Torrington (in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia) is a high mineralised area. The principal minerals extracted were cassiterite (tin), and wolframite (tungsten) and there are literally hundreds of old mines and prospects in and around the Mole Tableland, where Torrington is located.
These photos have been copied from old NSW Mines Department reports, dating from around 1900-1920.

BROWNYS FIRST ADVENTURE RIDE
Trip to Lightning Ridge
Steve, Danny and Ray head off the Lightning Ridge to fossick for black opals. More an adventure than a rewarding trip away, we could have done more research before leaving. The Australian outback is a beautiful, wild place and it's great to discover how people live there today a well as in the past.
