Emerald Hill Info:
Emerald Hill is a neighbourhood and a conservation area located in the planning areas of Newton and Orchard in Singapore. Former home to many members of the city-state's wealthy Peranakan community, it is located near Orchard Road. Many of its homes feature Chinese Baroque architecture. Emerald Hill is also the setting for some of the short stories by the late Singaporean author Goh Sin Tub. Many of the homes were designed by Mr R T Rajoo (Rethinam Thamby Rajoo Pillay) an architect/contractor of those days who died in 1929 at his home in Tank Road, Singapore.
Before the time of Stamford Raffles and William Farquhar, Emerald Hill was believed to be fully covered in primary rainforest. However, around the early 1800s, many Chinese immigrants occupied the land with Gambier or pepper plantation to make a living of their own, exhausting the land to its ends.
By the turn of the twentieth century, the 13.2-hectare land and its three houses were the property of Seah Boon Kang and Seah Boon Kiat. In 1901, they subdivided the property into 38 plots, ten of which they kept while the remaining twenty-eight lots were sold to various people.
One of the persons who bought three lots (Lots 6, 7, 8), was an influential Peranakan named Lim Boon Keng. The builders of houses at Emerald Hill Road were mostly Peranakans or Straits-born Chinese in general; at least fifty-nine out of 112 houses were built in total. The first house in the area was built in 1902. By 1918, 33% of houses have been built.
During the Japanese Occupation, all the building of new houses stopped. After which, houses were continuously being erected until Emerald Hill Road was fully aligned by landed properties by 1950s.
For almost half a century, a community of Peranakans thrived in Emerald Hill Road. Lim Boon Keng and his family was the most prominent family amongst all Straits Chinese who lived on that hill. Most of the Peranakan family started moving out since the 1950s. Most of which, was because the head of the family at that time has already passed on, while other plots of lands were further developed to the present block of flats.
Emerald Hill has often been featured in Singaporean literature. Such titles include:
Emily of Emerald Hill (1983), by Stella Kon
The Nan-Mei-Su Girls of Emerald Hill (1989), by Goh Sin Tub
The Ghost Lover of Emerald Hill, by Goh Sin Tub
On This Emerald Hill, written by Jonathan Lim, directed by Christina Seargant
Rich People Problems, by Kevin Kwan in which the character of Astrid has a home in Emerald Hill. This is the 3rd book of the Crazy Rich... trilogy. The first book, Crazy Rich Asians was made into a movie.

$3.6 Million 100 Years Old Conservation House at Gambier Court, Sold by PropertyLimBrothers
This 2.5 Storey Strata Landed Property @ Gambier Court is a super RARE opportunity for landed living in District 9. What’s great about this property is that it features 3 bedrooms + ensuite, helpers room, yard toilet, high ceiling in living and dining and it comes with an individual front gate, garden, yard and back access directly to pool. With all of that, it’s no surprise that its entire built-up area stands at 2561sqft. As it is a corner unit, you get the beautiful morning sun pouring in daily to brighten your home and TOTALLY NO afternoon sun. The home is just walking distance away from Robertson Quay and Fort Canning MRT. You can also walk to Clarke Quay for drinks, UE Square for Delifrance or Liang Court for Japanese food…and you should walk because you are LITERALLY smack in the Orchard/Robertson/River Valley vicinity. The unit is part of a boutique development, is on 99 years leasehold with tenure from 1997 and was top in 1999. Interested?

Singapore - Emerald Hill Road (2018)
Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign city-state and island country in Southeast Asia. It lies one degree (137 kilometres or 85 miles) north of the equator, at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, with Indonesia's Riau Islands to the south and Peninsular Malaysia to the north. Singapore's territory consists of one main island along with 62 other islets. Since independence, extensive land reclamation has increased its total size by 23% (130 square kilometres or 50 square miles).
Stamford Raffles founded colonial Singapore in 1819 as a trading post of the British East India Company; after the latter's collapse in 1858, the islands were ceded to the British Raj as a crown colony. During the Second World War, Singapore was occupied by Japan. It gained independence from the UK in 1963 by federating with other former British territories to form Malaysia, but separated two years later over ideological differences, becoming a sovereign nation in 1965. After early years of turbulence and despite lacking natural resources and a hinterland, the nation developed rapidly as an Asian Tiger economy, based on external trade and its workforce.
Singapore is a global commerce, finance and transport hub. Its standings include: the most technology-ready nation (WEF), top International-meetings city (UIA), city with best investment potential (BERI), third-most competitive country, third-largest foreign exchange market, third-largest financial centre, third-largest oil refining and trading centre and the second-busiest container port. The country has also been identified as a tax haven.
Singapore ranks 5th on the UN Human Development Index and the 3rd highest GDP per capita. It is ranked highly in education, healthcare, life expectancy, quality of life, personal safety and housing. Although income inequality is high, 90% of homes are owner-occupied. 38% of Singapore's 5.6 million residents are permanent residents and other foreign nationals. There are four official languages: English (common and first language), Malay, Mandarin and Tamil; almost all Singaporeans are bilingual.
Singapore is a unitary multiparty parliamentary republic, with a Westminster system of unicameral parliamentary government. The People's Action Party has won every election since self-government in 1959. The dominance of the PAP, coupled with a low level of press freedom and restrictions on civil liberties and political rights, has led to Singapore being classified by some as a flawed democracy. One of the five founding members of ASEAN, Singapore is also the host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat and a member of the East Asia Summit, Non-Aligned Movement and the Commonwealth of Nations.

An affluent little enclave just off Orchard Road, Emerald Hill is a place for the wealthy to live in what seemed like a gated community from the colonial days. There is only time for a quick walk through the community, and to take a few photos, but I had a nice lunch at the bottom of the road. Filmed March 18, 2014.
