ABOUT ELEPHANT FALLS
Elephant Falls was the British name of what the local Khasi people once referred to as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew or Three Steps Waterfallssince the falls actually consisted of three sections in succession. We learned from a sign here that the British renamed the falls because there used to be a rock resembling an elephant near the left side of the main falls. However, that rock was destroyed in an earthquake back in 1897.
Of the three waterfalls. The walking path gently descended from the entrance, and I recalled it was practically almost completely paved with lots of stairs and a bridge traversing the stream between the 2nd and 3rd falls.
Then after descending the last flight of steps alongside the third waterfall, there was a shelter and a little bit of a platform for photo taking while a rope was put beyond the platform to discourage swimming. The photo taken at the top of this page was between the last of the steps and the viewing platform at the base of Elephant Falls.

Elephant Falls // Shillong // Meghalaya Tourism Video (VLOG)
Hyy Guys,
Named after an Elephant like stone at its foot, the Elephant Falls are amongst the most popular falls in the North-East, situated next to Shillong. It is a tourists' paradise with three layers of the falls accessible to the layman from different vantage points. The Britishers named this fall so owing to the presence of an elephant-shaped rock on one side of the fall. However, the stone disintegrated and was washed away due to an earthquake in 1897. At Elephant Falls one can get very close to the falls and enjoy its serenity and might. This is also a superb place for spending some time in the midst of nature while capturing the incredible moments for your keepsake.
These breathtaking falls were referred to as 'Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew' by the local Khasi people, which means 'The Three Step Waterfalls', as these falls consist of three mesmerising falls in succession. The first of the three waterfalls are tucked between the dense trees and are very broad. The second waterfall reduces to thin strands of water and is almost negligible in winters due to the receding water levels. The third and the most visible waterfall is the tallest with clear water flowing like a sheet of milk on the dark rocks in the backdrop. Out of the three, the third waterfall tends to strike the visitors as the most impressive.
Elephant Falls is a great stopover destination before one head for further journeys into Meghalaya. Located 12 km away from the capital city of Shillong, it is one of the most visited falls in the beautiful state.

Elephant Falls are perhaps the most popular tourist destination in Shillong.
The first thing that you will witness after reaching the spot is the foaming white water, gurgling down the stony steps.
This crystal clear water is in contrast with the greenery on the sides of the waterfall, adding to the beauty of the place.
Renamed as Elephant Falls by the British, who found it difficult to pronounce the local name, the waterfall is believed to have gotten its name from a huge elephant-shaped rock near it.
Though the rock was destroyed in an earthquake in 1897, the name remained.
Make the best use of this waterfall and shed your inhibitions to take a dip in cold, clear water.

Elephant Falls, East Khasi Hills District in Shillong, Meghalaya. Elephant Falls is located about 12km from the busy city of Shillong. Elephant Falls | Shillong Peak | Bike Ride | Shillong | Northeast India
Shillong is the capital and hill station of Meghalaya, also known as The Abode of Clouds, one of the smallest states in India. It is the headquarters of the East Khasi Hills district and is situated at an average altitude of 4,908 feet (1,496 m) above sea level, with the highest point being Shillong Peak at 6,449 feet (1,966 m). It is said that the rolling hills around the town reminded the European settlers of Scotland. Hence, they would also refer to it as the Scotland of the East.
Elephant Falls: 12 km on the outskirts of the city, the mountain stream descends through two successive falls set in dells of fern covered rocks.
Shillong Peak: A picnic spot, 10 km from the city, 1965 m above sea level, offers a panoramic view of the scenic countryside and is the highest point in the state.
