Kamakura Engaku-ji Temple - Kanagawa - 円覚寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Kanagawa Kamakura Engaku-ji Temple - 円覚寺 - 4K Ultra HD : Like Hokokuji, Engakuji is not your average temple, and it is actually ranked as the second most important Zen Buddhist temple in Japan. Founded in 1282 by a Chinese Zen monk at the request of Hojo Tokimune (then ruler of Japan), Engakuji is in fact more like a closed village temple than an actual temple.
Indeed Engakuji features not only seven main buildings including the Sanmon (山門) as the main gate, but also a main hall or Butsu-den (仏殿), Shari-Den a reliquary hall (舎利殿), Butsunichia-an (仏日庵) or the burial site of Hojo Tokimune, Obai-In (黄梅院) a small temple containing a statue of Kannon, Ogane (大鐘) a 2.5m high bell as well, Mu (無) the grave of of film director Yasujirō Ozu and the private lodgings of many priests.
The “Japanese Village” atmosphere, with its many ponds, the cafe and restaurant make Engakuji one of the most interesting places to visit in Kamakura by a long shot!

Engaku-ji Temple - Kamakura ᴴᴰ ● 円覚寺 鎌倉
► It's time for a look at the beautiful Engaku-Ji, a zen buddhist temple area, located in Kita Kamakura. It was founded in 1282, and ranks as the second most important temple in Kamakura.
It has been damaged by both fires and earthquakes countless times, but repaired and rebuilt as needed along the way. It's a great place to go sightseeing, as the temple compound is quite large, with many annexes, prayer halls and green areas.
Easy access to Kita Kamakura (*North Kamakura) by JR Yokosuka or Shonan Shinjuku Line, approx. a 1 hour ride away from central Tokyo. - Enjoy!

Kamakura (Japan) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kamakura in Japan.
South of Tokyo, on the island Honshu, is the seaport of Kamakura, Japan’s ancient seat of government and is where Shogun Yoritomo, of the Minamoto Clan, left the courtly life of Kyoto in 1192 and built numerous temples and shrines. The Tokei Ji Temple was where women lived as nuns following the death of their husband. The teaching of Zen, imported from China, filled large areas of both cultural and social life. A bridge over a pond leads to the Jochi-Ji Temple that was built within a cypress forest and is one of the five famous temples of Kamakura. Founded in 1282, the Engaku-Ji Monastery teaches the priesthood right up to the present day. Its buildings are typical of Zen design, such as the abbot's residence, sub-temples and tea houses. Within the main hall, Hokan Shaka Nyorai is worshipped. In Japan, the historic Buddha is either seated, standing or prone. Kencho-Ji is the most important of the five Zen monasteries of Kamakura and has been conserved in its original form and function. The second oldest bell in the city, cast in 1255, is one of the temple’s treasures. The buildings are located within a narrow valley, surrounded by wooded slopes where the silence of Zen is palpable. The decline of the region’s rulers was accompanied by violent struggles during which the city was largely destroyed and subsequently returned to being a fishing village.
