Saskatoon to Emma Lake in Three Minutes
An iPod time lapse of our Saskatchewan Day drive from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Emma Lake, Saskatchewan. Nothing special, but the change in landscape from the start to finish is of interest. Another hour north and it would be trees on each side of the highway. Saskatchewan is more than half forest, not just flat prairie. Now you know. :) Thanks for watching.
Beautiful Emma- Emma Lake Saskatchewan, Canada
This poem was borne out of what I felt and experienced while on a 3-day experiential academic field trip to Emma Lake (Kenderdine Campus). On one of the days I was there for, I woke up early in the morning, at about 6am, walked to the Lake and some unrestricted woodland areas around the Lake to capture sights and sounds around the Lake in the morning. I wanted to know what the lake felt, looked, sounded and smelt like in the morning. I wanted to get a feel for what made the Lake special, why would artists want to come here, why would students or writers come here? what makes this place special? And I found all my answers that morning from walking around the Lake!
What I discovered was a serene, calm and beautiful environment where you could hear yourself think. The scenery (the lake, the trees, the sounds of the animals in the morning- the sounds of the birds, squirrels, etc, saw two white tailed deer! ) was beautiful! It was a scenery/environment that I could go to, to connect with nature and gain inspiration to get important projects done! The air around the lake smelled fresh, void of air or noise pollution, it was nature at its best!
Coming from living in London, England- the definition of busy and going to Emma Lake the day after I arrived in Canada was a huge environmental change for me. Emma Lake brought me peace that needs to be experienced to be understood.
I wrote this poem to capture the beauty and essence of the Lake. I started off by describing it in an imaginative way i.e. from the eyes of Christopher who named the Lake after his sister Emma. I then moved on from the past to the present by highlighting the current benefits of the lake. I ended the poem by pointing out the issues I perceived as threats to the Lake's beauty.
From the award winning book by Allan Casey- Lakeland, threats to the beauty and essence of the lake were detailed.
My aim was to write a poem to draw attention to this wonderful piece of nature and to create awareness on some of the issues posing a threat to its beauty. Through this poem, I hope people can appreciate the beauty of the Lake and reflect on the threats to it so that those threats can be subdued as much as possible. Subduing the threats will preserve the Lake's beauty for future generations to appreciate, in addition to enhancing its resilience to natural or anthropogenic disturbances.
I have a background in Engineering and this is my first attempt at a poem ever!
I hope I've been able to portray to you, in my own innovative way, the message of saving and preserving a beautiful piece of nature.

July 10 - Explore Kiteboarding at Emma Lake
Tragically, there wasn't enough wind to go kiteboarding, so we did paddleboarding instead. Pro tip: if you're going to stand on open water for an hour and a half, wear sun screen.
Cheers,
