Gibbons at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center - Cuc Phuong National Park
The Cuc Phuong National Park has an Endangered Primate Rescue Center that you can tour with a guide for a few dollars a person. It was neat to see the gibbons swinging around in addition to all the different varieties of langurs.

The most beautiful place in Ninh Binh Vietnam - Van Long Nature Reserve
We spent 5 amazing days in Ninh Binh and found one of the most beautiful places we have ever come across. So much peacefulness and tranquility, Ninh Binh was spectacular in our eyes.
For our first stop, we visited Cuc Phuong National Park located in Ninh Binh province. Here we checked out a monkey and turtle rescue center to learn all about the animals from our guide that worked at the rescue center.
Cuc Phuong National Park - Endangered Primate Rescue Center
Address: đường rừng Cúc Phương, Cúc Phương, Nho Quan, Ninh Bình, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8:30–11:30am, 1:30–4:30pm
We then set out to go on a hike to visit a 1,000 year old ancient tree although only one of us makes the journey!
Address: Nho Quan District, Ninh Bình Province 432857, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8am–6pm
So where is the most beautiful place in Ninh Binh, Vietnam? We reckon it's Van Long Nature Reserve. We sat in awe during what we felt was the most beautiful destination of our entire Vietnam trip. Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve was more peaceful than the already awesome Trang An but with the same special breath taking beauty and more wildlife. Van Long was a simply magical destination and a must visit in Ninh Binh, Vietnam.
The next day we headed over to the more touristy area Tam Coc and opted to skip the rowboat ride there since we heard it was less enjoyable from a few sources including our own tour guide consultant.
Instead we had lunch at a popular lunch spot - Family Restaurant to get some energy for our final adventure (Thung Nam Bird Park).
Family Restaurant
Address: Ninh Hải, Hoa Lư District, Ninh Bình Province 43000, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8am–12am
For our final destination we headed over to Thung Nham Bird Park. Entry prices were a little steep comparatively to other tourist activities at 200,000 vietnamese dong however the bird park was very large and well kept. Definitely recommend taking a bicycle over there rather than a scooter so you can cycle around Thung Nham Bird Park and enjoy exploring the sights. Scooters have to be left at the entrance but bicycles can go inside the park.

Address: Thôn Hải Nham, Hoa Lư District, Ninh Bình Province, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 7am–6pm
Our private tour operator during our stay in Ninh Binh was Tommy’s Travel Service. Tommy is a Ninh Binh local unlike many of the other Ninh Binh tour operators and he organized an awesome tailored schedule for us. Our driver was the kind Mr. Ha. If you're planning to visit Ninh Binh Vietnam, we highly recommend Tommy's Travel Service. He's a really nice guy too.

STORYLINE
The largest known population of rare grey-shanked doucs has been discovered in a remote part of Vietnam, raising the chances that the endangered monkeys can be saved from extinction.
We found the douc langur in 5 provinces in Vietnam and we estimated at this time already that Quang Nam had the highest population, highest number with more than 200, probably 250 animals. In total in Vietnam we estimated 600 to 700 animals said Tilo Nadler, director of the endanger primate rescue centre located in the Cuc Phuong national park in northern Vietnam.
Considered one of the world's 25 most endangered primates, the species has only been recorded in the five central Vietnamese provinces. Fewer than 1,000 are believed to still exist, and until now, only one other population with more than 100 animals was known.
It is nice that the surveys now confirm our estimations were correct, Nadler said.
Three surveys since 2005 by WWF and Conservation International in Que Phuoc Commune in Quang Nam province recorded at least 116 animals, with an estimated population of over 180 individuals. To date, only a small part of the area has been surveyed, meaning significantly more doucs may live in the adjacent forest, WWF and Conservation International said.
Apart from the population recently found in Quang Nam province, there are 19 grey shanked doucs kept at the endangered primate rescue centre for protection and studies. 4 of them were born in captivity.
The first grey shanked douc, which had not been identified by any source at the time, was brought to the centre in 1995 as forest rangers seized from illegal wild animal traders.
The gray-shanked douc, or Pygathrix cinerea, was first described in 1997. They are colobine monkeys with faces that look as if they have been painted orange and cream, with black hands and tufts of gray on their heads. They spend much of their time in treetops, subsisting on fruits and leaves.
To put it into a human perspective, this discovery is like finding a new country with over 1 billion people in it, said Ben Rawson, a regional wildlife biologist for Conservation International's Indo-Burma program. We now have a much greater opportunity to overcome the very serious threats faced by this species and prevent its disappearance from our planet.
Like many primate species in Vietnam, their populations have been devastated by hunting and to a lesser degree by habitat loss. A 2006 assessment by the World Conservation Union determined that 65 percent of Vietnam's primate species and subspecies are endangered or critically endangered, making the country one of the highest global priorities for primate conservation.

The noise these monkeys make at the peak of their call doesn't sound like something a mammal could make. It is incredible and much louder in person.

What do Keepers at EPRC love about working here?
Animal Keeper is not a regular job in Vietnam. There are still so many misjudgments about this honorable job here, and still our loving keepers still go to work everyday and dedicate their heart and effort to saving the Endangered Primates of Vietnam. Today is the International Zookeepers Day, and it is meant to honor every individual who are involved in the difficult journey of caring for and conserving animals in any corner of the world.
Through this short video, we hope you saw the pure hearts of EPRC keepers and their optimistism in their job. A simple Thank You is never enough for these lovely, friendly and dedicated people. What we can do is to try our best more and more everyday to create a better working environment for them, and also help to stimulate their desire to learn more and yearn more in the field of conservation.
Follow our Facebook page at fb.com/eprc.asia to learn more about these wonderful people and observe awesome endangered primates rescued and cared for, then released at our center!

The conservation work at Turtle Conservation Centre, Cuc Phuong National Park
VTC Digital Television has made a short report on turtle conservation at the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) in Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh province in Vietnam which is managed in cooperation with the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of Indo Myanmar Conservation (IMC).
We hope that through this short report, people will better understand the conservation of turtles as well as discourage people from hunting, trading, consuming or keep them as pets.
The piece shows the centre and staff at work, please enjoy this introduction.
