South Coast
Between the Maobitou peninsula on the west and Eluanbi peninsula on the east, this is Kenting’s most popular tourist area, with a high concentration of beaches and resorts as well as restaurants, bars, cafes, and boutiques.
Nanwan, or South Bay, is in the crook where Maobitou and the main body of the Hengchun Peninula meet. This is the best and most popular locale for inshore frolicking—swimming, windsurfing, jet-skiing, kayaking, banana-boating, skin-diving, snorkeling, what have you. There are change rooms, showers, and shops renting all necessary gear/toys. Adding to Nanwan’s allure is the fact it is second only to nearby Kending town, which we visit next, for restaurants and watering holes.
Kending is fun-central in the park. This is where all the action happens at night. Highway 26 does double-duty as the town’s main street, and as the sun retires over the western horizon each day local residents don vendors’ hats and line both sides with food stalls. Backing them are scores of bricks-and-mortar enticements, with everything from cafes, bars, and restaurants to indie-designer jewelry and crafts shops. On the town’s eastern edge are some especially entertaining sights – small lorries which, once the shutters on the back cabins are lowered, magically become bars and pizzerias. Owners set up seating alongside. The former are stocked to “the rafters” with famous spirits brands, and the latter have flatbed-mounted brick pizza ovens.
Off Kending’s eastern end, in a pretty sheltered cove, is the Xiaowan (“Small Bay”) beach, directly across Highway 26 from two of the park’s resort-hotel queens, one of these the Howard Beach Resort (see Box). During the day a wide range of watersports equipment is available for rent at the beach. At night, after the water-focused fun ceases, the wide-deck wood-theme café/eatery here transforms into a mellow open-air bar, ’70s rock complementing the soothing music of arriving waves.
East of Kending is Banana Bay, site of a miniscule fishing harbor. On either side of its cement breakwater walls is easily accessible upraised-coral shoreline, beyond which is an underwater world popular with divers.
Nearby iconic park attractions are Shadao and Sail Rock. The first is a magnificent 300m stretch of protected beach that actually shines. In the on-site exhibition hall, it’s said this is Taiwan’s purest shell-sand; the coast makes a dramatic 90-degree turn here, meaning materials are washed in and churned but not easily washed out. Sail Rock is a towering 18m-high slab of exposed coral offshore said either to resemble a Chinese imperial war junk or US President Richard Nixon’s profile. But what I see is a Kenting angelfish.
Highlights of Kenting National Park, Taiwan
Besides the usual tourist stops shown in this video, it is possible to hike the many trails inside. We stood with hundreds of mainland China visitors and admired this scenic area with giant pieces of coral which contrasted with lava rocks, sea plants and trees, and a beautiful lighthouse until we couldn't take the crowds anymore.
White Sand Bay in Kenting town is where most visitors stay. A lively place filled with guesthouses, small B&Bs, two luxury resorts, many restaurants. Marine and I fully intended on taking some walks in the National Park but when faced with extreme humidity and heat, our resolve crumbles. Let me know how the hiking goes if you have the energy.
TAIWAN: Eluanbi Park
Eluanbi Lighthouse is located at the southern-most tip of Taiwan. Entrance to the park is NT40 for adults. The Kenting Shuttle Bus (not to confuse with the Kenting Express Bus from Kaohsiung) extends its route to Elunabi only on weekends and Public Holidays. The park has a big open ground, so it is easy to spend 2-3 hours in the park. If you are using a 1 Day Shuttle Bus Pass, do limit your time there, as you may want to visit other scenic spots, but the last shuttle bus may be around 5:30pm.

Moubitou park is placed along the coast in the Kenting National Park. There are cliffs which are naturally formed by the sea waves. There is a cat hill which resemble in shape with a sitting cat. The view of the sea is very beautiful as seen from the top of the hill.
How to reach there: The blue line of Kenting shuttle bus goes right at the door step of this park. You can check the schedule of the bus at the bus stop.

Uni-Resort Kenting is a 5-minute walk from the Elaunbi Lighthouse. Offering free Wi-Fi access, it also features a variety of facilities such as an outdoor swimming pool, a bowling alley, a fitness centre and a games room.

Eluanbi Lighthouse / 鵝鑾鼻燈塔 was completed in 1883, following requests from the American and Japanese governments to the Chinese government after several shipwrecks occurred in the 1860s (including the Rover incident). Chinese troops had to be sent to protect the lighthouse during construction from attacks by local tribesmen, and the lighthouse was surrounded by a fort with cannons and a ditch for protection. It is one of the rare examples in the world of a fortified lighthouse.
The lighthouse itself is 21.4 metres (70 ft) high and its light is 56.4 metres (185 ft) above the tidal high water. The light flashes every 10 seconds and its range is 27.2 nautical miles (50.4 km). Eluanbi Lighthouse is also known as The Light of East Asia because its light is the most intense of those on Taiwan.
The Southernmost point of Taiwan / 台灣最南點 has a sculpture representing the southernmost tip of Taiwan. Famous with the locals for pictures and a great sunset spot. No admission, but parking fee NT$50. The entrance to the carpark is about 200 meters further down the main road from the Eluanbi Lighthouse / 鵝鑾鼻燈塔/ 鹅銮鼻灯塔. There is also a regular bus service from Kenting to the village.

【三貂角燈塔】空拍 Aerial Photography of Taiwan 【Sandiaojiao Lighthouse】
Legends say that in the year 1626 AD, a Spanish ship set sail from the Philippines and reached the northeast coast of Taiwan. Because they did not know the name of their location, to be able to record it in their log, they named it San Diego in Latin, a common custom of the Spanish people, to name locations with “San”. This is the earliest record of foreigners arriving at the northeast coast of Taiwan. Early residents thus translated the name of the area according to the sound of the Latin name, becoming “Sandiao” in Taiwanese. “Sandiao” was located around a cape, and thus the area was named “Sandiao Cape”.

The Howard Beach Resort is monstrously huge - think, bowling alley, water slides their own convince store and shopping area, tunnel to the beach, aerobics classes, indoor squash court, more and a 10 minute walk into the center of Kenting. Definitely not my cup of tea. In hindsight is 20/20, I would have preferred staying in a smaller hotel located in the center.
Staff was pleasant, food good...And that's all I have to stay about the Howard Beach Resort.
