Elephant Conservation Center - Laos - Bua Banh's abscess
Support us by donating on the link below!
A few months ago we asked you to help us bring Bua Banh, an injured male, to the center. Because of all of your support, we were able to keep him and start a reproduction program with two of our females.
After awhile, he started to develop an abscess on his good hind leg. An elephant abscess can be very firm, and sometimes they rupture on their own, but because of the location this wasn’t the case. We had to open it ourselves in order to drain it. The veterinarian has undertaken several interventions (haematology, histopathology, cleaning and draining of the abscess and medications) and he is still undergoing daily treatment at the hospital. His blood values have improved, and shows normal behavior again. We are still working on the source of the infection.
You can see the current daily treatment of Bua Banh and the explanations provided by the hospital team, by looking at this movie.

Elephant Conservation Center Laos - Hospital - Treatment of an abscess
As part of our breeding program, we regularly host male elephants. When we welcomed Khampten to the center, he had an abscess on his left front leg.
Before introducing him to the rest of the herd, our team first treated him at the hospital.

Elephant Conservation Center Sayaboury Laos

Elephant breeding at the Elephant Conservation Center, Sayaboury, Laos
Today we would like to share some exceptional images that were made by visitors of the Elephant Conservation Center, Sayaboury, Laos.
The ECC has set up a breeding program which is unique to Laos. The females are put together with a bull in their natural environment. We do this often to make sure they can get used to his presence. Females are more likely to present themselves when they are in estrus if they have been exposed to males often.
In the video below, you can see an attempt of Khamtem to mount Mae Khian. Unfortunately, there was no penetration, but it is still good news that she feels comfortable letting him do this. Luckily, when there were no cameras he was more successful.
In order to be sure that the females don't get hurt by the bull, we tie a long chain to his front leg, which is not attached. In case he does start to act difficult, the mahout can tie him down, and the females can seek refuge.
You will notice the two other females walk back while the two others are occupied. When they have finished, they come closer to inspect not only the female, but the male too. This shows how comfortable they are with each other.
Elephants that are born at the center will not be used to work or perform shows. If we wish to save the wild elephant population, we need a healthy captive population which can be reintroduced in to the wild after careful planning. This is one of the main goals of the ECC.
Images like these can only be made if we let the elephants behave naturally, and we stay out of their way. The large area with observation platforms we have at the ECC offers a unique opportunity to witness situations like this.

Elephant tracking in Nam Pouy National Protected Area by the ECC team

I was so excited to see, touch and feed an elephant up close… but in reality it was so different… the elephant approached me naturally with no fear as though I was one of them...maybe I was?
It was a deeply satisfying and enjoyable Elephant Encounter with Mandalao Tours in Luang Prabang, Laos.
