Isle of Sheppey - Elmley Nature Reserve - UK Wildlife - Birds & Bugs
Music by
Elmley Nature Reserve
Elmley Nature Reserve is a 3200 acre estate based on an island in the Thames, situated away from the bustle of North Kent, just an hour from London.
The Reserve is a family farm and is unique in being the only independent National Nature Reserve in the UK. A visit to the reserve begins with a wildlife adventure as the 2 mile access drive crosses through the reserve. Visitors can use their cars as a hide and enjoy wonderful views of hares, lapwing, redshank, merlin, marsh harrier and more. Please remain in your cars to avoid disturbing the wildlife. From the car park it is a mile walk alongside the marshes down to the first hide, which overlooks a wonderful ‘scrape’, a shallow pool where avocet breed and thousands of wading birds drop in from the nearby Swale mudflats. Blue badge holders can drive to the first hide.
There are walking trails around the reserve and three further hides. The sky is often filled with birds – flocks of curlew and golden plover, teal and pintail, starlings spooked by the merlins, hen harriers, marsh harriers and short-eared owls. The reserve is very exposed, so wrap up well and prepare for an amazing trip. Dogs are not allowed on the reserve, except registered assistance dogs.
The entrance contribution is £5 per car or £2.50 per person for large groups, . Alternatively visitors can join Friends of Elmley, £20 a year for an individual or £30 for a couple or family. Annual parking passes are available. Friends receive unlimited access, a monthly newsletter, volunteering opportunities and invitations to free events and late openings.
Visitors can also stay on the Reserve in three Shepherd’s Huts.

Westhay Moor Walk, National Nature Reserve, Somerset Walks In England, UK
Westhay Moor Walk, National Nature Reserve, Somerset Walks In England, UK
Westhay Moor Walk was about 4.75 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of raised trackways, field and woodland paths, tracks and a some short quiet lane sections. The walking was mostly easy on level ground with one short gentle ascent and descent. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. There were 2 stiles to negotiate.

Vlog 2. My Life in London: City Social | Elmley Nature Reserve
This week I've had an amazing lunch at Michelin Starred City Social, followed by the famous Lion King play. I was not allowed to film during the performance, but you have to book tickets and watch it, is mandatory at least once in a lifetime;)
During the weekend we've been to Elmley Nature Reserve where we spent a beautiful night in a lovely hut out in the woods. Surreal, so different than what I am used to. This experience made me want to buy my own hut in the middle of nature. Hope you enjoy watching and don't forget to subscribe!

The wildlife benefits of ride management in woodland
Rides are access tracks or paths through woodland, which require management to maintain. Jon Rau from the Forestry Commission explores why rides are so important for biodiversity, and the many ways in which they can be improved for wildlife.
Jon describes the practical elements of ride management in a complementary video:
Filmed on location at Bentley Wood, by kind permission of the Trustees of Bentley Wood. In association with Out There Films. Directed by Eleanor Tew, Forestry Commission.
