Newmarket is a town rich in Quaker history. You can start learning about its past by visiting the Elman W. Campbell Museum. After your visit, take a ten minute stroll down the hill to Water Street. See if you can spot some of the heritage plaques on buildings of historical and architectural interest.
Glancing downward, you will find many sidewalk markers along the route. These engraved stones tell the stories of many notable buildings on your walk. Find out where the famous department store owner, Robert Simpson, opened his first business. Discover the site of Newmarket's first hospital. See a list of the exact locations of the sidewalk markers and what is engraved on them.
Research your history project by reading a more detailed account of Newmarket's history. Discover the origin of many of Newmarket's street names and learn the most important dates in Newmarket's history, such as:
1800: Timothy Rogers explores the area that will become today's Newmarket
1801: Joseph Hill built the first gristmill near today's Fairy Lake
1853: The first railroad in Upper Canada was built, called the Ontario, Huron and Simcoe Railway
1857: Newmarket became a village
1880: Newmarket was incorporated as an official Town with a population of 2,000
Also check out the Ontario Heritage Foundation Plaque near the Water Street Bridge at the foot of Main Street.

Central Historic Newmarket Real Estate listings homes houses detached
Historic and picturesque area in upper York Region was a delicious discovery by prospectors in the early 1800's who were drawn to the presence of the Holland Canal and fertile soil for farmers. Hundreds of acres of farming properties in Newmarket's outskirts still today are well known throughout Canada for the greatest harvests. Furriers and farmers are to thank for the beginnings of a town that has it all.
Newmarket is a very multicultural place to live. Its population is at over 84,000, growing at a steady pace. Central Newmarket is of course in the centre. It is primarily older homes, some of which are historic. Little shops and cafes line the Main street and there is a beatiful little lake located in the middle of it all. Fairly Lake is surrounded by the fantastic paved Tom Taylor Trail and biking trail, wandering geese, beautiful lush flowers, an awesome kids park, park benches and gazebos. A really beautiful and calming stroll on a sunny day. A wonderful new plan is in the works in this area, the Urban Park. It celebrated its opening on Sept 30, 2011. It will be the cultural hub of the city, with a summer water feature that converts into an outdoor ice rink in the winter, a performance area with concerts and displays and is also the grounds for the very popular Farmers' market.
Main Street is surrounded by gorgeous historic architecture from as early as the 1806, with streetlights, and lush colorful flower barrels. Local businesses provide boutiques, patio eateries, live theatres and a seasonal farmer's market in a vibrant setting. Also located on Main Street is the Elman W. Campbell Museum, which has a collection of Newmarket artifacts. Visit york.ca for further information on community and cultural events.
Average House Prices Beautiful central newmarket real estate ranges from $250,000 to massive historic beauties over $700,000. A very suitable and safe area for young families, retirees, professionals. Older board and batten homes are commonly seen. The central part of newmarket has some condominiums as well as detached homes and semis. The uniqueness of every property and the massive old oak trees brings warm charm to the area.
Transit The Go station is conveniently located in the central part of town, at the Tannery Mall. The Viva bus also runs up and down Yonge Street from Richmond Hill. An extension project is in the works as well within Newmarket to carry on east along Davis Dr., all the way to 404. The Go bus Station is located on Davis drive at the far west end of town. Visit vivanext.com for more information on the rapidway plans for Davis Dr. The commute from Toronto has proven shorter than actually driving from one end of Toronto to the other. It pays to Go north!
