Elephant (almost) rescue - Mae Taeng, Thailand, Feruary 2015
We drove 4 hours from Elephant Nature Park to a tiny village in Mae Taeng to rescue this sweet old girl only to be unable as her paperwork was potentially forged. ENP cannot take the risk, so we had to leave her there, shackled and hungry, which will be one of the saddest days of my life.
NEVER ride elephants. Never support the use of elephants, or any animal for that matter, as profitable entertainment.
Visiting Elephant Nature Park | Mae Taeng District | Chiang Mai Province | Thailand 2015
Elephant Nature Park is a sanctuary and rescue centre for elephants in Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai Province, Northern Thailand, approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Chiang Mai City. Founded in 1996, the project's aim is to provide sanctuary for distressed elephants from all over Thailand. ELEPHANT NATURE PARK | Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand
Recently we were privileged enough to visit the Elephant Nature Park rescue and rehabilitation center nestled 60 kilometers away from Chiang Mai City on a spacious 250-acre sanctuary in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. Typically tourists in Thailand interact with elephants by riding them and/or watching them perform in a show; however, the Elephant Nature Park provides an alternative way to visit with elephants in a natural setting (natural valley with a river surrounded by a forested mountain) where the elephants are NOT working for your Baht.

Visionary founder, Sangduen Lek Chailert, grew up in Northern Thailand interacting and caring for elephants in her youth. The park (Elephant Nature Park) she founded in the mid 90's has provided a sanctuary for elephants to live in a peaceful natural environment with a focus on rescuing elephants that have been abused, disabled and orphaned from the begging, logging and tourism industries.
With a specific emphasis on rescue and conservation as opposed to training, riding and elephant shows, the park allows visitors to feed, bathe, pet and learn the personal history and (often) tragic stories behind the individual elephants that together number 37 in the park (32 females and 5 males). Aside from elephants the park is also home to over 400 dogs, 50 water buffalo, 30 cats, horses, pigs, macaques and cows.
The highlight for us was having the opportunity to bathe and feed the elephants in a natural river setting. Having witnessed elephants engaged in the tourism industry it was the first opportunity I've had to spend time with elephants in a natural setting with no expectations placed on these majestic creatures to carrying hoards of tourists and/or perform ridiculous stunts.
Learning more about the rights of elephants, in which they are considered mere livestock by the Thai government, it was disheartening to hear about how they're abused, forced away from the care of their mother at an early age and basically groomed and dispirited to entertain 'farang' (Thai for foreigner) who visit Thailand. Armed with this knowledge I'll never again support tourism that involves Elephant mistreatment in any way, shape or form.
Visiting the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand was an eye opening and educational experience that had a life changing impact upon me. Please enjoy the video above (our experience at the ENP) and check back soon for a photo essay and story from our time spent at this wonderful sanctuary.
Today we're taking a fun little day trip outside of Chiang Mai. We are visiting the Elephant Nature Park, which is about sixty kilometers outside of the city. This is an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center, so we're going to be showing you around.
This center is also a refuge for a number of injured and abandoned animals such as dogs, cats, water buffalo and others.
We have a bucket full of fresh fruit and on today's menu for the elephants are bananas and watermelons.
Hi Baby!
No bananas. Nope!
That was my first time touching an elephant and their skin is surprisingly course and hairy.
Right now the rescue center is home to thirty seven elephants. Thirty two of them are female and five of them are male. These are Asian elephants, which vary from the African elephant. The African elephant is actually a lot larger than the Asian elephant and they also have much bigger ears.
Overall, the experience at the Elephant Nature Park has been phenomenal. We've really enjoyed having an opportunity to feed, bathe and interact with all of the elephants. It is a great alternative to doing the trekking where you are just sitting on top of the elephant and they are working. This way you get to spend time with the elephant in its natural environment feeding it and just having a great time.

Elephant painting at the Elephant Life Experience (E. L. E.) in Thailand
At the Elephant Life Experience elephant preserve in Thailand, you can have an elephant paint a picture for you--and, as you will see in the video--even direct the elephant to paint and place the colors (on the brush that you dab in paint and hand the elephant, which he/she picks up with his trunk, one brush/one color at a time) on certain parts of the painting canvas. Here, I captured a short video of Dr. Izzy Ziv, (an orthopedic physician from Buffalo, N.Y.) one of the 19 members of my photography-based tour group/trek in Thailand (organized by Michelle Cast of the MentorSeries.com) actually directing an elephant in the painting of a flower (and hugging the elephant's trunk in appreciation of its artistic skill!) . The Elephant Life Experience preserve is located 68 kilometers from Chiang Mai in the North of Thailand. The elephant is the national animal of Thailand. I also had my own elephant paint a flower for me at the E.L.E. and wish that I had a video of the experience!
Elephants & Trekking in Mae Taeng - Thailand #2
Tog på en lille 3-dages tur rundt i bakkerne nord for Chiang Mai. Lidt lokal kultur, close encounters med elefanter og ikke mindst den mildeste form for river rafting der nok lovligt kan kaldes river rafting.

Mae Ping Elephant Camp Thailand
In Thailand at Chiang Mai we took an elepahnt ride for 1 hour, then rode an oxcart, and ended our touring on a river raft down the Ping River. Here is a video clip while we were riding the elephant... you will definitely feel the up and down of the elephant as he takes us up and down thru the river as well as on narrow trails on the mountain side. This was truly a once in a life time experience!
My AMAZING Day with Elephants in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Spending the day with elephants in Thailand is something I've always dreamed of! This was a huge bucket list check for me, so I hope you enjoy this video of my day spend at the Elephant Life Experience E.L.E. just north of Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Elephant Life Experience is the only boutique experience where you spend the day exclusively with the elephants and not in a large group. They plan the whole day amazingly for you. Here is how it breaks down:
When you arrive you are greeted by the wonderful staff and two elephants that you meet and feed right away. It is so fun!
Then you have welcome tea in the main lodge and change into your mahout outfit which you can take home.
Next you meet all of the elephants and their mahouts (keeper).
Now the fun really begins! You learn basic commands and ride on of the elephants bareback. And of course you treat them with sugar cane.
Next you experience the elephants artistic skill and watch and participate as the elephant paints a picture for you to take home.
Then you go elephant trekking on a gorgeous trail.
Next (my favorite part) you bathe the elephants in the river and take a fun group picture.
Finally you have a picnic lunch basket from the Four Seasons Resort Chaing Mai before rafting along Mae Taeng River (about 30 minutes). There you arrive at E.L.E's private pier and head back by car to Chiang Mai.

Elephants in Chiang Mai Thailand.
This is just a quick look at our elephant experience outside of the city of Chiang Mai.
Elephant Nature Park of Thailand
Elephants are sometimes mistreated in Thailand and elsewhere when they are trained to work for humans. As a result there are quite a few sick and injured elephants who are still very expensive to feed and maintain. One woman, Lek Chailert from northern Thailand's Chiang Mai province, opened a sanctuary where she provides a home for distressed elephants,
This video comes from a visit to Elephant Nature Park where I recorded how the rescued animals can now live in freedom and dignity. This animal sanctuary provides opportunities for volunteers to embark on a real Thailand adventure by working directly with the elephants.
This is one place which you will never forget after your Thailand travel. For many volunteers this is the adventure of a life time. It is a vacation with purpose and the opportunity to learn first hand how those magnificent animals live.
If you are not planning on a Thailand vacation, then this video will show you one of many fascinating aspects of this country.

Responsible Tourism: Don’t Ride Elephants in Thailand | Come Here To Feed, Wash And Play!
An elephants average life expectancy is 80 years old but with proper care they can live up to 100 years old. For a long time in Thailand people used elephants for manual labor work. They were mostly chained, whipped and beaten.
Now there are more and more sanctuaries that are doing everything they can to teach and encourage people to save them from extinction. There are no chains, no riding and no poaching.
At Elephant Jungle Sanctuary we were able to learn about these majestic creatures. We had the most amazing experience feeding them a lot of bananas and taking mud baths and showering with them.
It’s remarkable the things we witnessed. We hope that this message spreads and that we can as a community support sanctuaries in continuing their work in taking care of elephants instead of using them for profit.

One Day Elephant Experience in Chiang Mai - No Riding - Chiang Mai Elephant Home
Thank you @Jorien Tilstra for this beautiful video.
Check out her Vlog for full video.
We happy to share this experience with you and thank you for visiting us and helping us take care and feed the elephants.
Chiangmai Elephant Home is an ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project, located in a village surrounded by mountains and a national park nearby. We have talked with the elephant carers (Mahout) and invited them to join our project. Our special project purpose to take the chain and saddle off of the elephants, like some projects of Elephants nature park. They are our inspiration. All elephants care takers and owner agree to take a saddle off which is a good sign and good start for the elephant welfare here. No more being ridden and treat them with respect. We try to do all the best we can for the elephants, elephants care takers, elephants owner and community here.
Therefore we do not agree in ELEPHANT RIDING and ELEPHANT PERFORMANCES. In contrast visitors can observe or participate with the elephants in nature. Even more better that you can walk, feed, bath and play with them close up.
We aim to provide a better life for the elephants. By providing them a safe, loving and secure environment for them to roam free in a natural environment. Moreover we build trust and love between the elephants and humans by showing the love, respect and care in different way. We provide enough food for them each day. Besides that we also plant banana, corn, hay etc., our agricultural products are bought from the local community. We work hard to get a balance offering a worthy experience to our visitors. And sharing our love for the elephants, elephant care takers, environment and community.

Elephants Sanctuary - Thailand
[SPANISH AND FRENCH BELOW]
As animal lovers, we decided to volunteer in an elephants sanctuary in Thailand. Elephants World sanctuary, based in West province Kanchanaburi, is one among others doing a great job! Most of the elephants were rescued from trekking or logging industries where they were constantly abused. Now, each of them has a mahout (elephant trainer/keeper/healer) to take care of them and they run free in this huge complex with everything they need. If you want to see elephants, the best for them is doing it this way. PLEASE, DON'T RIDE ELEPHANTS.
NO MONTES ELEFANTES.

BMP (Jungle Trek) Elephants and Rafting - Thailand
The last day of our three day trek through the jungles of Chiang Mai, Thailand included riding Elephants and going on a bamboo raft down a river.
That morning we hiked the last stretch from our campsite to the truck- which we all piled into and were taken to the elephants. We had the guides remove the baskets from the elephants backs and the video shows a summary of the rest.
After we all returned from our ride through the Thai Jungle, we were taken to where we started our bamboo rafting experience. It was a great way to relax and cool off after 2 1/2 days hiking through the mountainous jungle of Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Elephant Nature Park is an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center in Northern Thailand where you can volunteer and visit to help. We have been involved in dozens of rescues to create our thriving elephant herd.
The park provides a natural environment for elephants and other animals under our care. Volunteers and visitors contribute to the healing while learning about their lives past and present.
Elephant Nature Park is a unique project set in Chiang Mai province, Northern Thailand. Established in the 1990's our aim has always been to provide a sanctuary and rescue centre for elephants. The park is located some 60km from the city, and has provided a sanctuary for dozens if distressed elephants from all over Thailand.
