ABOUT VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK NEAR LAS VEGAS NEVADA

Valley of Fire is located in the Mojave Desert approximately 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The oldest Nevada State Park, dedicated in 1935, covers an area of approximately 35,000 acres. Valley of Fire was named for the magnificent red sandstone formations that were formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of the dinosaurs more than 150 million years ago (Mesozoic Era). These brilliant sandstone formations appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun’s rays. Other important rock formations include limestone, shale, and conglomerates.

That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!

Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest state park in Nevada, USA and was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968. It covers an area of almost 42,000 acres (17,000 ha) and was dedicated in 1935. It derives its name from red sandstone formations, the Aztec Sandstone, which formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays.
Valley of Fire is located 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Las Vegas, at an elevation between 2,000–2,600 feet (610–790 m). It abuts the Lake Mead National Recreation Area on the east at the Virgin River confluence. It lies in a 4 by 6 mi (6.4 by 9.7 km) basin.

Valley of Fire is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, dedicated in 1935. Ancient trees and early man are represented throughout the park by areas of petrified wood and 3,000 year-old Indian petroglyphs. Popular activities include camping, hiking, picnicking and photography. The park offers a full-scale visitor center with extensive interpretive displays. Several group use areas are also available. The park is open all year. Valley of Fire State Park is six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75.

Idaho William explores the beautiful City of Rocks National Reserve near Almo, Idaho in Cassia County. He learns about the different rocks like Camp Rock, Register Rock, Treasure Rock, Bath Rock, Elephant Rock, Morning Glory, and Anteater. He sees rock climbers, and also will talk about the California Trail and emigrant signatures on the rocks.
