The Bica Funicular (Portuguese: Elevador da Bica or Ascensor da Bica) is a funicular in Lisbon, Portugal, that forms the connection between the Calçada do Combro/Rua do Loreto and the Rua de S. Paulo. It is operated by Carris.
The Bica funicular was opened on 28 June, 1892. It climbs the Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo for 245 metres from the Rua S. Paulo. The lower station of this funicular railroad is almost hidden behind a facade on the Rua de S. Paulo with the inscription Ascensor da Bica. It was constructed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard and opened to the public in 1892. In 2002 it was designated a National Monument.

De kabeltram is op 28 juni 1892 in bedrijf genomen. Het was een ontwerp van Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard en is sinds 19 februari 2002 een nationaal monument.

Bairro Alto & elevador da Bica (Lisboa)
Bairro Alto, outrora conhecido como Vila Nova dos Andrades, é uma zona típica de Lisboa de ruas estreitas e empedradas adjacentes às zonas do Carmo e do Chiado, com casas seculares e pequeno comércio tradicional. Construído mais ou menos em plano octogonal em finais do século XVI, o Bairro Alto é um dos mais pitorescos da cidade, sendo delimitado a oeste pela Rua do Século, a este pela Rua da Misericórdia, a norte pela Rua D. Pedro V e a sul pela Rua do Loreto e Largo do Calhariz. O Bairro Alto divide-se pela freguesia da Encarnação e de Santa Catarina.
Desde os anos 80 que é a zona mais conhecida da noite lisboeta, com inúmeros bares e restaurantes a par das casas de fado, local onde se situavam também quase todos os órgãos de imprensa de distribuição nacional. Nos últimos 20 anos adquiriu uma vida muito própria e característica, onde se cruzam diferentes gerações na procura de divertimento nocturno.
Parte dos prédios foram ou estão a ser recuperados, mantendo-se a traça original dos mesmos, o que veio permitir a instalação de novos e alternativos espaços comerciais, encontrando-se desde lojas multimarca e ateliers a lojas de tatuagens e piercing.
Aos poucos verifica-se também que passou a ser procurado como um lugar para viver, estando a sua população a ser renovada e rejuvenescida.
Durante o Século XIX e até ao terceiro quartel do Século XX, o bairro abrigava as sedes dos principais jornais e tipografias do país. Ainda hoje é possível encontrar ecos desse tempo em nomes de ruas como a Rua Diário de Notícias ou a Rua do Século. Este bairro, um dos mais intelectuais da capital, frequentado e habitado por jornalistas, escritores e estudantes, a um passo do Chiado, era também lugar de tascas de marinheiros, de lugares de má fama e de muita prostituição. Vitorino Nemésio faz alusões a este ambiente no romance Mau tempo no canal.
O edifício onde nasceu o Diário de Notícias foi mais tarde ocupado por A Capital (diário extinto em 2005), sendo hoje mais conhecido por «Edifício A Capital». Foi neste prédio que a companhia de teatro Artistas Unidos esteve sediada durante muito tempo. A companhia abandonou o espaço há alguns anos, uma vez que a Câmara Municipal vai proceder a obras de reabilitação.
Bairro Alto (literally upper quarter in Portuguese) is an area of central Lisbon, Portugal.
The first terrain division occurred around 1500, when the court of D.Manuel I moved from the castle to the royal palace in Terreiro do Paço. The need for housing led the king to force farmers to resign their lands.[1] Nowadays, it functions as a residential, shopping and entertainment district. Bairro Alto is one of the oldest districts of Lisbon. Dozens of fado singing clubs animated the area. All the major Portuguese newspapers had their offices in there. Prostitution was visible and considerable.
Since the 1990s, Bairro Alto went through major changes. Lisbon's city council made extensive repairs, and dozens of new restaurants, clubs and trendy shops were opened. Many young people moved into the area. Cars were banned (except for residents and emergency vehicles). Today, Bairro Alto (or just Bairro) is the heart of Lisbon's youth culture and nightlife. Lisbon's punk, gay, heavy metal music, goth, hip hop and reggae scenes all have the Bairro as their home, due to the number of clubs and bars dedicated to each of them. During daytime, the Bairro is a traditional district where older people shop for groceries, and the younger generations visit art galleries like Zé dos Bois, bookshops like Ler Devagar or arty gift shops like Hold Me.
Despite the heavy police presence, illegal drugs are sold in the streets.[2] In 1995, a group of far-right skinheads attacked and killed Alcino Monteiro, a Portuguese citizen of African origin.[3][4][5][6][7] This zone struggles with a problem of vandalism, with graffiti destroying historical buildings, such as the place of death of Fernando Pessoa and Almada Negreiros.

O Elevador da Bica, in Lisbon, runs daily through the steep of rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, since 1892, connecting the street of São Paulo to Calhariz.
This funicular, owned by Carris, created by the luso-french engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, was initially moved by a water balance system. In 1896, it began to steam, and a few decades later, electric power.
With more than a century of existence, classified as a National Monument since 2002, it is one of the most visited places in Lisbon due to its unique beauty and enormous importance in the history and culture of the city.
