A Walk around Ennerdale Water
When the clouds are down, and you are not likely to see much on the higher fells. Think about taking a walk around my favorite valley, early mornings, it can be very secluded. Average time about 4 hours with a stop for coffee sandwiches. Nothing better.
The Voice of Ennerdale Valley
Lying on the North Western edge of the Lake District in Cumbria, Ennerdale valley is a jewel in England's landscapes. Quiet, remote, and to some, a vision of wilderness. It is home to some of England’s most vibrant natural environments and one of the longest running ecological restoration projects in the UK.
The Wild Ennerdale Partnership is allowing the landscape to evolve naturally by reducing human intervention, sheep grazing and conifer plantations, whilst allowing the expansion of the old deciduous forests that once covered this region.
Commissioned by the Wild Ennerdale Partnership, we aimed to show the journey of nature through the valley as told from the perspective of water, forming in the clouds, dropping with the rain, flowing through the rivers and resting in the Lake.
The Ennerdale partnership is a collaboration between the National Trust, Forestry Commission, Natural England and United Utilities.
Controversial Ennerdale
Ennerdale is one of the most controversial regions in the UK and is often overlooked entirely by tourists, in part, due to a lack of roads and facilities anywhere nearby.
The entire valley has been designated a 'Wild Valley' which conflicts harshly with many commercial interests, but gives it a special advantage when it comes to star-gazing. Ennerdale is one of the few 'Dark Sky' locations in the UK. The use of the valley for disposal of nuclear waste is still being hotly debated, and Former President Bill Clinton proposed to Hillary here in 1973 (she turned him down on this occasion). Storms in this valley can be violent enough to alter the course of the river, which they did again very recently. See for yourself how it looks now in this clip.

EXPLORING ENNERDALE IN THE LAKE DISTRICT
Ennerdale is one of my favourite parts of the Lake District. It is a brilliant base to hike some of the Wainwrights, or simply walk along the valley floor. From the lake up to Great Gable, there is only a stony track and sparse accommodation, which makes the Ennerdale valley both remote and peaceful. In this video I hike up to the YHA Black Sail hostel, and up the fire break to the summit of Red Pike.

Ennerdale fells wild camp
Parked up at bowness knot car park (free), and walked up great borne, the scenic way, to the right, past the waterfall, then from there to starling dodd, little dodd, red pike, high stile, high crag, and down the worst descent I have yet encountered, knees take a right battering here, once at the bottom we discussed whether to stick to the original plan and go up haystacks...or not, man beast that is my son won out, so we turned right, and started looking for some ground to setup camp, and what an absolutely cracking place we found, if you have been that way, you will know it, it's a stunner of a place, running water, flat ground for 2 tents, and a firepit all ready established, with dry wood there, we replenished it before we left for the next lucky camper ☺, amazing sunset !!, and in the morning, headed down towards black sails, and hung a right along the valley bottom, crossing over the bridge and following the track back, on the left hand side of the river, well worth the detour !! Lots of dear tracks in there, but didn't see any.
oh yeah, we done this one on the 2th April and the temperature was about 20-26 C throughout the day, and yes, I got burnt to hell and back.
All in all, I think it was about 14 miles all in HIGHLY recommend this one !!
