Hiking Emory Peak, Townsend Point, Toll Mountain - Big Bend National Park, TX
A hike up to Emory Peak, the highest point in Big Bend National Park, and then a hike up to Townsend Point and Toll Mountain, both about a half mile off trail. This was my first time in Big Bend, but I hope to return and hike more of the high peaks.

On a recent trip to West Texas for a memorial service for my Father, my brother and I took a few extra days to expose our families to the vastness of West Texas and the home of their Grandfather. Join us as we take them to see some of the sights that is WEST TEXAS.
While staying in Big Bend National Park, we elected to stay in the Chisos Lodge located in the Chisos Basin. Temperatures in low lying lands in the park can reach into the 100's F during the summer. But you can count on a temperature differential of at least 10 degrees or more when in the higher elevations of the Chisos. Granted summer is not the best time to visit the park but schedules some times can't be altered. The best times to visit the park are in the Fall and Spring.

The View from Emory Peak in Big Bend National Park
A quick 360 spin around the view from the top of Emory Peak in Big Bend National Park in Texas. The peak is around 7825 feet. You can see miles away from the top.
Believe it or not you can get cell and 3g service on the peak where you can't most places in the park, though hiking 5 miles up a mountain is a bit much to make a phone call.
Blasting on Emory Peak Trail, Big Bend National Park, Texas
In order to provide safe passage for hikers and stock along the new Emory Peak Trail in Big Bend National Park blasting is required. The blasts will effectively bench an area with a steep cross-slope of bedrock. This is footage from those blasts performed by Big Bend Trail Crew and National Park Service staff in September of 2010. The new trail meanders through the Chisos Mountains providing easier hiking grades, spectacular views to the vast desert floor and ends at the highest peak in Big Bend National Park, Emory Peak.
The new Emory Peak Trail is officially opening in November of 2010.
Chisos Mountains - Emory Peak
Video from my hike to the top of the 7,825-foot Emory Peak, which is the most prominent peak in Texas at 4,485 feet. I started off at the Chisos Basin in the middle of Big Bend National Park and made the 5-mile climb in roughly two hours via the Pinnacle Trail.

On a recent video shoot our primary camera was completely destroyed by the wind and gravity. We are trying to raise $1000 to rectify this situation. I (Clint) recently lost my job. This couldn't have happened at a worse time. Thank you beyond expression if you can help us achieve our goal of getting a new camera.

Clint and Melody Parker

Backpacking Big Bend NP, Texas - March 2019
This is a three day backpacking trip in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park, Texas in March 2019. Trails hiked include, Laguna Meadows, Colima, Boot Canyon, South Rim, and Pinnacles. Anyone planning on hiking in the Chisos Mountains should bring an adequate supply of water. Springs and other water sources are unreliable even in the cool months. Also, high temperatures during summer, especially in the desert areas, can be dangerous. A backcountry campsite permit is required and is on a first come first serve basis up to 24 hours in advance. Campsites and rooms at the Chisos Basin trailhead can be hard to come by during holidays, spring break, etc. The next closest town with lodging is 30 miles west in Study Butte/Terlingua, Texas. Big Bend National Park, Emory Peak and Cerro Castelon
At the end of December in 2017, my sons and I traveled to Big Bend National Park to backpack through the Chisos Mountains and Santa Elena Canyon. Between the two, they ended up climbing a volcanic formation across from Cerro Castelon. We saw many birds, but especially interesting were the acorn woodpeckers at the head of Boot Canyon with stored acorns in granary trees. The Mexican jays on the Pinnacle Trail were amazingly large and beautiful. We also saw a very large red tailed hawk being mobbed on a cliff by violet green swallows near the summit of Emory Peak. While on the peak, we met a mother and teenager who had day hiked to the summit. they left about 45 min before sunset to head back to the Chisos Basin. We found them lost in the dark hours later after they had hiked toward the South Rim (opposite direction
Backpacking the Chisos Mountains | Big Bend National Park | Austin, TX
Backpacking through Big Bend National Park over Thanksgiving 2019.
Big Bend is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Driving in it gave me a similar impression to Death Vally, but then the Chisos Mountains come into view. The Chisos Mountain Range is totally contained within Big Bend National Park which is very unique. The tallest point (Emory Peak) is at 7,825' above sea level. The mountains provide incredible views out over the ultra-flat plains that surround them. Thanksgiving is supposedly one of the busiest days of the year at Big Bend, but you wouldn't know it. I would compare it to a slow day at Mt. Rainier National Park. Texas is not the first state that comes to mind when you think hiking, but this park is worth the trip.
