We made it to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Sri Lanka to be precise the Elephant Freedom Project. The projects has one elephant that is being saved from mistreatment in one of the several elephant riding places in Pinnawala. We really had a great time with the elephant called Nilame.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage Sri lanka The Best Place In The World To See Wild Asian Elephants
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence Kandy. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department in a 25 acre coconut property adjoining the Maha Oya River. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungles of Sri Lanka.
In 1978 the orphanage was taken over by the National Zoological Gardens from the Department of Wildlife. A captive breeding program was launched in 1982. Since the inception of the program over 20 elephants have been bred here. The aim of the orphanage is to simulate a natural habitat to these elephants. However, there are some exceptions: the elephants are taken to the river twice a day for a bath, and all the babies less than three years of age are still bottle fed by the mahouts and volunteers.
Each animal is also given around 76 kg of green matter a day and around 2 kg from a food bag containing rice bran and maize. The orphanage which boasts to have the largest herd of captive elephants in the world is very popular and visited daily by many Sri Lankan and foreign tourists. The main attraction is clearly to observe the elephants bathing which is quite a spectacle.

Pinnawala (Pinnawela) Elephant Orphanage is located in the village Pinnawala in the district of Kegalle at a distance of 90km from Colombo.
Reaching Pinnawala (Pinnawela) Elephant Orphanage
Pinnawala (Pinnawela) Elephant Orphanage can be reached via the A1 Colombo – Kandy main road. A turn off at the 82 km post at Kegalle leads you to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The closest railway station is at Rambukkana 2km away from the village of Pinnawala.
History of the Pinnawala (Pinnawela) Elephant Orphanage
In the very beginning, in 1972, the orphanage was located at the Wilpattu National Park. Subsequently the orphanage was shifted to the National Holiday Resort at Bentota Beach in the south-western coastal belt and then to the Dehiwala Zoo, 11km south of Colombo. In the year 1975, the Department of Wildlife of Sri Lanka set up its present home: Pinnawala (Pinnawela) Elephant Orphanage at Pinnawala, Kegalle. Since then it never turned back on an orphaned elephant: it welcomed all and expanded from 4 orphaned elephants to a gang of no less than 109.
The purpose of Pinnawala (Pinnawela) Elephant Orphanage
The primary purpose of the orphanage has been to provide a lifeline to the orphaned baby elephants and adult elephants lost in the wilderness. In many occasions the mother of the orphaned baby elephant had been killed or there have been accidents of baby elephants falling into pits and losing out to the herd. There were also instances the mother elephant had fallen into a pit and died leaving the baby elephant lost in the jungle. There are instances of adult elephants being killed by farmers to protect their paddy fields and crops resulting in baby elephants being orphaned.
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was launched to provide the best possible opportunity to the sad victims of such situations. Captive breeding at Pinnawala (Pinnawela) Elephant Orphanage
The elephants at the Orphanage aren’t subjected to any form of stress, abuse or threat at all and are supported by a team of employees numbering to over 100 including a group of mahouts.
The free movement of the herd within the enclosed land of the orphanage affords the elephants opportunities to mate. In 1984, the first baby elephant of Pinnawela was born. Today some of these orphans enjoy the good fortune of seeing their third generation too born at the orphanage.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 89 males and 51 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.
The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to many of the orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC).

Elephant freedom project SCAM - tricks and lies
This is a very short summary of our BAD experience at Elephant Freedom Project (volunteersatwork.org) see the description for more detailed explanation.
tl;dr; - avoid this place and better go to national park if you want to see elephants that are actually free. You won't be able to see or experience anything like in this video that they advertise: (seems that they already taken down the video)
1. Because of some issues with bringing an elephant to their place they took us see how paper is made out of elephant poop - what we actually saw was a very well rehearsed scenario which followed by the stop in their shop so we would buy what they produce, just don't see anything in common to elephants and their freedom and how that servers elephants for better
2. We were also asked to prepare food for elephants - this was some kind of joke that none of us understood - slice half of pumpkin and one cabbage, like it has anything to do with the food preparation for elephants. Probably the idea is to provide of voluntary experience but the result is touristy at very least.
3. Just to get an idea of how much food we prepared -
4. - this is where we first met elephant - some place on the public street, she was just taken from her owner probably
5. - probably one of very few things that elephant did on her own, without any commands, doing what she actually wants (that's what I would call freedom). As soon as she starts eating leafs mahout yells at her and she probably starts peeing from fear
6. - this is how walk with the elephant looks like - she was guided in some random place further from main street. We were standing there for about an hour and watching the daily walk ritual... compared to other things I think this was also nice thing for her because she was able to scratch her along the tree and such but still it felt like a zoo parody and nothing freedomish about it...
7. - she was commanded to go into place so we could feed the food that we prepared
8. - lead by mahout with pole & hook present at all times, so she doesn't forget and is aware of it at all times
9. - mahout sitting on her head (no respect)
10. - mahout leaning on the elephant (no respect)
11. - mahout commanding her to to get up, later guiding her with the stick by hitting her with the hook to turn around and lastly giving command to lie down again. Please notice that she lies again on the same side as she was lying before - this is after we scrubbed her side. When we asked if we shouldn't be scrubbing the other side now so that she is clean, we got answer that it is ok, she will be scrubbed another day and we can continue scrubbing her side that we already scrubbed. I don't know what else if not parody this could be called...
12. - she is given command once again to get up. She doesn't listen the first time, so the command is repeated, later mahout comes closer and repeats command one more time. She is stopped midway getting up so we - tourists could scrub her other side... Everyone could see how uncomfortable she was in that position.
Unfortunately I didn't take video of how we were cleaning elephant enclosures - we were asked to move poop and dried leafs from one pile to another without clear explanation of the reasons to do that at all, that just felt that we were doing that just so we could pretend that we actually did something good...
Also I don't have videos of our last walk with elephant - after her bath in the river we were going on the main street when suddenly made a turn at a random intersection and ended up in a random place (probably guides didn't bother to spend more time walking in some better place?)
All in all we really regret that we had all this experience, we wanted to actually be helpful to people who are doing something good for elephants and we actually ended up in the place that pretends to do so.
We don't see how this place is any different from other elephant places apart from the fact that they don't offer to ride on the elephants.
I hope people in the future will find this video helpful and will avoid supporting such scam as Elephant freedom project.
If you really want to see elephants free and happy I would strongly advise to visit one of national parks where you can see hundreds of elephants who are in fact FREE and can do whatever they want.

Elephant Ride in Sri Lanka
Elephant riding is a must do in Sri Lanka. There are a lot of places where you can do it and the prices vary. Our driver stopped off at a place on the way to the Elephant Orphanage. It was a private farm with a quite a few elephants and a big piece of land. We paid 4k to 5k Rupees for a 45 minute excursion that included washing the elephant and riding the elephant. These places are well organized since they provide both an elephant handler and an English speaking guide that helps to take pictures and videos.
