Elliot's beach / Besant nagar beach, Thiruvanmiyur Beach, Chennai | Scenic beaches of Chennai
Besant Nagar is an affluent, residential neighborhood in South Chennai, India. It is located on the coast of the Elliot's Beach along the Bay of Bengal.
It is a part of Chennai which is inhabited by many famous personalities and affluent citizens. Alongside are many restaurants, cafes, shops and boutiques. The main attraction is the Elliot's Beach, named after Edward Elliot, Governor of Madras. It forms the end-point of the Marina Beach shore. It has the Annai Velankanni Church and the Ashtalakshmi Temple along the shore and is sometimes nicknamed 'Bessie'. In the colonial era it was a fairly exclusive place limited to expatriates.
The Besant Theosophical High School, The School (erstwhile KFI School - Krishnamoorthy Foundation of India), Olcott Memorial School, Arignar Anna Government High School are some of the other schools in Besant Nagar.
The beach and the 6th avenue are the venue for many events like the Vintage Car Rally, Half Marathons, the Army Band, Musical and Promotional events, Food Carnivals and many more.
The uniqueness of this place is that it is bound fully on the east by the Bay of Bengal ( Elliots Beach ), on the South by the Kalakshetra Campus, on the North by the Theosophical Society and its sprawling forested green campus ( with the Adyar Estuaries still further to its North) that except through the Besant Avenue in the North-West, the approach from Shastri nagar in the west as two points, there is no chance of any traffic congestion for many many decades to come. The only traffic that will come and go out of Besant Nagar will the ones used by the residents of the area themselves and the evening and week end traffic to the Sea-side.

We visited Elliot's beach at Besant nagar on a fine morning. Local people know this beach as just besant nagar beach. The name Elliot is not at all popular.
Some people feed to pigeons on about 6 to 6.30. You will feel better watching this.
And we noticed a weird crab catching practice by a local man.
Since it is morning the beach shops are closed.
Best time to visit this beach is morning 5.30 to 7.30 and evening 5 to 10 o'clock.

Karl Schmidt memorial on Elliot beach in Chennai
The Karl Schmidt Memorial is architectural landmark located at Elliot's beach in Chennai,Tamil Nadu,India.It was built in memory of a Dutch Sailor who drowned in 1930 to save the life of a girl.
According to historians,the Dutch Sailor who was strolling along the beach,saw an English girl sinking into water who soon started struggling.In a successful attempt to save the girl's life, Karl Schmidt lost his life. The English girl who Karl Schmidt rescued from the sea, attended a ball the following evening as though nothing had happened.Then British Governor was angry with her and decided to build a memorial to in commemoration of Dutch Sailors bravery.
The structure was built by Lieutenant-Colonel Sir George Frederick Stanley, then Governor of Madras, in honour of the bravery of Schmidt. According to experts, Memorial was built using bricks without proper stone foundation.The memorial is the only heritage structure on Elliots Beach. The Chennai Corporation has started the restoration of Schmidt Memorial.
As Elliot Beach is one of the tourist attractions of Chennai, the memorial is viewed by lots of tourists.

Elliot's Beach is one of the cleanest beaches in the city of Chennai. It is located towards the south of Marina Beach and was an extremely calm and tranquil place. As the beach does not offer much activity, it is ideal for long walks. Moreover, the ones who want to soak their feet in the splashing sea water and lose themselves completely in the arms of the nature, head on. Elliot's Beach is quite a hit amongst both the tourists as well as the natives of Tamil Nadu.
The Ashtalakshmi Temple is around 20 years old and has modern style architecture. It is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and appears different from the rest of the Temples in South India.

You already know its my Chennai Vlog Series and this was my day two when I switched my Hotel to a new location and went to explore the beach alone. It was really fun playing those games and the feel of waves was peaceful. I observed how everyone around me was happy in its own way, there were families, couples, solo travellers each on of them complimenting the vibes of the beach, would love to visit the place again when I'll have a good camera in day time.
