A part of the road to Elijio Panti National Park, Belize
On March 29, 2014, I went to Elijio Panti National Park with my two friends David Tzul and Antonio Mai, both from nearby San Antonio Village. It had been several years since I was there. I had been told the road to the park was too bad to drive in but Antonio knows the area very well and when I arrived at his house he said we could do it no problem. The road was quite rough in spots. It would not be possible in even a small or medium sized SUV let alone a two-wheel drive car. I was driving a 2013 Mitsubishi L200 4WD diesel pickup which had fairly good clearance but there were some deep ruts and big rocks on portions of the road. Driving required keeping the wheels on one side or the other in VERY specific places. If a wheel went into a rut or dropped off a large rock, we would not be going anywhere for a while. But with guidance from David and Antonio, we made it and had a great two days in the park.

A Day in San Antonio, Cayo
The San Antonio-Cayo fair has been celebrated since the early 1900s. Despite its long tradition, its vitality had waned a bit. To revitalize this important cultural event, we organised ‘A Day in San Antonio’ by connecting culture, nature, and sports. In 2018, we believe that the fair
cannot remain as “purely cultural”. While culture is fundamental to the vibrancy of our community, our care for our natural environment is key to sustain the services this provides. In this regard, we aimed to connect the importance of the Elijio Panti National Park (the Park) to the quality of life of the people of San Antonio. The Park provides water for our community, along with other services—services that need to be protected. Here's a recap of the event with special highlight on the Dr. Elijio Panti Cycle Race. Enjoy!

Did you know that most of the peanuts in the country come from the village of San Antonio? The village is rich in history and culture and organizers of Another Beautiful Day In San Antonio (ABDISA) hopes to bring awareness to this. ABDISA seeks to celebrate the Mayan village's identity by bringing hundreds of villagers and visitors to the village to experience a day filled with Maya traditions, food, dances, art and craft, games, educational booths, a football marathon, and a bicycle race (The Don Elijio Panti Cycling Race). We spoke with Delmer Tzib about the event and the cultural significance of the activities.

Hill Bank road encounter
March 13, 2014. I was driving north from Gallon Jug and Yalbac Ranch properties towards the Programme for Belize, Hill Bank Field Station to spend a few days filming there. Roads in the area, all one-lane, had only recently become at all passable due to a very long and intense rainy season in Belize. I had just encountered a small work crew with a grader and large dump truck, dumping and spreading gravel on bad parts of the road through the Hill Bank property. While waiting for some gravel to be graded and a way cleared to continue, I was warned by PfB Ranger Antonio Chiac that they were about done but there were still probably two more big dump trucks still on the road headed south, between me and my destination. Antonio advised extreme caution as those guys are crazy, they don't stop for anything. I proceeded north when possible. This is a short video on that experience...

Sastun: My Apprenticeship With A Maya Healer - PREVIEW
Purchase: Sastun tells the story of American herbalist Rosita Arvigo, whose quest to explore the healing powers of plants led her to the rain forest of Belize where she befriended one of the last remaining Maya shamans, Don Elijio Panti. While learning his secrets during her apprenticeship she unearthed her lifes work: to preserve Don Elijio's ancient healing knowledge and to bridge the gap between science and traditional healer's wisdom. Funded by the National Cancer Institute in New York, Rosita Arvigo is in a race against time, scouring the tropical rain-forests of Central America in search of cures for many deadly diseases like AIDS and Cancer, before they are wiped out by deforestation.
