Ein (EN) Gedi Nature Reserve
Ein Gedi, just aside the Dead Sea in the Judean Desert, not too far from Jerusalem, is one of Israel’s premier hiking spots, featuring spectacular beauty, varied landscapes, and botanical gardens. There’s no doubt that Ein Gedi Nature Reserve is one of the most beautiful places in Israel. While it is located close to Jerusalem, it feels worlds away, Ein Gedi is, of course, one of the most popular escape spots for locals and tourists who take advantage of the reserve, botanical gardens, and the Dead Sea.
Hiking at Ein Gedi Nature Reserve
While the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve offers over nine different hiking trails, suitable for everyone from family groups to experienced hikers, and ranging in duration from just half an hour in length to a full day, some of the most popular hiking trails are those which head through Wadi David.
The following route is split into two, the first section is suitable for all hikers, whilst the second section is a slightly more challenging “moderate” hike.
The first section of the Wadi David Hike (the ‘lower section’) is a scenic hike from the Wadi David ticket office to David’s Waterfall. A circular walk, it’s a pretty walk which is expected to take no longer than one hour to complete.
The trail is well marked and setting out from the ticket office, you enter the wadi. A wadi is a dry river stream in the desert, although here, due to the David Spring, there is water flowing. The contrast that the wadi provides in its lush green landscape, compared to the surrounding desert is the first astonishing thing you will notice. As you continue, you will soon reach the beautiful David’s Waterfall and the pools in which people will be swimming. At this point, either turn back to the start or continue to the second section of the hike.
The second section, or the “upper section” as it’s known, is an additional three or four-hour hike. Continuing from David’s Fall you head onto more difficult trails towards Shulamit’s Spring, Dodim’s Cave, and finally, the Ein Gedi Spring. These trails involve a little climbing so be prepared for something a little physically demanding. Along the way, water pools are popular with hikers who decide to stop and cool off. The sweet water pool in Dodim’s Cave is particularly beautiful.
Whichever of the hikes you decide to take, you are likely to gaze in awe at the beauty of Ein Gedi Nature Reserve, and be amazed in particular at how it contrasts to its desert surroundings. The springs are a source of beauty today, and have, for thousands of years, been the source upon which life, both human and otherwise, has relied upon for living in the area.
Wildlife at Ein Gedi Nature Reserve
Ein Gedi is notable not only for its breathtaking natural beauty but also for the natural habitation of wildlife. As seen in the Nature and Parks Authority symbol for Ein Gedi, the Nubian Ibed is known to live in the park. In fact, Ein Gedi houses one of the largest herds of Ibex in all of Israel. Besides the Ibex, Ein Gedi is known to house wolves, foxes and bats along with many birds of prey. As you walk throughout Ein Gedi Nature Reserve you will be sure to see some of the wildlife flourishing in the area.

Ein Gedi עֵין גֶּדִי,عين جدي an oasis in Israel 14.2.2014
Ein Gedi (Hebrew: עֵין גֶּדִי, Arabic: عين جدي) is an oasis in
Israel,
located west of the Dead Sea, near Masada and the
Qumran.
The name Ein Gedi is composed of two Hebrew words:
ein means spring and gdi means goat-kid. En Gedi thus
means Kid spring. The word 'ain' or 'ein' also means
spring
in Arabic, and the word 'Gedi' or 'Jadi' also means a goat-kid
in Arabicn Caves.
Ein Gedi nature reserve was declared in 1971and is one
of
the most important reserves in Israel. The park is situated
on the eastern border of the Judean Desert, on the Dead
Sea coast, and covers an area of 14000 dunams (one
modern dunam equals the area of one decare).
The elevation of the land ranges from the level of the
Dead Sea at 423 meters (1,388 ft) below sea level to the
plateau of the Judean Desert at 200 meters above sea
level.
Ein Gedi nature reserve includes two spring-fed
streams with flowing water year-round: Nahal David
and Nahal Arugot. Two other springs, the Shulamit and
Ein Gedi springs, also flow in the reserve.
Together, the springs generate approximately three
million cubic meters of water per year. Much of the
water is used for agriculture or is bottled for
consumption.
The reserve is a sanctuary for many types of plant, bird
and animal species.
Ein Gedi Reserve - An Oasis in the Desert
The spectacular En Gedi Nature Reserve, just west of the Dead Sea shore in the Judean Mountains, is blessed with two year-round streams, the David Stream in the north and the Arugot Stream in the south.
The combination of En Gedi's location and its fresh water sources allow a wide variety of plant and animal species to thrive side by side. Among the mammals in En Gedi are herds of ibex and groups of hyrax. Nocturnal animals include foxes, wolves, hyenas, and even the occasional spotted leopard.

Masada, Ein Gedi and the Dead Sea - The ultimate guide to the Judaean Desert
A complete guide to visiting Masada, the Dead Sea, Ein Gedi and Qumran. This video will show
you all you need to know about the main sites in the Judaean Desert.
Here’s what this video is about:
Masada: How do you get there? A brief history of Masada and information about the best way to
see Masada – an unknown trail that surrounds Masada.
The Dead Sea is one of the wonders of the world. It is the lowest point on earth and you can
float on its dense salty waters! Where are the best beaches and what do you need to be aware
of?
Ein Gedi is a national park that is home to two spring-fed streams with drinkable water that flow
all year round - Nahal David and Nahal Arugot. A visit to Ein Gedi combines history – there is an
ancient, 6,000-year-old temple, and a beautiful synagogue with a mosaic floor – and wildlife –
there are plants that originally come from Africa, and you get to see animals including the ibex
and the rock hyrax. Ein Gedi is perfect for those who love hiking. Most visitors go for two to
three hours, but there are also longer full-day treks.
Qumran is a small archeological site. I describe it as the most important unimpressive site in the
world. The site is hardly spectacular in itself, but in order to understand it you need to look at the
cliffs all around and know the history of the place. The Dead Sea scrolls were found in the caves
set in the cliffs around Qumran. This is one of the most important archeological finds in Israel
and the world.

Ein Gedi Hotel Dead Sea Israel
Dead Sea / Ein Gedi, Israel - Abandoned Beach
August 21st, 2017.
This is the lowest place on earth, about -428m below sea level. Initially, we planned to go to Ein Bokek, where they built a tourist village directly at the Dead Sea, mainly consisting of hotels. But the receptionist at our hostel recommended to walk to the abandoned beach, which was just 15 minutes away. The area is closed, so we had to walk through broken fences and a blockade made of huge rocks. They closed the street and the newly built beach and parking lot some years ago, because the Dead Sea's water level is dramatically sinking and sinkholes are appearing, which made the street too unsafe.
It was an indescribable experience. A post-apocalyptic scenery with dead palm trees, overgrown paths, abandoned buildings, and total silence. There were no birds, no wind, the Dead Sea was eerily calm. Peaceful but kind of frightening. An unreal moment.
Ein Gedi Nature Reserve, Israel
The Ein Gedi Nature Reserve is the biggest oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea, and most famous as the place David escaped to when King Saul wanted to kill him (1 Samuel 23:29).

???????????? DEAD SEA ????????????
****Please click the link below for a floating Dead Sea experience video:
The Dead Sea known in Hebrew as Yam Ha-Melakh (the Sea of Salt) is the lowest point on earth. The saline water of the lake give lead to the name ‘Dead Sea’ because no fish can survive in the salty waters. The other result of the salty water of the Dead Sea is their renowned health and healing properties and the unique feature that one can float naturally in them.
???????????? MASADA NATIONAL PARK ????????????
Masada is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an ancient fortress occupying a breathtaking, strategic location high on a flat plateau above the Dead Sea. Masada is one of the greatest archaeological sites in Israel and, perhaps, across the world. Its dramatic ascent can now be made by cable-car, but the drama and imagery that this site portrays is no less powerful than it ever was.
???????????? STALACTITE CAVE NATURE RESERVE ????????????
The Reserve encompasses an extensive natural woodland area and the largest and most beautiful stalactites-stalagmites cave in Israel.

Israel, The Dead Sea, Wadi Arugot - You won't except to see that in the Desert!
Do you think the Dead Sea is only for old people with skin issues???
Think again!!!
In the dead sea area, there are some beautiful hikes and some extreme adventures, which you better be in shape to enjoy them without getting exhausted!
This video is the second day of two days trek I did just before I traveled to Brazil.
The trek began at Ein Gedi through Wadi David. The group climbed all the way up on the cliff to Ramat Hamidbar. Unfortunately, I missed this part due to a small car accident, But I was determined to join the group, so I found a detour and climbed up by myself from the other side.
We had camping over the night, where I got to know all the beautiful persons in the group.
On the Second day, we went down through a very stiff descending to the gorgeous Wadi Arugot!
Wadi Arugot was full of water, and we went all the way to the upper pools where we could see the flow from inside the mountain.
It is possible to make a half day trip to Wadi Arugot and enjoy more time in the pools, without a big and heavy backpack.
All the wadies near the Dead Sea are full of clean water after the massive rains we had last month.
