2018 Lisbon Portugal Prazeres Cemetery(1)
Guided visit to the British Cemetery, in Porto, Portugal
Hey Ghouls and Boos!
Another day, another cemetery.
And this one, I must say, didn't knew it even existed. How crazy is that? It is so well hidden...
Once more, this visit was organized by my city, as part of its cultural programme.
I hope you like it.
xoxo

The British Cemetery at Elvas, Portugal is one of the oldest British Military Cemeteries in existence. It holds only five known graves but two of these are the only marked graves of the thousands of British soldiers who fell at the Battle of Albuera and another is the sole marked grave of the thousands who fell in the three sieges of Badajoz. The British Cemetery is situated in the bastion of S.João da Corujeiro, high on the eastern wall of Fort Elvas and just below the castle, commanding a fine view over the plain to Badajoz in Spain.

Lisbon, Portugal. Exploring Tapada das Neccessidades.
Lisbon, Portugal. Exploring Tapada das Neccessidades.
We head out on foot from our AirBnB in Bairro Alton, Lisbon, Portugal and walk towards a green area on the map, which turned out to be the park and garden - Tapada das Neccessidades.
The cemetery we peeped at from over the wall was Dos Prazeres Cemetary.
The mysterious building with the fancy chandeliers and century box was Palácio das Necessidades.
The place just outside the park where the big fountain and view of the bridge was Largo das Necessidades.
I've managed to get three vlogs out of our last day in Lisbon! This is the second of three.
In the next one we have a cake and a drink in a cafe and head down for a last stroll along the scenic banks of the river Tagus / Rio Tejo.
Thanks so much for watching!

I'm Imo and she's Izzy. We love getting out and about and exploring South Wales and beyond.
We're a home-schooling/home-educating family of two based in the UK dealing with the daily challenges of managing Izzy's severe, chronic eczema and her education. Our resourcefulness is tested on a daily basis but we'd love to share our little triumphs and discoveries with you as we go along.
I will always write closed captions in UK English for my vlogs, not only to make them more accessible in general but also to create a useful resource for advanced learners of the English language who may enjoy regular bursts of pseudo-immersion in English in a narrative context with the additional benefit of corresponding on-screen text.
These videos will not generally feature background music, making them extra suitable for people who aren't keen on pop music! x

Graveyard visits: Are they there?
Graveyard visits... are spirits there when we visit them? Brad wrote in asking several questions surrounding the fact that his mother is buried provinces away, while he's in Ontario, feeling guilty for not visiting her grave site. So, should he go? Or, is he going there for nothing! Here's what I had to tell him.

Lisbon cemetery targeted by vandals
A cemetery in Lisbon has been vandalized. Police say a marble altar and a half dozen headstones were toppled over. Black and green spraypaint was used to write profanity and to draw rude pictures.

The most tourist cemeteries in Europe
List about the most tourist cemeteries in Europe
Some of the most tourist cemeteries in Europe. Necrotourism or cemetery tourism becomes fashionable.
In this list about the most tourist cemeteries in Europe you can find:
17. Saint Paul de Vence (France)
16. Mirogoj (Croatia)
15. Kalavryta (Greece)
14. Cemitério dos Prazeres (Portugal)
Protestant Cemetery (Italy)
Zentralfriedhof (Austria)
Monumental cemetery of Staglieno (Italy)
Cemetery of Poblenou (Spain)
American Cemetery of Normandy (France)
Highgate Cemetery (England)
Greyfriars Cemetery (Scotland)
Montparnasse Cemetery (France)
Cemetery of Montjuic (Spain)
Jewish Cemetery of Prague (Czech Republic)
Cemetery of the Père-Lachaise (France)
Cemetery of Comillas (Spain)
Cemetery of Luarca (Spain)
17. Saint Paul de Vence (France)
Because of its appearance it could be a perfect example of a small village cemetery, with its white and whitewashed tombstones, and its walks full of treacherous gravel. Yes, that is at the end of the cypress road, where fresh flowers are always missing and always smells clean. However, the light of the Côte d'Azur is hanging from every corner and the views of the fortified village of Saint Paul de Vence are memorable. Located on the rocky plateau of Puy from here we can almost touch the Mediterranean horizon. So much that it was the place chosen by the king of color, Marc Chagall, to spend eternity.
16. Mirogoj (Croatia)
Arches, vaults and pavilions coexist in perfect harmony with a vegetation halfway to the wild, where there is abundant climbing ivy and ancient lichens. A garden created for the dead, which on many occasions the living also enjoy, thanks to the romantic beauty of its sculptures, converted into a spectacular outdoor Art Gallery. Built at the end of the 19th century by the Austrian architect Hermann Bollé on the slopes of the mountain of Medvednica, its monumental architecture responds to the tastes of the most influential families of the time and today - still active - it turns it into one of the graveyards most beautiful in Europe.
15. Kalavryta (Greece)
Probably one of the saddest cemeteries in the world, especially for what it symbolizes. At first glance, its sharp cypresses protect the dry mountainous landscape of the Peloponnese peninsula like a green dome, but inside, protected by a huge white cross, hundreds of modest tombstones repeat like a mantra the same date: December 13, 1943, the day in which the Nazis charged the small and picturesque village of Kalavryta, massacring all men and boys over 12 years of age.
14. Cemitério dos Prazeres (Portugal)
It is a cemetery located in the western part of Lisbon, in the parish of Prazeres, near the district of Campo de Ourique, and is the largest cemetery in the Portuguese capital. When the city of Lisbon was invaded by an outbreak of cholera, in 1833, the creation of a large cemetery was urgent; for this purpose the Cemitério dos Prazeres was created. The name of 'the Pleasures' derives from the name of the old villa that occupied the place where the cemetery is currently located. Among the illustrious personalities that are buried in the 'Rincón de los Artistas' of Cemitério dos Prazeres, there are mainly actors, singers, writers, painters and television presenters. The fadist Amália Rodrigues, initially buried here, was later transferred to the Panteão Nacional, also in Lisbon, after enormous pressure from her fans, and after the modification of the law that required a minimum of four years before the transfer.
