The Garden Route Coast - Plettenberg Bay and Natures Valley
Pretty much every place Bevan and I have been priviledged to visit on the Ultimate South African Road Trip has been worthy of more time than we had to explore it. If we had given in at every spot though, we would be looking at a few extra years on the road! We made the exception for Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route however, and spent a leisurely week exploring its surrounds.
This gem on the Garden Route is instantly recognisable. The iconic Robberg headland defines the bay, with the Beacon Isle Hotel taking up a prime beachfront position. Mountains ring the bay, and the sunset is reflected in a million hues of pinks and purples in the meandering waterways of the Keurbooms River and Estuary. Scenery like this takes my breath away every time I see it, and the one reason I’d choose not to live here is for the risk of taking all of this for granted.

Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre in The Crage on the Garden Route of South Africa
Via In 2001 founders Len and Mandy Freeman bought an undeveloped 46 ha piece of land in the Crags, on the Garden Route of South Africa. They started out with one little hut on the property, taking in their first injured and problem animals and nursing them back to health. Their ability to heal and rehabilitate animals quickly became known and before long they were receiving injured wild animals of all kinds.
This lead to Tenikwa registering as a fully fledged rehabilitation centre with Cape Nature Conservation. Subsequently more animals including birds, penguins, bats as well as wild cats started ending up at Tenikwa. One of these species, the cararcal is particularly persecuted in South Africa, with numbers declining at a rapid rate. Len explains that it is due to ignorance that these cats get killed and that there are in fact many alternatives to killing.
SHOPS ON THE N2 TO PLETT- Day 4
14 August 2017- Day 4 We took a drive from Sedgefield through to Plett and explored the shops along the way back. Passing through Knysna on the way and seeing the damage that was left from the Knysna Fires earlier this year. It was sad to see the landscape that had once been lush with green trees to the now brown and blackened ones we saw.
