Exploring The City Of Catania Italy
Catania is an ancient port city on Sicily's east coast. It sits at the foot of Mt. Etna, an active volcano. The city's wide central square, Piazza del Duomo, features the whimsical Fontana dell'Elefante statue and richly decorated Catania Cathedral. In the southwest corner of the square, La Pescheria weekday fish market is a rowdy spectacle surrounded by seafood restaurants.

Firefighters in Sicily's Catania province have been dealing with a number of wildfires in the Etna area on Sunday.
Drone footage shows burnt cars in a parking lot in the town of Noto. Dozens of vehicles were destroyed by flames as access was cut for owners who came to a sea resort nearby.
Authorities have reportedly established an operational room to monitor the situation across the region, with dozens of firefighters deployed to various districts.

Catania, Toarmina, Marzememi, Siracuse Sicily Vlog 2017
CATANIA, SICILY
DATES TRAVELED: 15TH FEB 2017 - 18TH FEB 2017
WEATHER: VERY SUNNY- 17-18°C IN TEMPERATURE
Our tour started from Catania. We rented a car from the airport and drove to a few places. We didn't have a long stay here so wanted to make the most of it.
DAY 1..Arrived at our hotel Miro B&B. Spent the evening in the Catania area.
DAY 2.. Drove to Mount Etna 30-40 min by car from Catania. Got to try some specialties from around this area pistachio nuts and honey. The honey known as 'Gold Etna' is amazing and comes in a variety of flavours such as lemon, strawberry and hazelnut. We then got a cable cart this cost us 30 euros each and just went half way. After this we drove to Toarmina which was about 1-2 hrs. drive from Mount Etna. Places we visited here were Castle Mola and Theatre Greco.
DAY 3..On the third day we drove to a fishing village called Marzamemi which is the southern most point of Sicily. It was originally called Mars? al-hammam by the Arabs in the 10th century. After a short visit here we drove to Siracuse. In this town we visited Castle Maniace, Cathedral in Duomo di Siracuse and Tempo di Apollo. Whist here we got try the local delicacies Pasta Alla Norma which is the most iconic dish. You will find that most of the foods have an influence of Greek, Spanish, French and Arab origin.
DAY 4..Our last and final day in Catania. In the morning we headed straight to Orta Botanica, a garden growing a wide variety of cactuses'. The place itself was ok, we only went there for something to do. we then went to the main plaza Piazza Duomo which also has a shopping district next to it. So we managed to garb some last minutes souvenirs before making our way to the airport.

Catania
From Wikipedia
Catania (Greek: Κατάνη Katánē; Latin: Catăna and Catĭna;Arabic: Balad-al-Fil or Medinat-al-Fil, Wadi Musa and Qataniyah) is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea, between Messina and Syracuse. It is the capital of the eponymous province, and with 298,957 inhabitants(752,895 in the Metropolitan Area) it is the second-largest city on the island.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Catania, like the rest of Sicily, became subject of various dominations by a series of Empires, dynasties and populations:
The Byzantine domination from VI c. to IX c.
The Arabic domination from IX c. to XI c.
The Norman domination from XI c. to XII c.
The Swabian domination from XII c. to XIII. c.
The Angevin domination during the XIII c.
The Aragonese domination from XIII c. to XV c.
The Spanish domination from XV. c. to XVIII. c
The Sabaudian domination during the XVIII c.
The Austrian domination during the XVIII c.
The Borbonic domination from XVIII c. up to the Unification of Italy (1861)
In 1693 the city was completely destroyed by earthquakes and by lava flows which ran over and around it into the sea. The city was then rebuilt in the precious baroque architecture that nowadays enjoys.
In 1860 General Garibaldi freed Sicily putting an end to fourteen centuries of foreign domination, and since 1861 Catania is a free city of Italy, whose history it shares since then.In the last years, Catania economy and social development somewhat faltered and in these years the city is facing economic and social stagnation.

Holy Thursday Procession -- St. Agatha Cathedral, Catania, Italy
During our visit to Sicily, we happened upon a Holy Thursday Procession at St. Agatha Cathedral in Catania, Italy. Citizens of Catania and Palermo claim her as their patron saint. Legend says she was born in one of the two cities but it is unclear which one.
St. Agatha was an early Christian saint and virgin martyr who was tortured, mutilated, and imprisoned because of her beliefs and also because she spurned a Roman senator who made unwanted advances toward her.
She is the patron saint of breast cancer patients, bell-founders, and bakers, as well as Malta, where her intercessions are said to have prevented the island nation from being invaded by Turks. Her intercessions were credited with quelling Mount Etna, thus saving the city of Palermo.
She is honored with an annual three-day festival in Catania every Feb. 3-5. Maybe you'd like to plan to go. Let us know.
Just so you know, the clanging of the bells was pretty loud so we dropped the volume a little for this video. We suppose the clergy and townspeople must get used to it.
