An American in Thailand -
As an expat living in Thailand since 1996, Scott Mallon has worked as a photojournalist for the past twelve years, been inside both Bang Kwang and Klong Prem Prisons (as a journalist), lost months at a time partying the days and nights away, been hospitalized several times, been near death once, fought in Muay Thai, managed a world-rated championship boxer, trained professional boxers, been thrown in jail, and fathered two children. Somehow, through it all, he's managed to remain married to the same Thai woman.
You'll get the good, the bad, and the ugly from someone who has lived here - really lived. No touristy fluff, no backpacker BS, no illusions of grandeur, only the truth as An American in Bangkok sees it.

EMERALD POOL IN KRABI, THAILAND! Seriously GORGEOUS!!
#EMERALD_POOL #KRABI #THAILAND
Krabi Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) is a unique attraction in southern Thailand. Krabi is well-known for areas of outstanding natural beauty and one place that should make your must-see list is the Emerald Pool in the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park, an unusual lowland forest rich in bio-diversity, complete with a nature trail and a crystal pond. Located in the Khao Pra-Bang Kram area, the nature trek is a superb place to spot rare animals and plant species including the Pitta Gurney bird which was once considered extinct. The forest is lush with age-old trees stretching up to the sky, unusual forest creatures and limestone foothills that open onto a dazzling emerald pool.
Thung Teao Forest National Park is a virgin rainforest home to spectacular flora and fauna unseen elsewhere in Thailand. A 2.7 kilometres nature trail provides a superb vantage point, plus there’s a waterfall to explore, although the major attraction is the emerald pool also known as the crystal pool. The emerald waters are wonderfully warm and crystal clear making them great for swimming in, there’s even a small ladder to help you get in and out. It’s a stunning eco-tourist spot with visually beautiful aquamarine colours surrounded by tropical rain forest and a fantastic spot for bird watchers. The journey to the emerald pool begins at the wildlife sanctuary office and takes around 800 metres through a well-trodden forest path or alternatively you can follow the longer nature trail which winds through spectacular tropical rain forest - one of the few remaining in Southern Thailand. The nature trek should be taken slowly so that you get a chance to see some of the very rare animals living in this ancient woodland.
Arrived at the poll you have the opportunity to refresh yourself. The Emerald Pool is around 1-2 meters deep so if you feel like bathing you should definitely go for it. The ambience of the pool is really beautiful and photographers will love it there. Since the limestone rocks are very slippery, you should be careful when entering the waters. Wearing bathing shoes is recommended.
How to get there:
Excursions to the Emerald Pool are offered by many travel agencies in Krabi Town, Ao Nang and Klong Muang Beach or else you do have the chance to book your favorite trip online. The tour usually includes pick up from the hotel, lunch and a visit to the Hot Springs and Tiger Cave Temple. We booked our day trip with Andaman Islands Tours and Travels.
Andaman FB Page:
Transport to the Emerald Pools can also be organized on your own. A taxi from Krabi Town to the National Park and returns costs around 1,800 baht and can be shared with multiple passengers. The drive to the national park takes about 1 hour (60 kilometers). To escape the tourist crowds set up your timings early. To make sure that you will have this beautiful scenery almost for yourself, you should start your trip in the morning (7:00 clock). If you still haven`t had enough from sightseeing you should visit the Tiger Cave Temple on your way back to Krabi.
Accommodations
Many are wondering where to stay for a trip to the Emerald Pool. Here are the accommodations, which we love to recommend you, and which are ideally suited as a starting point:
Krabi Town: The city of Krabi Town is with 60 kilometers the closest to the Emerald Pool and therefore the best starting point for excursions to this natural wonder. Here we can recommend the Family Tree Hotel – a boutique hotel in the middle of the old town. As a budget alternative for backpackers, the Sleep Well Hostel is one of the best backpacker choices in Krabi Town.
Ao Nang: A popular vacation spot and a good starting point for exploring the Krabi area. Ao Nang is located approximately 70 kilometers from the Emerald Pool and here you will find a huge variety of accommodation. Especially nice is the Holiday Inn Resort Krabi. This lovely hotel is located right on the white sandy beach of Ao Nang. Backpackers love to stay at the TAN Hostel x Cafe – cozy ambience, comfortable beds and delicious breakfast, what more could you ask for. we were in Hotel Alisa Ao Nang. This hotel is very close to everything and it has nice big rooms compared to the room rent.

Thailand: Emerald Pool & Hot Spring
*** Thailand: Emerald Pool & Hot Spring**
Thailand is widely known for its beautiful islands and beaches. However, there are few unknown gems which are worth visiting in a lifetime. Krabi in recent times has become the famous tourist destination in Thailand. In this video, you will check out 3 unique places to visit on the outskirts of Krabi Town -
1. Emerald Pool - It is located in the forest reserve area in Krabi province. It is a 1 hr drive from Krabi Town. It is a dense forest with a hill trek to reach Emerald Pool. On the way, you’ll see amazing natural water streams flowing through the forest. Emerald Pool itself is a small pond which is filled by the streams
2. Blue Lagoon - Within Emerald Pool periphery, 1400 metres above the hill is a beautiful dreamy scenery called Blue Lagoon. A very small pond with Lush green surroundings and the water has a unique emerald blue colour due to the layers of various mineral deposits.
3. Hot Spring Waterfall - Spectacular Hot springs right in the middle of a forest reserve area. A 10 feet hot spring flows down from hill. The origin of water is believed to be from volcanic formations. Spring water is really warm and loaded with minerals like Calcium and Fluorine. A swim here is a good Spa treat for skin

Krabi Emerald Pool
Krabi, Emerald Pool:
The Emerald Pool (Sra Morakot), is breathtakingly beautiful and the water is a perfect color if you are there at the right time. Low season is the best time as the color of the water is so much nicer, during high season there are to many people in the pool churning up the sand etc so the colors are not as vibrant.
It’s a nice easy drive to the Emerald Pool from Krabi just take Highway 4 to Khlong Thom district then turn left to Route 4038 to Lam Hap Sub-district. There are plenty of sign posts and the drive took us about an hour from Ao Nang.
Try to get there early and if your lucky you will have the pool nearly to yourself. Avoid Thai Public Holidays as there can be hundreds and hundreds of people there.
Entry fees are 200baht per person to the National Park and a 20baht parking fee.
There are toilets and little eating places near the car park then it is about an 800 meter walk to the pool (slightly uphill).
Food and drinks are not allowed to be taken into the park - except for bottles of water.
The water in the Emerald Pool comes from the very porous rock layers and contains high amounts of Calcium Carbonate so you cannot drink it. Mineral deposits are all around the edges of the Emerald Pool making it extremely slippery, so be careful getting in and out.
We have been here many times now and normally spent a couple of hours at the Emerald pool, there are hardly any people there early in the morning, the water is luke warm, there’s plenty of shade and little seating areas, it is a very peaceful and beautiful place that we love showing to family and friends. Emerald pool - Krabi Thailand
A natural mountain spring flows over large rocks and constantly fills the pool via two streams. The base of the pool is sandy gravel and the walls are rocks which are slippery.
This place is in a tranquil setting and most appreciated if you get there early
before the tour crowds arrive. Opening time is 8:30am (200THB entrance),
and it's around 60 Kms or 1.5 hours from Ao Nang by bus.
If you decide to ride a motorbike,
it could take around the same time,
but it could be a little tiring and you have to be constantly aware of the traffic.

Der Emerald Pool oder auch Sa Morakot genannt liegt in der Provinz Krabi. Die schönen türkisblauen Farben entstehen durch den hohen Kalk- und Mineraliengehalt des Sees.
The Emerald Pool Krabi Thailand.
Emerald Pool
A short hop from the Hot Springs will take you to the Krabi Emerald Pool ('Sa Morakot' in Thai). The pool is so called, not surprisingly, because of its colour. It really is a quite remarkable sight and does live up to its name. After your dip in the Krabi hot springs, a splash and a swim in the warm clear water is an incredible and refreshing experience. The Emerald Pool is set in lush rain forest jungle with towering trees and the constant rhythmic music of crickets and frogs.
The water really is a joy to swim in, the water is just so clear. Be a bit careful getting in and out though, it is a bit slippy in places.
You can walk through the jungle along very well maintained paths and enjoy the humid but cooler air in the shade of the trees. This is a part of Krabi that is often overlooked, the richness of the jungle, the million shades of green, the smells of exotic flowers; this is what the tropics is all about. Many of the trees are marked with the name of their species so, great for any botanists!
There are two routes taking you though the jungle to the Emerald Pool, one is along a winding concrete narrow path that takes you right through the jungle, this route is about 1400m, the other route is a bit shorter, about 800m and wider, it is wide enough for vehicles but is also extremely beautiful and shady.
Please remember that these areas are National Park. If you do take any plastic water bottles or snacks in plastic wrappers, please take the empty wrappers and bottles with you when you leave.
