STORYLINE:
Seventeen years after the revolution which saw the overthrow of communist rule, Romania was on Saturday preparing for another upheaval - entry into the European Union.
University Square in Bucharest - the focus of the 1989 revolution - is playing host to a special New Year Expo timed to coincide with Romania's official entry into the EU on January 1.
Ion Poescu, one of the Rom Expo organisers, explained what was happening.
Bucharest city hall is sponsoring a European party for six-thousand people and eleven-hundred retired people at the same time as Romania is joining the EU.
The Romanian President Traian Basescu has warned his country to prepare for change following its accession to the EU.
A period of integration will follow for Romania and its population and this will have serious economic consequences, socially speaking and especially in terms of changing mentality.
Romania and fellow former communist state Bulgaria will join the EU on New Year's day increasing the bloc to 27 countries in a year marking the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome that laid the groundwork for the modern EU.
The Romanian Revolution followed a week-long series of riots and fighting in December 1989.
It culminated in the overthrow of the Communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu.
Ceausescu and his wife Elena were executed after a summary trial.
Romania was the only Eastern Bloc country to violently overthrow its Communist regime or to execute its leaders.
