About Island Bay In the early days of European settlement, George Hunter was the chief proprietor of the Island Bay Estate, where he bred stock on his stud farm. The Island Bay portion was subdivided and auctioned in March 1879. In the late 19th century, Island Bay was settled by Italian and Shetlander fishermen. In 1905, Wellington's tramline was extended to Island Bay, increasing the area's popularity, and steadily transforming it into a seaside suburb. Many Island Bay villas, bungalows and shops date from the 1920s, a period of rapid development for the area. Many streets in Island Bay were named after British and European rivers. (From )
About The Empire Cinema & Eatery in Island Bay Stanley Chisholm commissioned the construction of the theatre, shops and billiard hall in 1924. When completed the buildings were sold to The Empire Theatre Company whose manager was a well known Wellington personality, Mr Tartakover. It operated as a movie theatre until March 1943 when it closed due to earthquake damage (although the billiard hall had close in 1928). It reopened later that year as the New Empire. The New Empire closed its doors on 1 June 1964, due to falling cinema attendees nationwide. Over the following years, the building changed hands a number of times and many businesses and shops operated from this building. In 2004 the Werry and Hays families took over the building and completely renovated it internally into three boutique cinemas and a cafe, opening on 1 September 2005. The cinema was sold in 2013, to Island Bay local Pat Vinaccia. The interior has been completely revamped with three boutique cinemas and eatery for its grand re-opening on May 14th, 2015. (From )
