Sichuan Vlog: Emei Shan (Mount Emei)!
** Please expand the description box for itinerary & music details**

instagram.com/timandglo
We left the South Train Station of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, at 7:42am with Emei Shan (Emai Mountain) Station as our final destination. The train ticket cost just 74 RMB per person!
Once at Emei Shan Station we made our way through the crowds and found the booth that sells tickets for the mountain. We bought bus tickets to take us to Wuxiangang parking lot (40 RMB per person). We purchased our entrance tickets to the entire mountain here, which cost 185 RMB per person. From Wuxiangang, it is about 50 km to Golden Summit, a hike that we were told is strenuous and takes two full days. We didn't have this kind of time or energy, so we went for a short walk instead. We took the trail to QingYin Pavilion and the Monkey Forest then back to Wuxiangang parking lot, which took 2.5-3 hours total. This walk was absolutely beautiful, and we highly recommend it!
The trail follows a stunning river valley that is lush with bamboo and trees. The trail itself is made up of paved walkways and bridges, which makes it accessible to hikers of all fitness levels. We particularly enjoyed breathing in fresh air and looking up to see a bright blue sky.
As it is with most mountain parks and trails in China, you will come across numerous vendors selling their wares. This could be food (steamed corn, sweet potato, cured pork, etc.) and drinks or trinkets. Tim couldn't resist the urge to buy himself a toy snake for 10 RMB, which we lovingly now call Hou-Hou (meaning Monkey-Monkey) in honor of the trail where he was purchased! :p
We were surprised that we only saw two monkeys on our walk because we heard and read a lot about the number of monkeys around the trail and their aggressive behavior. Still, we were fortunate to spot two monkeys on our walk before we turned around for lunch closer to our starting point, the Wuxiangang parking lot.
Back at Wuxiangang, we purchased roundtrip bus tickets to Leidongping for 70 RMB per person. The ride to Leidongping took about 1.5 hours. By the way, be sure to keep your bus tickets because they are roundtrip! ;) (The 40 RMB and 70 RMB tickets allowed us to get from Leidongping to Baguo Si/Village at the base of the mountain the next day for free.)
At Leidongping, we realized how unprepared we were as far as clothing was concerned because it was COLD. It turns out we're not the only tourists who find themselves in this conundrum because vendors actually rent out long, warm jackets for just 30 RMB + 170 RMB as a deposit. The same option is available at Golden Summit on top of the mountain.
From Leidongping it takes about 20 minutes (on a quiet day when the path is clear) to walk to the cable car station. The station runs from 6:30 - 18:00, and tickets cost 65 RMB to ascend the mountain and 55 RMB to descend per person.
At the summit we made our way to the Golden Summit Hotel and got a room with spacious bathroom for 880 RMB. However, the room was rather cold and it took time for the heating to warm up the room. In addition to heating and hot water, the hotel has wifi in the reception area. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant, but there are plenty of snack shops and restaurants at the summit. We paid 108 RMB total for a set meal that consisted of rice + 2 vegetable and 2 meat dishes. Food is definitely more expensive at the summit (and not necessarily more delicious), but it's nice to have the option for those who spend the night at the summit.
After dinner we made our way back to our warmed up hotel room, drew the curtains and caught an early night's sleep in order to rest and catch the sunrise the next day!
As always, thank you for watching!!
Happy travels!! :)

China Sichuan Emei Mountain. Jiangkaishi's residency (Chiang Kai-shek residency). Sichuan tourist attraction. Chengdu, China June 2015
Chiang Kai-shek (October 31, 1887 – April 5, 1975) was a Chinese political and military leader who served as the leader of the Republic of China between 1928 and 1975. He is known by his given name Chiang Chung-cheng (蔣中正, Jiǎng Zhōngzhèng) or his courtesy name Chiang Chieh-shih (蔣介石, Jiǎng Jièshí) in Standard Chinese.
Mount Emei ([ɤ̌.měi̯]; Chinese: 峨眉山[1]; pinyin: Éméi shān) is a mountain in Sichuan Province, China, and is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China. Mt. Emei sits at the western rim of the Sichuan Basin. The mountains west of it are known as Daxiangling. A large surrounding area of countryside is geologically known as the Permian Emeishan Large Igneous Province, a large igneous province generated by the Emeishan Traps volcanic eruptions during the Permian Period. At 3,099 metres (10,167 ft), Mt. Emei is the highest of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China.
Administratively, Mt. Emei is located near the county-level city of the same name (Emeishan City), which is in turn part of the prefecture-level city of Leshan. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Sichuan (Chinese: 四川; pinyin: About this sound Sìchuān, formerly Szechwan, Szű-chuan or Szechuan) is a province in southwest China. The capital is Chengdu, a key economic center of Western China.
The name of the province is an abbreviation of Sì Chuānlù (四川路), or Four circuits of rivers, which is itself abbreviated from Chuānxiá Sìlù (川峡四路), or Four circuits of rivers and gorges, named after the division of the existing circuit into four during the Northern Song dynasty.

Emei Shan, Sichuan, Part1 - China Travel Channel
Emei Shan is one of the 4 sacred mountains in China and symbolizes fire. Our guide had great respect for the Tibetan macaques, who do not appear that holy. By car you can drive along a beautiful winding road to an altitude of 2500 m above sea level. After a half an hour of walking through the obligatory souvenir streets you reach the cable car which carries you another 500 m higher. The older gentleman you see in the video, accompanied by his daughter, has been traveling for two weeks already. They climbed the mountain by foot over the course of several days after spending several days traveling here from around the Peking area by train. The man's wish is to personally read a famous written scroll which is kept in the monastery.
The original daoistic Crane Temple is famous for its library and its preservation and continued development of medical knowledge.
The view from the 3000 m peak is breathtaking, as long as there are no clouds. When the view is clear, it is possible to see the first peaks of the Himalayas.
In addition to leaving devotional bits of paper, some confused Buddhists have fallen down the cliff in order to reach nirvana. The temple was completely rebuilt following a fire where everything was burnt down except for the bell. Even the three Bodhisattvas in the main hall are not the original ones.
The close connection of the temple to Tibetan Buddhism can be seen through its visitors.
In 1996, Emei Sahn was made UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Giant Buddha of Leshan.

Emei Mountain - China's Largest Sacred Mountain Explained
Emeishan, or Emei Mountain, or Mount Emei - no matter what you call it - is the largest out of the 4 sacred Buddhist mountains in China. It's a very popular place for Buddhist pilgrimages. We're not Buddhist, but we still enjoyed the many monasteries and temples that are scattered across the mountain.
In this video I explain the religious significance of Mount Emei as we make our way along the paved paths that connect beautiful nature and religious structures. I've never been to a place where nature and culture connect like they do on Mount Emei.

【As a sacred mountain】
Mount Emei is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China, and is traditionally regarded as the bodhimaṇḍa, or place of enlightenment, of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra. Samantabhadra is known in Mandarin as Pǔxián Púsà (普贤菩萨).
16th and 17th century sources allude to the practice of martial arts in the monasteries of Mount Emei[4] made the earliest extant reference to the Shaolin Monastery as Chinese boxing's place of origin.
【Sunrise and clouds sea】
Great spectacles of Mount Emei include the sunrise and Clouds Sea seen from the Golden Summit of the mountain.
The sunrise is very varied, but optimally begins with the ground and sky being in the same dark purple, soon showing rosy clouds, followed by a bright purple arc and then a semicircle where the sun is coming up.
The Clouds Sea includes several cloud phenomena, e.g. clouds appearing in the sky above, in addition to the regular clouds beneath.
【Indigenous animals】
Visitors to Mount Emei will likely see dozens of Tibetan Macaques who can often be viewed taking food from tourists. Local merchants sell nuts for tourists to feed the monkeys. Some monkeys may be seen eating human food such as potato chips and even drinking soda from discarded bottles.
The Emei Shan Liocichla, a passerine bird, as well as the Emei Music Frog, a vocal frog, are named after the site.
【Flora】
Mount Emei is known for its high level of endemism and approximately 200 plant species in various plant families have been described from this mountain.
