Emancipation Garden, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands
After you visit the shops in downtown Charlotte Amalie, be sure to stop by the Emancipation Garden park for a break. It's located behind Vendors Plaza at the east end of the shopping district. It was built to commemorate the freeing of the slaves in the Virgin Islands on July 3, 1848. The Virgin Islands Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Peter von Scholten, the Danish governor at that time. That was more than 14 years before Lincoln issued the American Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862.
Emancipation Garden contains a statue of a freed slave blowing a conch shell, and it has become a tradition to mark the anniversary every July 3, Emancipation Day in the US Virgin Islands, by blowing a conch shell in the garden. The park also contains a scaled down model of the Liberty Bell and a bronze bust of Denmark's King Christian, monuments demonstrating the American - Danish connection.
There are shade trees and benches scattered throughout the park and it's a nice place to take a break from a busy shopping trip or walking tour of downtown. The gazebo in Emancipation Garden is the site of several official government ceremonies throughout the year, occasional lunchtime concerts, as well as the Battle of the Choirs on Christmas Morning.
Emancipation Garden is located just north of Vendor's Plaza at the east end of the shopping district of Charlotte Amalie, which is next to Fort Christian.

A BRIEF VISIT TO THE VIRGIN ISLANDS & ST. THOMAS 1930s TRAVELOGUE MOVIE 53654
“A Brief Visit to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands” is the first part of a short 1930s film, In the Wake of the Buccaneers, produced by the Division of Motion Pictures for the U.S. Department of Interior. “A Brief Visit” highlights St. Thomas, promoting tourism for the U.S. Virgin Islands, which the U.S. purchased from Denmark in 1916. The film begins with a luxury steam liner arriving at St. Thomas (00:17), where people take a small boat to the island’s capital and largest city, Charlotte Amalie. In Charlotte Amalie, tourists can ride a donkey (01:07) and visit Emancipation Park (01:21)—or Emancipation Gardens — where the proclamation freeing the slaves was supposedly read in 1848. Other highlights of the capital city include Lower Town (01:30), the old drainage system (02:11), the market (02:26) where locals buy and sell produce and other goods, and the Cooperative (03:10). Local women show off woven hats and bags, including the chapo hat (03:28). Other attractions include the beaches of St. Thomas and Lindbergh Bay (04:03). While tourists enjoy the sights of St. Thomas, locals restock the ships’ supplies (04:53), including baskets of coal needed to power the steam ships. North of Charlotte Amalie is The Drake Seat (06:01), which commemorates Sir. Francis Drake and overlooks the scenic Magens Bay. Back in Charlotte Amalie is Bluebeard’s Castle Hotel (06:38), overlooking the harbor. Here, tourists enjoy the hotel and its gardens (07:20), as well as sitting on the veranda and sipping on a freshly prepared Swizzle (07:50), the region’s famous cocktail. The film concludes with a steam liner departing St. Thomas, the “Gem of the Caribbean” (08:43).

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI
Arrival into Saint Thomas harbor early in the morning and docked at the the Crown Bay pier.
A walking tour of Charlotte Amalie's primary historic sights from Kronprindsens Gade.
When walking down Main Street the buildings on the sea side of the road are narrow and long with alleys separating them. These buildings were warehouses for storing goods during the heyday of the Danish Sugar trade in Saint Thomas.
Continuing to Government Hill and to Government House in Kongens Gade -a neoclassical white structure with intricate ironwork along the balconies.
Passing the 99 steps - These steps were built in the mid 1700s, by the Danes, who found streets of steps to be the easiest way to climb up and down the steep hills of Charlotte Amalie.
Located on Tolbod Gade is Emancipation Park with the statue of Danish King Christian IX. The park was named in commemoration of the July 3rd, 1848 emancipation of slaves in the Danish West Indies.
And back to Crown Bay .

Charlotte Amalie, located on St. Thomas, is the capital and largest city of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI - Downtown HD (2015)
Charlotte Amalie, located on St. Thomas, is the capital and largest city of the U.S. Virgin Islands, founded in 1666 as Taphus (meaning beer houses or beer halls). In 1691, the town was renamed to Amalienborg (in English Charlotte Amalie) after Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel (1650–1714), queen consort to King Christian V of Denmark. It contains a deep-water harbor that was once a haven for pirates and is now one of the busiest port of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean, with about 1.5 million cruise ship passengers landing there in 2004. Protected by Hassel Island, the harbor has docking and fueling facilities, machine shops, and shipyards and was a U.S. submarine base until 1966. The town has been inhabited for centuries. When Christopher Columbus came here in 1493, the area was inhabited by both Island Caribs and Taíno. It is located on the southern shore at the head of Saint Thomas Harbor. In 2010 the city had a population of 18,481, which makes it the largest city in the Virgin Islands Archipelago. Hundreds of ferries and yachts pass through town each week, and at times the population more than doubles.
The city is known for its Danish colonial architecture, building structure and history, and a dozen streets and places throughout the city have Danish names. Charlotte Amalie has buildings of historical importance including St. Thomas Synagogue, the second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere, and the oldest Lutheran church in the Western Hemisphere, the Frederick Lutheran Church. The town has a long history of pirates, especially stories of Bluebeard and Blackbeard (Edward Teach). In the 17th-century, the Danes built both Blackbeard's Castle and Bluebeard's Castle attributed to the pirates. Blackbeard's Castle is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Another tourist attraction is Fort Christian, the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands Archipelago. A copy of the Liberty Bell is located in Emancipation Park, which is a tourist attraction.
