Part 3 of Boat Tour through Central Saint Petersburg, Russia
While it may be better to book a boat trip in advance, especially in high season during the White Nights, it is normally quite possible to turn up at one of the moorings in the city center (where Nevsky Prospekt crosses the Fontanka River, the Griboedov Canal, or the Moika River; in the Mikhailovsky Garden; on the Admiralty or Palace Embankments; or around the Peter and Paul Fortress) and join a tour immediately, day or night (after midnight nearly all boats offer trips out into the Neva River to watch the bridges opening). Most trips will be conducted by a tour guide or accompanied with a recorded audio-guide. If you require an English-language guide, many companies offer the service, along with several other foreign languages, but you will need to book in advance.

Lustrations in Post-Communist States: Past, Present or Future.
PANEL DISCUSSION ON LUSTRATIONS in WASHINGTON D.C., USA
ASEEES Convention, November 18, 2016
Lustration is generally known as a legal process of public disclosure, vetting and exclusion from certain governmental and judicial offices of persons who served in or collaborated with secret services in the former Communist states. After the collapse of the Soviet rule lustration laws were implemented in many of the Central and Eastern European countries, however in Ukraine and Russia this painful but necessary process is yet to be done.

Grand Palace, St. Petersburg, Russia
The Peterhof Palace is a series of palaces and gardens located in Petergof, Saint Petersburg, Russia, commissioned by Peter the Great as a direct response to the Palace of Versailles by Louis XIV of France. Originally intended in 1709 for country habitation, Peter the Great sought to expand the property as a result of his visit to the French royal court in 1717, inspiring the nickname used by tourists The Russian Versailles In the period between 1714 and 1728, the architecture was designed by Domenico Trezzini, and the style he employed became the foundation for the Petrine Baroque style favored throughout Saint Petersburg. Also in 1714, Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond designed the gardens, likely chosen due to his previous collaborations with Versailles landscaper André Le Nôtre. Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli completed an expansion from 1747 to 1756 for Elizabeth of Russia. The palace-ensemble along with the city center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Escorial Palace, Spain: Philip I considers a plan to kidnap Elizabeth
Scene from the 1937 movie Fire Over England (92 min). (Storyline based on the novel Fire Over England by A. E. W. Mason.)
The film is a historical drama set during the reign of Elizabeth I (Flora Robson), focusing on the English defeat of the Spanish Armada, hence the title.
In 1588, relations between Spain and England are at the breaking point. With the support of Queen Elizabeth I, English sea raiders such as Sir Francis Drake regularly capture Spanish merchantmen bringing gold from the New World.
Elizabeth's chief advisors are the lord treasurer, Lord Burleigh (Morton Selten), and her longtime admirer, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (Leslie Banks). Burleigh's beautiful but featherbrained granddaughter Cynthia (Vivien Leigh) is one of Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting, and the ageing queen is plagued with jealousy of the girl's attractiveness and vitality.
In a sea battle between the Spanish, led by Don Miguel (Robert Rendel), and the English, led by his old friend Sir Richard Ingolby (Lyn Harding) the English are captured. Miguel arranges for Richard's son Michael (Laurence Olivier) to escape. Michael washes ashore on Miguel's estate, and his wounds are tended to by Miguel's daughter Elena (Tamara Desni), who quickly becomes enamoured of the handsome Englishman. As the months pass, Michael recovers and laments being apart from Cynthia, his sweetheart, but is nonetheless impressed by Elena's charms.
Miguel brings Michael the sad news that Sir Richard, his father, has been executed as a heretic – by being burned at the stake. The grieving Michael denounces his rescuers and flees to England in a small fishing boat. When he is granted an audience with the Queen he urges her to fight the Spanish menace by whatever means necessary, and swears undying loyalty to her. Elizabeth is flattered by the young man's fervent devotion and later has an opportunity to take advantage of his offer of service when Hillary Vane (James Mason), an Englishman spying for Spain, is killed before the names of his English co-conspirators can be uncovered.
Michael, disguised as Vane, goes to the court of King Philip II of Spain (Raymond Massey) to get the letters that will set into motion a plan to assassinate Elizabeth. At the palace Michael meets Elena. Her father has been killed by the English and she is now married to Don Pedro (Robert Newton), the palace governor. Elena keeps Michael's identity a secret as long as she can, but finally must tell her husband out of loyalty to him.
Philip sees through Michael's disguise and orders his arrest. Pedro helps him escape so that it will not be discovered that his wife aided a heretic. While Michael is returning home, the Spanish Armada sails against England and Elizabeth joins her army in Tilbury. Michael meets her there and reveals the names of the traitors. Elizabeth knights Michael and then confronts the six traitors and tells them to fulfil their plot and kill her. They are overwhelmed with shame and agree to go with Michael on a dangerous mission, using fire ships to make a night attack on the Armada, which is massed off the coast of England.
The mission is successful as Michael and his men set the Armada aflame and then safely return. Elizabeth allows Michael and Cynthia to be wed, and, after sadly ordering all mirrors to be removed from her rooms, greets her adoring subjects.

Adopt Russia - From Russia With Love
What we do : Quite simply, we help and guide you through the paperwork process of adopting a child / children from Russia. It can appear daunting, so to receive help, and explanations at key times from someone who has been through it can be invaluable.
Why we do it : This is the realisation that whilst there are a lot of agents / agencies and beaurocrats who will suggest they can help you, there are times when you will need to do things quickly and there are few mums who can be available all times, 7 days a week to help and talk through the process, procedure and expectations.
My aim is to help you to help reduce the number of orphans in Russia.
How we do it : Because I am a UK mum who has experienced at first hand the process and successfully adopted two girls from St Petersburg, you will receive my personal attention and 1:1 service 24/7 to ensure your adoption journey goes as smoothly as possible and you achieve your goal of adopting from Russia. You are never just a number with me as I will only work with a maximum of a dozen people a year.
In terms of experience, our partner in Russia has placed every second child adopted in the UK and Ireland since 1995.

Dzerzhinsk, the dirtiest Russian city - From Moscow to Murmansk
Dzerzhinsk is one of the 10 most dirty cities in the world. Jelle speaks with the inhabitants that claim they can guess at which tram stop they are just by smelling it.

In this second series: From Moscow to Murmansk, he travels from North to South along the largest river of Russia: the Volga River. A trip along the relatively unknown cities like Murmansk, Volgograd, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, but also to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Russia: Customs canines sniff out the big bucks leaving Russia illegally
Russia's Federal Customs Service showed off their new methodology for training dogs to find large sums of cash in the bags of passengers who fail to declare the money at customs.
Video released from Moscow on Thursday shows a test demonstration in which a sniffer dog finds a large sum of cash in a bag. The officer then asked the volunteer to open the bag and show that the canine had successfully located a large wad of notes.
SOT, Oleg Khromov, Chief State Customs Inspector, Dog Division, Sheremetyevo Airport Customs (Russian): The larger the sum [of money] the better the scent is and it attracts her more.
SOT, Elena Ladozhina, Deputy Head, Federal Customs Service's Currency Control Department, (Russian): The purely illegal withdrawal of capital from Russia does happen and it is no longer a secret for anybody. It is done by companies which have proof of one-day registration, that is companies which do not have any real financial or economic business but which are deliberately created for grey and shady operations.

Protest against St Petersburg cathedral handover
(12 Jan 2017) In the latest scandal involving the powerful Russian Orthodox Church, authorities in St. Petersburg on Thursday defended a controversial decision to give a city landmark cathedral to the church.
Museum experts and locals in Russia's former imperial capital were rattled by the governor's announcement this week that he was transferring St. Isaac's Cathedral to the church.
An online petition against the decision had tens of thousands of signatures by Thursday.
The neoclassical church, completed in the 19th century, has been an important museum since Russia's 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and is now the city's third most visited site.
Some museum experts are concerned that the Orthodox Church will neglect its exhibits, which include a rare Foucault pendulum.
Mikhail Mokretsov, deputy governor of Russia's second-largest city, on Thursday vowed that the city hall will make sure that tourists get unfettered access to the site.
He said the city will retain its ownership of the cathedral and will shoulder maintenance costs while the church will get operational rights.
The Church says that visitors will not even notice the difference when the church begins to operate St. Isaac's.
But opposition St. Petersburg legislative council deputy Boris Vishnevsky said the move meant taxpayers were forking out for the Russian Orthodox Church to take 'donations', that were in turn tax-free.
Why do they have to pay for the maintenance of a cathedral which will belong to the Russian Orthodox Church?, he said.
Although St. Isaac's was built as an Orthodox cathedral, it has always owned by the government except for a brief period.
Opposition lawmakers and activists plan to protest on Friday against the decision, which they see as part of a growing trend toward social conservatism in Russia.
The Russian Orthodox Church has played an active part in President Vladimir Putin's efforts to consolidate Russian society by appealing to traditional values as opposed to Western liberalism.
The church's attempts to expand its influence have sometimes caused controversy, however.
On Wednesday, a senior Orthodox cleric in Siberia, the Metropolitan of Novosibirsk, Tikhon, lashed out at the local opera and ballet theatre for staging the classic Christmas ballet, The Nutcracker, which he insisted was based on an occult subject.
In 2015, Tikhon protested against Wagner's opera Tannhauser.
Several months later the Russian culture minister fired the theatre's director and the opera was removed from the theatre's repertoire.
