Moravian Church of Elim, South Africa
Moravian missionaries from Herrnhut, Germany came to South Africa and founded the village of Elim in 1824 for the purpose of sharing the Gospel with the indigenous peoples and European settlers. The Moravians named their mission station after the desert oasis mentioned in Exodus 15:22 when the children of Israel camped there to be refreshed by its 70 palm trees and 12 springs. Pray that the seeds sown by these and countless other missionaries will bear much fruit throughout Africa! Glory to God!

Elim - oasis of dreams
Commissioned by the South African Air Force base in Bredasdorp to help raise money for the Elim Children's Home. Elim has a rich history and a unique story, the most southern Moravian Church settlement in Africa. The men of Elim are world renowned thatchers, working as far afield as England. The Children's Home is an extension of the community's philosophy to take care of the sick and destitute as their own. It was a moving experience. A worthwhile cause to support.
Produced, directed, shot and edited by Carel de Beer and assisted by André Swanepoel on camera and sound. This was the first documentary for both of us.

GENADENDAL: FROM DEGRADATION TO RESTORATION
While the need to preserve our cultural heritage is widely recognized, the availability of financial resources to do so is often deficient.
To alleviate the financial challenge of restoration/ conservation (for the the owner, the Moravian Church) the Genadendal Mission Museum, under the Chairmanship of the late Rev. Martin Wessels decided in 1987 on the initiative: 'Adopt the Heritage Site’ and spread awareness around about these monuments and their importance. The curator was given the task of public relations officer. Planning publicity strategies and campaigns. writing and producing presentations and press releases were not easy. State departments always told him that due to the country’s economic crisis, the budgetary allocations for culture in general and heritage conservation in particular had been reduced.
Though the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is the overseeing statutory organisation established under the National Heritage Resources Act, No 25 of 1999, as the national administrative body responsible for the protection of South Africa’s cultural heritage, no financial assistance to preserve the declared monuments at Genadendal were given.
To gain private funding sources was just as difficult, but with Solomon’s wisdom and God’s intervention the museum could find friends and financial institutions who bought the initiative, “Adopt a monument” and who were willing to assist us to ensure that our monuments are kept for posterity. The video declares who the benefactors were. However, it is also the responsibility of the owners to address at least the basic maintenance work on their restored buildings.
600th commemoration of Moravian Church father
The Moravian Church is commemoration the 600th anniversary on Monday of the death of its founding father, Jan Hus. The oldest Moravian mission village on the African continent can be found in the Western Cape. It's a historical little town called, Genadendal.

Whale Coast, South Africa | TRAVEL FILM
Approximately two and a half hours drive out of Cape Town, lies a region of such immense beauty that it attracts thousands of visitors a year - THE WHALE COAST! (Also known as The Cape Overberg region).
The entire coastline offers generous sightings of whales and comprises some of the most scenic and popular parts of South Africa. Including the meeting place of two oceans - the Indian and Atlantic.
This first episode features the picturesque QUOIN POINT!
A semi-hidden peninsula that lies between Danger Point and Cape Agulhas and the second most southern tip of the African continent. A beautiful empty sand beach stretches from the Buffeljags-settlement to Quoin Point. Unsurprisingly, reaching the beach entails a 4X4 vehicle over rather rough terrain. Around it are a series of little cottages, owned by families who live in nearby Elim.
Despite the beauty on shore, the ocean around Quoin Point is the burial place of numerous ships and hundreds of sailors. Between Danger Point and Cape Infanta, about 140 shipwrecks are mapped. Most of these shipwrecks are centred around Quoin Point, Arniston and Agulhas.
The history of Quoin Point and its shipwrecks is closely connected to that of Elim, the Moravian mission village on the road between Baardskeerdersbos and Bredasdorp. Over the years, residents of Elim have often provided assistance to victims of shipwrecks. After people from Elim provided assistance at the wrecking of the Jessie in 1829 at Quoin Point, Queen Victoria granted the right to use the land at Quoin Point to residents, which insured that people would be present to assist shipwreck survivors at this treacherous point. Today there is still a small light-tower surrounded by some cottages owned by the Schipper- and October-families of Elim.
Originally, Quoin Point was named Ponta de sao Brandoa by Bartolomeu Diaz when he rounded Quoin Point in 1488 on the nameday of the Irish monk St. Brendanus.
Later the name changed to Quoin Point, but the locals call it Jessie se Punt (Jessie’s Point).
