Enniscorthy Castle
The first stone castle on site was constructed in the 1190’s by the Norman Knight Philip De Prendergast and his wife Maud. Philip, Maud and their descendants owned Enniscorthy Castle until the Gaelic revival in the late 1300’s. In the 1370’s Gaelic chief Art MacMurrough Kavanagh retook the Castle by force. The Castle remained in his family’s ownership until they surrendered it to Lord Leonard Grey in the 1530’s. For the next 50 years Enniscorthy Castle remained in a ruined condition until the arrival of Sir Henry Wallop. Henry Wallop rebuilt the Castle upon its existing foundations. The Castle was later occupied by Cromwellian forces in 1649 and used as a prison during the 1798 Rebellion. It became the private residence of the Roche family, from 1903-1951. The Castle served as Wexford County Museum from 1962-2006. Enniscorthy Castle closed for refurbishment works in 2006 and reopened in 2011.
Today, Enniscorthy Castle explores the development of the Castle and the town of Enniscorthy from its earliest Anglo-Norman origins. The Castle also houses exhibitions dedicated to its last residence The Roche Family, the Industrial and Commercial Heritage of Enniscorthy, Colm Toibin’s; Brooklyn and the pioneering modernist designer Eileen Gray.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley is an Irish ballad written by Robert Dwyer Joyce (1836-1883), a Limerick-born poet and professor of English literature. The song is written from the perspective of a doomed young Wexford rebel who is about to sacrifice his relationship with his loved one and plunge into the cauldron of violence associated with the 1798 rebellion in Ireland.
I sat within the valley green, I sat me with my true love
My sad heart strove the two between, the old love and the new love

Off to the Wexford Literary Festival at Enniscorthy Castle!
I'll be speaking about the #Normans, #Vikings, Flemings and Gaels (assuming I don't get sidetracked) alongside the acclaimed poet and local historian Fintan Murphy at the #Wexford Literary Festival in #Enniscorthy Castle at 11am on Saturday, July 6th.
