Vernazza and Manarola, Cinque Terre, Italy
Vernazza, Italy, may be the most beautiful of all Cinque Terre villages, set perfectly in a tiny valley on the edge of the sea, with colorful homes built one on top of the next and framed by a couple of churches and towers.
The buildings have been standing for many centuries and they’re not going anywhere, so take your time, explore the little side alleys, and yes, there are going to be staircases. After all, these are hill-towns, so there are hardly any flat, level surfaces here, but it’s easy enough.
You will be snapping away with your digital machine no doubt, capturing nice memories to remind you years hence about what a joy this was, but no picture can equal the visceral thrill of being in such a stimulating place, so don’t let that camera get in the way or divert you from fully experiencing the moment. Spend a few minutes just looking, and nothing else.
It's fun just to hang out in the village for a while and do little people watching and observe the different buildings and the folks hanging out.
This walk up the hillside is really quite easy. Don't be alarmed by the stairs and elevation. You can see a lot of it is quite level and right away you get a rewarding view, this happens it within your first 10 minutes of walking up they'll you could go up higher.
Manarola spills down the hill to the waterfront, its houses packed solidly together in the typical pattern of the region, with terraced hillsides for the grapes up above.
They don’t have a beach but there is a boat ramp carved into the stone, the most popular spot around for it functions like a beach, packed with sunbathers. The ramp leads to a cove with good swimming, further protected by a stone jetty, and ladders to help people get in and out of the water.
There’s no room to put the boats in the water so they are stored up on dry land, on a ramp and along the main street as well.
There are quite a few local residents who like to hang out, sit on the bench, chat with their friends and do some people-watching. Tourists love to look at the locals, and locals equally enjoy looking back at the tourists.

ANGELO'S BOAT TOURS - CINQUE TERRE, ITALY
Angelo's Boat Tours offers guided tours of the enchanting Cinque Terre, with an English speaking host/guide. Our groups are small (usually 10-12 guests) to ensure you have a more intimate experience. Enjoy snacks and prosecco on board while admiring the beautiful coastline of the Cinque Terre.
The Cinque Terre is a string of centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline. In each of the 5 villages, colorful houses and ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces, fishing boats bob in harbors and trattorias turn out seafood specialties. The five towns - Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore - and their surrounding coastline and hillsides form one of the world's most exquisite UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The five small coastal fishing villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, with their colorful houses, steep terraces lined with vineyards, and boat filled harbors are best seen from the water. You haven’t experienced the true essence of the Cinque Terre until you’ve seen the five villages from the sea. The perspective is entirely unique!
The goal with our tours is for you to feel as though you have spent time among friends in Italy, completely at home and off the well-beaten tourist path.
Join us for a Lunch or a Tapas Tour for a truly authentic experience of the Cinque Terre!

Cinque Terre Wine Tour In Manarola Italy
We went on a Cinque Terre wine tour in Manarola Italy and got to visit the winery and vinyard of a local Cinque Terre wine maker. We hiked through the vineyard and then back down to the wine cellar to taste both white wine and sciacchetra.

Cinque Terre - timelapse from Italy (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore)
Cinque Terre which means Five lands is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera between Genoa and La Spezia. The area is part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cinque Terre is a very popular tourist destination and comprises of five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. These unique villages hide between green, steep hills and the turquoise Ligurian sea. The villages pastel-coloured houses are built on top of rocks in the rugged, steep landscape. Cinque Terre is located in the coastal region Liguria which is popular with tourists for its beaches, towns and cuisine. Travel between the five villages can be done either by train, by boat or by hiking the beautiful trails that connect the villages.
Monterosso is the first village we meet on our journey through Cinque Terre. This is in my opinion the least exciting of the five villages. Monterosso has several hotels and a long beach with deck-chairs and umbrellas. The center of Monterosso has a nice atmosphere with pastel-coloured houses, artisan shops and many small streets.
Vernazza is simply breathtaking and very popular among tourists. Vernazza was original the only village with a natural harbour so ships departed from here and as a result, Vernazza became the most prosperous village. The first records about Vernazza goes all the way back to 1080. On 25 October 2011, Vernazza was struck by massive flooding, and mudslides that left the town buried in over 4 metres of mud, causing over 100 million euro worth of damage. Today the main source of revenue for Vernazza is tourism. However, as a testimony to the strength of centuries-old tradition, fishing, wine and olive oil production still continue.
Corniglia is the smallest and least crowded of the Cinque Terre villages. The population of the village is about 150. It is located 100 meters above sea level and thus not so easily accessesble from it's train station as the other villages and it doesn't have a harbour, so boats don't stop here. The walk from the train station to the village include climbing the Lardarina stairway with 382 steps. But there is also an easy option: the local electronic buses. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and is surrounded on three sides by terraces and vineyards, the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. The history of the village goes back to Roman times. According to the legend, Corniglia was founded by a wine producer, who named the village after his mother, Cornelia.
Manarola – along with Vernazza – is registered among the most beautiful small villages of Italy. Most of the houses are pastel-coloured and many are built on top of the rugged coast. Colours and lights are best here in the evening hours, before sunset. Manarola's primary industries have traditionally been fishing and wine-making. The village is famous for it's sweet Sciacchetrà wine.
Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the Cinque Terre and is known for it's historic character and its wine. The village was built in the valley of the Rivus Maior (river), hence the name. The river is now running under the main street. The main street and the railway station are connected by a long pedestrian tunnel with beautiful mosaics. Riomaggiore is like a labyrinth of alleys and steps. The houses are built close to one another, so not much sun enters the back alleys and they are thus nice and cool during the hot summer months. Riomaggiore is divided into two by the railway line. The area by the sea with the colourful little boats (gozzi), small seafood restaurants, rocky beach and where tourists enjoy the mediterranean sun. The upper part is the agricultural village (borgo dei contadini) surrounded by terraces.

CINQUE TERRE TRAVEL GUIDE 2019: Monterosso, Manarola, Riomaggiore, Vernazza, Corniglia
The best CINQUE TERRE Travel Guide for 2019: Visit Monterosso, Manarola, Riomaggiore, Vernazza & Corniglia. We did all five villages in 48 hours and each village offers a different experience. Please share your experience and tips below for other to read. Our top tips for your visit:
1. VALIDATE YOUR TRAIN TICKET: If you don't validate your ticket in the green machines then you risk being fined €50 (which we did - gutted).
2. CARRY CASH: Many places are cash only, so don't forget to carry some with you.
3. PREPARE FOR STAIRS: We were surprised by the amount of stairs and uphill climbs there were. For those with mobility issues I would recommend Monterosso and Vernazza.
4. HIKING MUST KNOWS: Planning to hike? There are lots of hikes in the Cinque Terre national park, you will have to pay to walk some of the routes (but if you bought a day train ticket then it's included). The terrain does require hiking boots and be sure to take plenty of water and sunscreen. Also the coastal walk through all five towns is no longer fully accessible. Due to a landslide you can only do a few of the routes, we did Corniglia to Vernazza and then to Monterosso.
5. NO DRONE ZONE: Drones are now banned in Cinque Terre and the villagers will approach you if you attempt to fly one.

Manarola, and Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, Italy
Manarola, in Cinque Terre, Italy, spills down the hill to the waterfront, its houses packed solidly together in the typical pattern of the region, with terraced hillsides for the grapes up above. They don’t have a beach but there is a boat ramp carved into the stone, the most popular spot around for it functions like a beach, packed with sunbathers. The ramp leads to a cove with good swimming, further protected by a stone jetty. It’s comfortable here -- not a sandy beach or Olympic-size pool but it is sheltered water and makes a great spot to gather, producing a mix of locals and some tourists; passers-by and people who are just spending an hour or so in Manarola and then moving along.
There’s no room to put the boats in the water so they are stored up on dry land, on a ramp and along the main street as well. The villagers have covered the stream over, so you don’t see it in the middle of town, thereby creating an uninterrupted pedestrian zone. There are quite a few local residents who like to hang out, sit on the bench, chat with their friends and do some people-watching. And the numerous cats also have that same laid-back attitude. In the afternoons most of the shops close by 1:00pm for siesta and then re-open at 3:00 or 4:00pm. Some of the tourist shops selling postcards will stay open, but the other stores in the little side streets are going to be closed. So it is a good time to have lunch. You could pick up picnic supplies or sit in one of thle many terrace restaurants here. It’s a small place but there is a nice selection of pizzerias and take-out food or of course, the ever-present pasta.
Enchanting, charming Riomaggiore is the grand climax to our survey of Cinque Terre. Here too you see that familiar pattern -- the houses tumbling down the cliffs to the water’s edge and a main pedestrian street rising up from the tiny cove, surrounded by terraced homes covering the hillside. It’s a surprising mix of urban high density in the midst of a tranquil, rural setting. It is very quiet when you walk down the little side streets, especially in the off-season, like early October when we are here.
This is a combined, expanded version of two earlier movies.

VERNAZZA IN CINQUE TERRE, ITALY-Beautiful!
Vernazza is one of the five towns of Cinque Terre (Five Lands) in the Italian Riviera and is perhaps the most photographed due to its natural harbor. In this video, you can see me struggle to pull my heavy luggage up 105 steep stairs to get to my hotel (0:20); can see the beautiful town square (2:55) and views from up high (3:49); see how excited I am to eat some great gnocchi and gelato ((7:33); take a fantastic boat ride to get up close to three of the other four towns (7:49); but perhaps the highlight of the video is seeing me do my laundry! (12:57). After that, we go inside the main church (13:40); I summarize our trip (14:35) and then show you the best way to purchase your train tickets if you're going to another destination by train (15:45). Cinque Terre Tour (Italy) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Cinque Terre Tour in Italy.
Extending south to Tuscany, Italy’s mountainous western coast on the Gulf of Genoa is Liguria, a picture book area with paradisiacal cliffs, remote villages, bucket loads of sunshine and a region known as, Cinque Terre, that comprises five villages. Monterosso Al Mare is the first and largest of the five villages that comprise Cinque Terre, on the route south. It extends across two bays and two districts, separated by a rock. The modern district of Fegina has a long waterfront promenade, a well-kept sandy beach and a good range of accommodation. Vernazza is considered to be the most beautiful of the five villages mainly because of its location within a splendid bay. Corniglia has no direct access to the sea, but extends along a massive rocky plateau about a hundred metres above the sea. On the hilly outskirts is the San Pietro Church, built in 1334, with an elegant, decorated facade and a rose window of Carrara marble. The beauty of Manarola is not obvious at first glance. From the station, a narrow street leads down towards the village. Fishermen continue to earn their living here, and there are holiday apartments as well as several souvenir shops that satisfy the demands of the many tourists who visit. In Riomaggiore, a mighty ledge separates the station from the village and watchtowers still bear witness to its chequered past. According to legend, it was founded in the eigth century by Greeks who escaped to Italy from persecution by Byzantine Emperor, Leo The Third. Travelling by train from village to village is a relaxing way in which to enjoy the sights and provides exceptional views from the cliffs to the sea and villages. In just a few minutes it is possible to visit these colourful coastal villages that were formerly difficult to access from the outside world.

Cinque Terre: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore
This video is a recap of my trip to Cinque Terre in May 2013. All of the pictures and videos were taken with a Nikon 3100. I hope you enjoy the peaceful cities as much as I did! Add Cinque Terre to your bucket list for sure, because you do not want to miss out on this treasure.
