The modern witch of Salem: Feminist, empowered and anti-Trump
Amid the rise in political activism, young American women have been drawn to witchcraft as a sign of feminism and community building. Salem, Massachusetts, home of the Salem Witch Trials, is ingrained in the mythos of witches and draws many women curious about the movement. Some of these witches come from families that have practiced witchcraft for generations, while others are new to the world of spells. But one thing the witches of Salem all have in common: they see it as a feminist practice.

Americas-haunted-houses :Joshua Ward House, Salem, Massachusetts
~
The town of Salem, Massachusetts is no stranger to macabre record and disturbing legends and Joshua Ward House is one of its most prominent.
The Georgian/Federal style building was constructed by Joshua Ward, a wealthy merchant sea captain, in the late 1780s on foundations built by notorious former sheriff George Corwin.
Corwin was a bloody figure whose zeal added to the unfortunate events surrounding the Salem Witch Trials in the late 1600s.
Nicknamed ‘The Strangler’ for his preferred method of torture (which included tying his victims’ necks to their ankles until the blood ran from their noses), he is said to be responsible for death of countless witches.
One of them was Giles Corey, a man who stood accused of witchcraft who Corwin crushed to death by placing heavy stones on his chest in order to extract a confession.
Before he died, Corey curses the Corwin and all the sheriffs that would follow him.
Rumor has it every sheriff since Corey uttered this curse has died while in office or has been ‘forced out of his post as the result of a heart or blood ailment’.
Corwin himself died of a heart attack in 1696.
Today, many of Corwin's victims, including Corey, are said to live in Joshua Ward House.

Canon 24 of the council of Ancyra states: As for those who are practicing divination and continuing the customs of the heathen, and who are introducing persons into their homes with a view to discovering sorceries, or even with a view to purification, let them fall under the Canon of five years in accordance with the fixed degrees; three years of kneeling, and two years of prayer, without oblation.
Canon 92 of the Regional Council of Carthage states: It has pleased the Council to decree that a request be presented to the most glorious Emperors in order to have the remains of idolatry, not only as regards those embodied in images of idols, but also those in any kind of places, whether groves or trees, by all means wiped out.

SALEM witch trials - WikiVidi Documentary
The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. More than 200 people were accused, nineteen of whom were found guilty and executed by hanging . One other man was pressed to death for refusing to plead, and at least five people died in jail. It was the deadliest witch hunt in the history of the United States. Twelve other women had previously been executed in Massachusetts and Connecticut during the 17th century. Despite being generally known as the Salem Witch Trials, the preliminary hearings in 1692 were conducted in several towns: Salem Village , Salem Town, Ipswich, and Andover. The most infamous trials were conducted by the Court of Oyer and Terminer in 1692 in Salem Town. The episode is one of Colonial America's most notorious cases of mass hysteria. It has been used in political rhetoric and popular literature as a vivid cautionary tale about the dangers of isolatio...

Around 1740 the southern lean-to was replaced by today's gambrel-roofed addition. From 1750 to 1780, the house was owned by Capt. Joseph Hodges, and in 1780 the house was purchased by tanner Jonathan Andrew. The house was lived in by descendants of the Andrew family from 1780 to 1964, when the house was sold to the National Park Service.

Salem Willows Firemen's Muster 2018
This is part of Salem Heritage Days and an awesome event, an antique hand pumped fire engine muster where crews pump their machines to see who can play the longest stream of water. This is the oldest organized sport in the United States.
Spectators are invited to try out pumping the machines!
For more information on the sport and the machines visit:
The first firemen’s muster was held on July 4th, 1849 in Bath, Maine. It was a competition among crews with hand pumped fire engines to see who could shoot the longest stream of water. The tradition has been kept alive into the 21st century; every year on a Saturday close to July 4th, another muster is held in Bath.
On November 20th, 1890, the New England States Veteran Firemen’s League was founded in Boston. Musters were held all over New England, often attracting 50 or 60 entrants.
There are two classes of machine: A and B. The class is determined by the size of the cylinders. Each machine is allowed 15 minutes on the pumping platform to shoot as many streams as their crew can manage.
A suction hose goes into the water tank, which is kept full from a hydrant or a tanker truck. The foreman stands on top and keeps an eye on optimal wind conditions. The pipe crew handles the nozzle and aims the powerful spray down the line of red resin paper that is the playing field.
The judges measure the farthest flung dime sized drop of water to determine who wins each class.
