass the famous “Wonderful Rocks” near Asparuhovo.
Steam along the scenic Gabrovo branch with - Henschel 4-8-2 No.03.12.
Day 3 of the 2014 Railway Touring Company Black Sea Express Tour of Bulgaria and Greece. Today we make a return trip from Gorna Orjahovitsa to Gabrovo along a highly scenic single track route with our second steam locomotive Henschel 4-8-2 No.03.12. Enjoy the ride with plenty of lineside action shots of our impressive steam loco. We finish the day with a visit the loco works at Gorna Orjahovitsa to see many unusual locomotives, DMU’s and EMU’s.
Steam on the Oberalp Pass - Part 3 - watch the driver & fireman at work
Ride through stunning Swiss scenery on the veranda of a vintage railway carriage with a grandstand view of life on the footplate. Our driver and fireman have their work cut out as they coax our feisty little engine up and over the legendary Oberalp Pass on a perfect day.

Cab View – Masterton to Wellington - Low Cost, GoPro Hero Action Camera
GoPro’s entry level Hero action camera is a bit like Marmite, in that people either love or hate the heavily distorted fish eye effect produced by this camera.
In this video we visit Wellington, New Zealand, served by one of the most scenic commuter rail networks in the world. The system has been upgraded with new Electric trains, track upgrades and the overhead wires have been extended as far as Waikanae on the North Island Main Trunk Railway. During the peak periods the electric and diesel trains are busy transporting commuters to and from work, outside the peaks these regular modern trains are a great way for tourists to explore the Wairarapa, Johnsonville and Kapiti Coast lines. Maybe catch a train to Featherston to visit the Fell Locomotive Museum and learn about the legendary Rimutaka incline, or take an evening train along the scenic Kapiti coast to Paekakariki at sunset, the Johnsonville line, once part of the original North Island Main Trunk railway is a steeply graded, twisting line that climbs high into the Wellington suburbs offering great views over the city before plunging into a series of short tunnels to emerge onto a precarious ledge cut into the steep sided valley (try to imagine massive steam locomotives struggling with heavy trains over this tortuous route before it was bypassed by a tunnel in 1937).
We join the driver of our the diesel locomotive for a trip over the Wairarapa line to Masterton, skirting Wellington harbour on a beautiful sunny day, before making our way up the Hutt valley, climbing into the surrounding hills to enter the 5.5 mile (8.8 km) tunnel beneath the Rimutaka mountains, emerging to a splendid vista over Wairarapa lake, before descending to the plains far below, continuing through fertile farmland and attractive settlements to Masterton.
I used 3 different action cameras to make sure I captured this memorable return journey between Wellington and Masterton. Originally I intended to use the footage from which ever camera gave the best result, but as it turned out even though the cameras filmed the same trip, the perspective from each was quite different, leading me to decide on uploading two outward and two return trips.
Ffestiniog Railway – Driver’s Eye View – Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog (Wales)
We start at the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestioniog – also known as “the town that roofed the world”. Loco No. 10 “Merddin Emrys” built in 1879 simmers at that platform end ready to haul the last train of the day on a glorious sunny evening. Our train traverses a narrow ledge cut into the hillside above the quarrymen’s cottages to Tanygrisiau, before passing the deep waters of Llyn Ystradau and plunging into the darkness of Moelwyn tunnel. The original track bed lies beneath the waters of Llyn Ystradau, today the line passes the lake on a new deviation between Tanygrisiau and Dduallt that includes a spiral formation allowing the new line to loose enough height to re-join the original route. Once again our little trains clings to the wooded slopes with occasional glimpses of the River Dwyryd far below, we pass the halfway point at Tan-y-Bwlch before we continue our steady descent to Penrhyn and Minffordd where we cross the Cambrian Coast Railway. Our descent continues to Boston Lodge works and onto the famed seawall to our destination at Porthmadog. I would like to offer my thanks to all the volunteers, staff and train crew for making my visit such a thoroughly enjoyable experience. For a map of the route please click on this link -
One question that has come up many times in the comments is Why doesn't the train leave the tracks when it passes through a switch set for the opposite track at 07:48 - it is not easy to explain, but I'll try -
The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly. The switch blades are held in place by a spring mechanism that allows them to be pushed over by the weight of a train passing through them, as this train is about to do. Once the train is clear they are automatically set to allow a train in the opposite direction to take the right hand track, thus making the passing loop automatic. The system works well so long as a train never reverses before clearing the switch as that will de-rail the train. The first time this system is seen in operation it looks wrong, but it is common practice on many lines where speed is low and costs need to be kept to a minimum.
Beddgelert Station (Welsh Highland Railway), North Wales, UK
Out in North Wales with my parents, was lucky to arrive at the station just in time to see the train to Porthmadog headed by a Beyer-Peacock steam engine built in 1958. After a few checks the train steams out. Note the beautiful REVO lamp posts on the station platform.
We were only here because our 5pm train on the Snowdon Mountain Railway had been cancelled due to high winds. I hope one day I will get to the top of Snowdon one way or another!
