Some Emu Park Businesses Struggling After Mining Downturn - WIN News Rockhampton (2014)
Some Emu Park business owners say they're struggling after last year's downturn in mining around Central Queensland. They hope the new Livingstone Council will work towards increasing the population base and making the most of the community's potential.
Report filed by Tom Maclean for the January 15, 2014 edition of WIN News Rockhampton with Paul Taylor.

Miracles in the Hatching: Behind the scenes at World Science Festival Brisbane’s ‘The Hatchery’
In an Australian-first encore, Queensland Museum’s Patrick Couper steps up as ‘surrogate mum’ to loggerhead turtle eggs. Precious eggs collected from Mon Repos (as part of the world-renowned Queensland Turtle Conservation project), incubated at exactly 29.9 degrees and miraculously timed to hatch ‘live’ before 120,000+ crowds each day of the blockbuster World Science Festival Brisbane (22-26 March). For Patrick, the experience is akin to becoming a first-time Dad: sleepless nights; pacing; and, in place of the delivery room dash, a ‘slow and steady’ drive with precious cargo from Bundaberg to Brisbane. Don’t miss The Hatchery, a free event during World Science Festival Brisbane, firmly staking its claim on the It’s Live! in Queensland calendar until 2021. The only festival on the planet where you can witness the moment tiny loggerhead turtles pop their heads out of eggs – a cycle of life normally hidden from view, deep beneath the sand. In the words of Crush, the turtle: ‘Righteous. Righteous!’

Giant dinosaur footprints saved in Queensland, Australia | Chasing dinosaurs
It's a race against time and the elements to save a once-in-a-lifetime dinosaur find. These footprints are almost 100 million years old!
The huge tracks from sauropods — like a brachiosaurus — are rare in Australia, but these look to be some of the best-preserved prints around.
The smaller footprints belong to two-legged creatures — a chicken sized insect-eater and a emu sized herbivore.
The dig site is a dried creek bed near the town of Winton in central west Queensland. The area is prone to floods. And while it was floodwater that brought these prints to light, it could floodwater that spells their end.
This isn't your average dinosaur dig. ABC Science Reporter, Belinda Smith watches as the palaeontologists excavate and relocate the trackway to Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum.

Two Emu Hatchlings
Like ostriches, kiwis, and other birds, emus are among dinosaurs’ closest living relatives. They grow to be tall (up to 1.9 m, or 6.2 ft), softly feathered, long-legged, flightless birds– but they start out small. Once the avocado-like eggs are laid, it takes about eight weeks for emus to hatch, and the 12 cm (5 in) tall chicks are generally walking within minutes.
Mareeba: Australia's Springfield. Emily Owens. 2005. Documentary.
Format: Digital Video / Sound: Stereo / Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Producer: Rob Henning
Mareeba, an outback town two hours north of Cairns, was once famous for its thriving tobacco-farming business. Since the industry's closure, Mareeba boasts having the only pub between Cairns and the Gulf of Carpentaria, a feature that has attracted many Indigenous communities from dry areas to settle in town. Youth unrest and violence are making Mareeba statistically one of the most dangerous towns in Australia. This film explores the resident's views of their town's identity crisis and their differing solutions to fix this problem.
‘Mareeba: Australia’s Springfield’ was Owen’s graduate short film, made whilst she was studying at VCA Film and Television, which is now a part of The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Music.
This film is released as part of the VCA Film and Television Digital Archive Project, a living audio-visual record of student short films that date back to 1966. The films in the collection display cultural, historical, social and aesthetic significance. They are part of a widespread research, pedagogy and engagement digital archive project aimed at preserving and showcasing this important part of our Australian moving image history.
