The Elephant Rock ☆ Al Ula, Madinah, Saudi Arabia
The journey from our accommodation to the elephant rock. The one thing we wanted to do is to catch the sunrise but unfortunately we were locked in the compound so never got to see the rock during that time. However, to boost our mood we decided to take a ride there anyways. This is our journey.

Winter at Tantora | Elephant Rock | Al-Ua, Saudi Arabia
Mada'in Saleh 2013-0039
Mada'in Saleh
is one of the best known archaeological sites in Saudi Arabia,
located in Al Ula (previously known as Dedan),
some 400 kilometers north of Al Madinah.
Mada'in Saleh was once inhabited by the Nabataeans some 2000 years ago,
Petra (located in Jordan) being the capital of the Nabataean kingdom.
The Nabataeans are of Arab origin who became rich
by their monopoly on the trade of incense and spices
in particular between the East and the Roman, Greek and Egyptian empires.
Mada'in Saleh has about 130 dwellings and tombs that extend over some 13 kilometers.
Experience AlUla
We invite you to experience AlUla, Saudi Arabia and journey through a living museum of preserved tombs, historic dwellings and monuments, both natural and man-made, that hold 200,000 years of largely unexplored human history.
Back to Al-Ula, Saudi Arabia || Lunch between the Rocks || Winter at Tantora - part 1
Al-Ula county, located 300km north of Medina, is a place of extraordinary human and natural heritage. The Wadi Al-Qura (the Valley of Villages), a lush oasis valley that runs through Al-Ula, sheltered by sandstone mountains, created a perfect environment for civilisations to flourish. The Dedanites, Lihyanites and Nabataeans all built cities here.
The Al-Ula region is a natural crossroads and was an important trading route used from at least the first millennium BC. Positioned on the ancient Incense Route between Southern Arabia and Egypt, Al-Ula became a hub of commercial and cultural exchange, its cities and oases important stopping-points for traders of frankincense, myrrh and other precious commodities.
Tantora is a sundial located in Al-Ula’s Old Town. It has been used by the local population for hundreds of years as a marker for the start of the winter planting season, mostly for seed crops such as grains. It is a triangular feature, constructed as the upper part of a wall.
Tantora has, over time, become the focal point of an annual festival marking the start of the winter season. On December 22nd at noon, the shadow from the sundial reaches a stone on the ground in the courtyard marking the first day of a 40-day period of winter planting.
In the past, loose stones were placed by the mu'allim in different spots on a daily basis to tell time, in order to distribute water equitably to farms of the tid'il qanat neighborhood.
We were excited to go back to this magnificent place of the planet. Actually, we feel as we are in a different plant in this region. The atmosphere is like no other making it so hard to describe.
Having lunch between the rocks was part of our Gold Subscription for Andrea Bocelli' s Concert. Having lunch in such untraditidal way was totally unexpected and turned to be the best lunch we ever had in our life. The original place of the Japanese Restaurant is located in Jeddah and they managed to host this event in such a wonderful way. The dishes was extremly delicious and well presented followed by life Arabic music.
If we didn't have to go to the concert we could've stay in this place for hours...!
Thank you for watching and being part of our journey!
